it that Sam Smith is handing up his stripes due to the pathetic behavior of some of the fans. I believe that this will be a huge loss for the 15th Region since he is the only one who seems to even half way know what he's doing out there.
Sam, if you read this...please don't quit. You are the one most highly respected by the players and the coaches. The players that I've talked to say that when you are on the floor they feel that they are going to have at least one ref who will TRY to call the right calls. These boys need you.

You've got to be kidding! Highly respected by the coaches, I might be able to name one that likes him. Almost every team has scratched him. The kids will miss him, maybe the Pike County kids will. He sticks it everyone else.

B A L O N Y !!!
I know, it's actually bologna. But I wanted the phonetic to take precedence.
Sam Smith is one of the best officials in the STATE, not to mention the 15th Region.
Say it aint so, Sam!

I beg to differ with you on that one. He has reffed several games that I have seen where a Pike County team was playing Floyd County teams, Johnson County, Lawrence County....he was fair and unbiased in his calls. He didn't call more calls against the teams who were playing Pike County teams. Just like other refs he is human and he is going to miss calls just like the others...but the one's he sees and calls you can rarely -- if you are honest -- disagree with. I'll argue a call.....sometimes even when I see that the ref is right....simply because it's against my team but I have to say that there has only been one game where I saw calls that Sam made that I disagreed with more than once or twice in the game. Like it or not Sam is the best the 15th has....and I for one don't want him to quit.
Which school do you root for, bubba?

I don't think he is one of the elite refs in the 15th, but I do not feel like he has ever cheated or been biased in any way. Now saying he is one of the best refs in the state is BALONY (bologna). How many state tournaments has he called? How many times has he been ranked in the top 5 refs in the region by the coaches? He is an average ref and does not deserve to be bashed, but he is not a great ref and does not deserve praise that calls him "one of the best officials in the STATE".

Obviously not. At the ER/Johnson Central game Friday night, Tyler Hamilton got tackled right in front of him and no call. So it's obvious that he still needs that surgery. Maybe we need to take a collection to get it for him....we all know that refs don't get paid that much.

I agree with that statement.
Sam is right up there with Jim Blackinship as the top official.

You are entitled to your opinion. Some of us like refs who don't play favorites. Sorry that he won't play favs to your team.

By no means is Sam Smith one of the top officials in the 15th. He is middle of the pack at best, and that is being generous.

Maybe he is starting to listen to the advice i give him everytime i see him officiate a ball game.....man i hope so.

Thank Goodness, I Have Watched Many Of His Games And He Is Lost Out There. He And Wendell Combined Are A Dangerous Pair, Wendell With His Spiteful Calls And Sam Just Struggles With Basketball Rules In General.

:Sad04:It is clear that Sammy is a Pike County fan! I'm sure he will be greatly missed by us all!

You must be as blind as Wendell. Sam does not "struggle with basketball rules". A foul is a foul is a foul....unless of course you are Wendell in which case a walk can be a foul and a foul isn't a foul if Landon Slone is the one fouling.
But oh well to each his own....

Sam is a pretty good ref at times.I have seen him miss his share of calls, but then again I've seen Wendell,Jim,Roger, and John miss there fair share also. I don't think if he is really hanging up his whistle it is due to the fans. I think it would be because of the coaches!!! The coaches may be complaining about calls made or missed by him.Every Region in my opinion has those refs that are notorious for their lack of calling fouls and then turning around when a coach is screaming in their ear and giving that coaches team a make up call!!! I would like for all those people that have ever tried to ref a game whether it be a pee-wee,grade school, high school,or even a league game where you live to tell me about the pressure you are under not only by the coaches, but by the players parents and fans that scream and carry on if they see you screw up.I'm not saying Sam or anyone I mentioned above is a graet ref and should not be called out when they mess up.I'm saying it happens and we as coaches, fans, players, and parents need not be so quick to demand that they quit!!!If they did not do what they do who would? I would not want their job because it's not worth the pay they receive and it's not worth the hassle from everyone.I'm also pretty sure if we could ask each and every ref why they did call games they would tell you it is for the love and passion they have for the game of basketball!!! They are not out to get a certain team or to make sure that their favorite team wins. They are there to officiate a game to the best of their ability.
