I believe success lies with strong, sound, aggressive and inspired team defense.
You survive big games by prventing opponents from winning. Make Defense the rock you build your team on! I also believe on really concentrating on special teams and the importance of the kicking game. Special teams determine who wins the close games, Invariably. On offense Kyhillbilly5321 said it best, Style must fit talent, Talent must fit style.I do believe coaches can get caught up in the fever of scoring points and neglect other phases of the game.
** The most important of all, Keep your system at a point that allows your players to play-instead of making them think too much. Find the area between too little and too much that matches your teams ability.(IMO)

Providing that you have your kids in the right system that suits their talent--
1. There is NO substitute for preparation. A lot of the teams that win the big one every year no only have great talent--but their coaching staff outworks everyone. More film breakdowns, more keys, tendencies, etc.
2. Proper game planning (which works hand and hand with the above statements).
It doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

Very true! Kyhillbilly 5321 knows his football.
Film Breakdown is what I spent doing after we got the film on monday, I was up to around 1or 2 every morning doing. I tried to figure out every aspect even down to what they did on special teams. I wanted to know what they did on 3rd and 5 from the right hash or what they did on 2and 10 from the middle of the field and ect.
I never could get the other coaches to meet so I had to break it down myself.
Every where else I coached, We spent probably a whole day on Sunday for film breakdown and game preperation. We ate lunch and supper that day while we were there, It was an all day job.
