Why Belfry has WV players
#1
Coach Haywood is in the news because he is going for win 400 this week. Yogi, head coach at Mingo Central, is in the news for this!

Great read on the WV site. Crazy the things he has done there and still the head coach. Wonder what MCMiner will say about it?

Yogi being Yogi

Can't expect a tiger to change his stripes. Still remains a slime ball and a slug who thinks o lay about himself and not his kids.

I went back and read the thread. The head coach of Mingo is accused of intentionally throwing his game Friday night to get better placement in the playoffs. He is a loser among losers if this is true.

My understanding is that the head coach, Yogi Kinder, purposely threw Friday nights game once they realized they were a lock to the playoffs but slated to play Bridgeport, by throwing the game they got a more favorable opponent in the playoffs. From what I heard several of Mingo Centrals starters were in attendance at the Belfry game Friday and not at their game, hearing they quit.

Basically, it boils down to this. With a win, Mingo Central would've traveled to Bridgeport (the overwhelming undefeated favorite and defending champion) for state-semis. In order to avoid this, several (most of, from what I was told) the starters didn't play and a sub-par Westside team took them to the woodshed. Several Miner fans are supportive of this, surprisingly. Some are taking the "kids were legit banged up" approach, some are furious. I could believe the kids are banged up story had he not joked in the Charleston paper that a player would be back "unless they needed in a different bracket" - and an assistant coach quit during the week because he thought what Kinder was doing was dirty.

Because WV uses a point system based on who you've played and beat, Westside gets this "win" and vaults into the playoffs whereas with a loss they wouldn't have made it... so naturally someone misses who should've made it. That someone, I believe, is North Marion HS. I hate that for the North Marion seniors.

You play to win the game. You coach to teach kids about life. To be the man... well you guys know the rest.

Amen!

Gutless, and based on what I've heard of Kinder all these years, not at all surprising. So basically, he's playing to be #2 since Bridgeport is the overwhelming favorite?

Im curious as to why throwing a game is so bad if it helps your chances in the playoffs?
This isn't professional sports and as such, theres no betting, therefore it isn't illegal to throw a high school game.

Also, a lot can happen in the first or second round. To those that say they'll have to play Bridgeport anyways, my thinking is, what if bridgeports QB goes down to injury or something like that and Mingo beats them later on?

I just don't see why this is looked down upon. I look at it as strategy. Good move by the coach IMO. Thinking ahead.
I don't see how this any different than a team resting players in the last regular season game for the playoffs once they are locks.

Imagine if you had a son playing at North Marion! I'd be hotter than a two dollar pistol!!
#11
Sounds like there's a flaw in West Virginia's playoff seeding system that needs to be resolved.
#12
Middlesboro use to have a lot of players from across the state line in Tennessee back in their prime time years.

I bet the call has already been made to get these players at Belfry next year. How many players does Belfry have on their team that live in West Virginia?

How'd that middle school game go between Ashland and Belfry a few weeks ago? Oh wait...

Because, even in games where they rest players, 99 times out of 100, most coaches would still play them a few series or a quarter, etc. in my opinion, what Kinder (allegedly) did was not even close to strategy, it's a slap in the face to the game, and to whichever team did not get in. We go on and on about how teams should have to earn their way into the playoffs here on this site, and so forth, and here we have a team who was given (basically) a playoff spot by Kinder's actions that didn't earn their way in. That's the difference. It's not strategy in any way, shape, or form. It is cheating, it is unsportsmanlike, and it is a poor example to set for young men on his team. He should be without a job pronto.

Tradition!!

Crazy how this happens and finally people open their eyes. This man has been losing players like this for years due to his lack of respect for others. From what I have heard there are tons of athletes from MC that don't participate in the sport just because of him. It's asinine he has been employed for this long.
#18
They have West Virginia players because they pay for them.Duh!
#19
Strategy is using the spread to beat a team who packs the box. This is a violation of the integrity of the game. You never sit your best players in an effort to lose. You sit them after your team has the lead. No class. No honor. No dignity. Pathetic.

And that's the reason why the game wasn't played. You're playing with kids that should be in high school and with kids that don't even live in your district. They should rename your schoolGreater Tug Valley. If it wasn't for the total influx of West Virginia players Belfry would be comparable to Pike Central.
#21
We have as many WV players as Ashland would if they didn't suck.

An Ashland fan really said this with a straight face??????

That's gold.

I might add that Belfry submitted their roster and validated all the kids ages and grades to the KMSFA. Ashland was simply grasping for any excuse to back down from a game. Funny how he neglects to mention that part.

Ha, now that's comedy. If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black I don't know what is. Maybe you all should get some more kids from Huntington so you can get past the massive roadblock of Johnson Central Wink

The roster was validated and verified. FWIW....the kitties were older as a whole than our team. We have one kid who just turned 15 a couple of weeks ago. The kitties had 2 kids 15 yrs old.

Typical Ashland......throw stones and you live in a glass house.

Ashland needs to worry about Johnson Central than worry about what Belfry does. Lol

Let me school you on some Belfry/Ashland history. When I was a senior. A legit 17 year old senior as was the rest of the team because back then Belfry just didn't use the holdback rule. But teams elsewhere did. Like That 1990 state championship team with the Ashland Icon Juan Thomas. They was held back pal. And you guys had some West Virginia players along the years. And yes having the West Virginia players help us a great deal but we would still be contenders with out them. Why because our coach!!! He is a winner. And if your kid played for a coach like MC has. Then you would bring your kid to Belfry too.

That's one of the most ignorant post I've seen made on these boards, coming from a fan whose school pulls kids from WV and all the other surrounding schools and still can't win.you all are worse than Fairview, not because you told on them but because you went after their players with the mass exodus. Pot meet kettle. Not only is Ashland cowards, their fans are whinners. Congrats you finally won at something.

Don't have to pay for them, when you have a winning program, kids want to play there. Take Whitely County for example, they will never experience that, they have sucked for so long that parents would not even accept money to have their child play there. :truestory:
