The best players are usually the ones who go unnoticed. Without their chance to play who knows where potential has been missed. I know it is very hard to get volunteer coaches for Youth League Organizations because the pay is very bad. But coaches have to realize the impact they have on young player. They could be the person who turns a young person around or be the one who destroys their self esteem. Youth league is meant for all kids not just the coaches' kids

It should always be, without exception, about the children and their well being and development. All the children, because everyone of them deserve the same attention as another!!!!!!!! :Nodding: :USAFlag:

This thread is obviosuly one that gets people fired up to say the least. I have played for several different coaches and different coaching styles. There were seasons in which I never got off the bench unless it was a huge blowout. But by the time I was a Junior and Senior, I was not only the leading scorer but rebounder as well.
I have also had the wonderful oppurtunity to coach at various levels. I know, coming from a player standpoint, that sitting the bench at any level is hard to deal with especially when the child doesn't understand why. Yes there are some occasions in which the coach has favorites and plays people that will make him look good. Sometimes there are coaches who only play the ones who he/she can win with.
At any level, coaches should always remember why they are there- the players. Any child of any age that is willing to bust their a$$ day in and day out deserves playing time. But kids of any age who go to practice and aren't willing to work hard shouldn't be given playing time. But parents must also realize that negative comments about other team members and coaches puts a negative outlook of any sport on their child.
I have children of my own. Yes it would be extremely hard to sit there and watch my child ride the bench due to favoritism, or lack of attention from the coach, or from any other reason. we all want what is best for our children. But being told that I would never amount to anything as a player, being pushed aside because I wasn't popular enough, and just being looked over made me work my a$$ off to be where I am today. Not all kids will do this I am well aware. That is where parents, instead of being negative, should help their kids understand what is going on. Work with them, guide them, leave out the negative comments.
When it comes down to the coach just having favorites and caring only about the win column, then they need to be confronted. But remember is the school system is willing to put up with it what does that tell ya? IT GETS WORSE ALOT FARTHER DOWN THE LINE THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE!!:coach:

I agree that everybody should play, but why you are playing all your players the other coach is worried about winning the game by just playing a few. So what are we teaching our players to do? To show how bad of sports some coaches are. I have coached for many years and know matter how much you try to satisify the parents you can't. Coach the way you feel comfortable and stick to the your rules. Coaches are dedicated peolple.

halfstep Wrote:You witnessed what has been going on in that county for decades! Those guys pick out what is supposed to be the next superstar at the highschool level while they are in the 4th thru 5th grade. And all they do is work with those kids. They look at the others and say that he or she is not going to do much more after grade school. This IMO this is so wrong, when alot of kids don't start to really develope untill they hit Highschool. So alot of kids are pushed out or they transfer. Which IMO is why the cross creek rivals do as good as they do. They welcome these kids with open arms, take them in and develope them. That is why they are always very tough year in and year out in the district and region.
Maybe they need to take a page out of Paintsville's Book. They have a Jr. Pro league which is made up of a total of 14 teams. 8 teams of 5 yrs to 8 yrs and 6 teams of 9 yrs to 12 yrs. Every Kid on the team must sit out one whole quarter and every kid on the team must play at least one whole quarter without coming out. Their MOTO is "where furtue Tigers are made".
Maybe all these schools in the county and surrounding counties ought to try something like this. I know most of them all have an "A", "B" and "C" team. Maybe only put ten or eleven players on each team at time and every player has to sit and play at least one quarter. This wil develope alot more kids and also make the coaches have to use alittle strategy!:High5:
You couldn't of said it better halfstep...When I played basketball in grade school it was FUN....We worked hard...we ran as a team, we done shooting drills as a team, we done defensive slide drills as a team, we WON as a team and bygosh we LOST as a team....If the coaches are not letting the players even practice then how are they going to learn teamwork? I wasn't the next michael jordan or nothing and I didnt play basketball in middle or highschool BUT playing as a kid in grade school learned me discipline and hard work and it developed me as a young man...our coach tried to play everybody in every game...sometimes he could not get everybody in but if they didnt get in that night he started them the next night and I think this is what every grade school coach should do....Shaq didnt make his 8th grade bball team...look at him today...NUFF SAID!

I know Randy Davis is a GREAT young coach at Dorton. A young coach who knows the game and a great teacher of the game!

I agree! Randy Davis has been great for that program and the players.

The first thing that Bobby Keith did at Clay County when He was hired, was to start a Jr.Pro program. Look where it took him. How abut the epitome of all late bloomers...none other than Michael Jordan himself. He wasn't that much of an impact player early in his playing career.....late bloomer. Point is...how can you tell who is goingt to be a "GREAT" player or not at that age. So why not give every player the benefit of the doubt...play them.

I think it's amazing how wide spread this problem is and how everyone that posted on this thread really feels strongly about what they posted. I still say every kid deserves a chance to play!!! Thanks to everyone on their input.
