For Perry Central, the red came from MC Napier, the black from Dilce Combs. Gold was incorporated for the first few years but it was mostly abandoned by the early 2000's, not sure why it was part of the scheme. Commodores is homage to the namesake of Hazard & Perry County, Oliver Hazard Perry.

Not terribly in the case of Highlands. I believe they were called the Blue Devils at one point, but a local preacher objected and the name was changed to Bluebirds. That may also be where the blue comes from.:biglmao:

Indeed, the county figured the city would become insolvent at some point and have to combine. I don't think they really 'hoped' it would happen though, more of a preliminary thing. I've not seen any gold in any of our uniforms since the late 90's.

During the winter months as boats would travel up and down the Ohio River the fires from along the railroad yards could be seen with the railroad workers huddled around them to keep warm. In the glow of the fires it was said look at those Red Devils.

I learned that in 8th grade civics from Mr. Dave Collins. I think that is most of it. The city of Russell was almost named Rail City.

Either Bill Vallance or Tracy Edwards told me that story in middle school. I seem to remember one of them saying that the reason Russell is maroon instead of red is because of a mix up when the school ordered new uniforms during the early years of the football program. They received maroon jerseys instead of the red ones they ordered, but the school liked them so much they decided to keep them. Not 100% sure on that, but that's what I remember.

Early 1900s Football coach while at practice turned to one of his assistants and said this team looks like a bunch of Tomcats fighting. Name stuck. Not sure on the colors. Not many schools and none in Kentucky with that nickname.

I believe Clay County got their colors and name from Manchester High School, when consolidation took place. Not sure when, I think in the 1930's? There were several high schools in the county such as Lower Laurel, Fogertown. Maybe someone knows more about this than I do.

Someone told me once that the baby blue WAS originally used way back in the day for a few years, which is why they used it again beginning with their trim around the white in the basketball uniforms back in he 80's for a short while. But I've never seen a story connected with it so I'm not sure that was true. Maybe someone like Panther Thunder might know more than me about that. But to my knowledge, it was always been Maroon and White other than those few misguided years where some blue was used with basketball. I always hated that, FWIW.

Good point. Never liked the blue trim. Imo it took away from the true colors.

I'm sure most are familiar with the unfortunate history of Corbin. Obviously, racism was abundant all across the South, but Corbin had an incident in 1919 where black railroad workers were gathered up and sent back to Knoxville on a train. The rumor was that during the "round up", locals had bloodhounds (Redhounds) with them. That said, that could just be rumor. Maybe someone could shed some light as to whether it's true or not.

As for my Harlan County friends, does anyone remember Cumberland having light blue as a trim back in the early 80's? I seem to remember that but always remembered them being Maroon, white, with a little grey. I think they incorporated black a little before consolodation.

Thinking back, I thought I came across an image of students at Manchester High School before with "M" on the lettermens. I know that Clay County High School came about in 1927. The black and gold colors are unique, especially thinking that the majority of schools were using Red, Blue, or White. Do you know of any other high schools that helped make up Clay County High School?

I'm not 100% positive but from what I understand from my father who was in Fairview's 1st High school class back in the late 1950s students submitted mascot names then voted on which mascot would represent the school . As far as the colors go I know when my dad was in school Fairview's original colors was Blue ,& Gold . He doesn't remember how they chose the colors but he assumes the same way as the mascot . Not sure of why or what year but sometime after my dad graduated & before I started at Fairview in 1978 their colors changed from Blue / Gold to the Red , White,& Black that it is today.
