Great thread! I don't have answers for you though. Will be checking back.

I had heard that Bell Co got their blue and white during the merger with Lone Jack. Lone Jack was Blue and White. They kept LJ's colors and Bells nickname.

Johnson Central.... Black & Gold - Golden Eagles

JC was actually going to have Red, White & Blue as our colors, with a Colonel mascot. There was a restaurant/truck stop called 'The Colonel' pretty close to the property when JC was being built. The story I got was some of the school board members went to Morehead State and recommended the Eagle. Some how, the Golden Eagle came about and the Gold stayed and Black replaced the Blue in Morehead's color

JC also uses Morehead State's fight song.

North Laurel High School got their colors from Hazel Green Bullfrogs (Green and White) and Bush Blue Devils (Blue and White). The two old high schools (now elementary schools) that feed into the northern side of the county.

That is correct.

As you dig you will find that Belfry's original colors were more a darker Red, almost Maroon, Silver, and White.

When Johnson Central was consolidated, none of the schools that were closed had the colors or mascot of the new school.

Van Lear: Bank Mules/Grey & Blue
Flat Gap: Greyhounds/Red & Grey
Meade Memorial: Red Devils/Maroon & White
Oil Springs: Wildcats/Blue & White

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE JC HONOR THE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS WITH A 'Throwback' Style uniform. Maybe a different uniform for one game for four seasons.

Granny Bear Wrote:I'm not exactly sure how Harlan County decided their colors. More than likely they were trying to stay away from all the feeder school colors that already existed. I seem to remember a questionnaire about colors and mascots, but I'm not for sure. HCS could help us out on that.

Harlan County was originally The Knights. I even have a T-shirt with Harlan County Knights on it. Some people thought that the Knight mascot was too close to the Trojan mascot of James A Cawood, so there was a meeting about that. I remember an old man getting up at that meeting and addressing everyone in the room he said, "I've been in these mountains for many years, trappin' huntin' and just lookin'. I can tell you now that I've never seen nary a Knight in these mountains. I have though, seen a lot of snakes and bears. I'd like to see Harlan County's mascot changed to the Bears, or the Coal Miners, or the rattlesnakes."

Local people can tell you that the holler where the school now sits was abundant with snakes. As a matter of fact, it is called Copperhead Holler.

But anyway, there was a vote and Da Bears it was!!!

I could see that... I bet that creek still has some Copper swimming around.

Just around the curve on that old county road where the football field sits, is an overhang. We used to dig and find arrowheads there all the time. That's where I saw the biggest copperhead I've ever seen. Dang thing was so thick it looked like a puff adder.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I was asked about the color scheme along with the mascot at Williamsburg, but I really don't know the answer?? I was told at 1 time Williamsburg had colors that were yellow and black and thru time transitioned into the orange & black. At one time, the school went w/ an orange and blue (Florida Gators) scheme but that was because the band actually created that animal when they purchased band uniforms w/ blue on them, so the rest of the school had to follow suit. But since the 60's as far back as I remember, the color scheme was always orange and white trimmed in black... just in recent years has black become a dominant color... I hope to have you more of an accurate answer soon though!!! GOOD THREAD!!!

They looked too much like Ashland..... Smart move Belfry, smart move. TongueirateSho

I can see the first time a Belfry Admin./Pike County Admin. saw Ashland's colors..... they probably called an emergency meeting that same day.

I had wondered if that wasn't the way that North came up with those colors. Old Hazel Green Bullfrogs were a force my Dad said back in the day with round ball! Thanks, for the info!! :thanks:

In reality, I believe Belfry's color change came from Williamson being maroon as well? I could find out.

Love to know how they got Pirates. It just sounds right, though!

My instincts would say it was due to Williamson. Have to remember getting across the mtn to Pikeville used to be a chore and Williamson was right down the road.

Pine Knot Blue and Gold
McCreary Maroon and White

Consolidation: Colors Maroon and Gold.
AD liked Black and added it later.

I've always wondered this. Nicholas County is the Blue Jackets, I don't understand why Williamsburg does t go with the Orange Jackets. That'd be pretty cool IMO, and, umm..accurate.

Well kinda, but no, not exactly Pulp.

What happened was that in 1976, the senior class was given the opportunity of voting on a proposed color change for the school and changing it to Red/White/ Blue was the option that was tasked before the Class of 1976. For some reason, someone thought that since it was the country's Bi-Centennial year that it would be a great idea to change the school colors. It was voted on and the Class of '76 determined that it should stay Black & Gold. Never made any sense to me how one particular anniversary of historical significance would warrant a change in school colors, or why you would pick out one particular class to determine the change, but that's the long and short of how the possibility of JCHS becoming R/W/B came about..

You have to understand that celebrating the Bi-Centennial anniversary of this country was a huge deal back in 1976.. It was a time when the people of this country and our leaders in the White House loved this nation and what it stood for...it was much much different time than it is today.

The story that I was always told how Raceland became the Rams was Raceland did not have any home facilities for football and basketball, therefore they were called the Ramblers because they always were "rambling on the road" or something similar. My memory is little fuzzy about that line. When Raceland finally got home facilities, they just shortened the name to Rams. I have no idea how Raceland adopted the colors orange and black.
Greenup Co. became the Musketeers as a result of the consolidation of Wurtland HS, Greenup HS, and McKell HS. The colors of Greenup Co. represent one color for each school consolidated:
Black- Wurtland (Colors were red and black)
Yellow- McKell (Colors were blue and yellow)
Green- Greenup (Colors were green and white)

Trying to find out about Letcher central colors. Letcher high was blue, whitesburg was Orange and black and neon was purple. So the colors must have been selected not representing and closed school.I know the school was almost called pine mountain high school.

I believe Blue Jackets refers to a Shawnee Indian chief who traveled into Kentucky from Ohio during the hunting seasons. Captured Simon Kenton at one time.
