Belfry @ Cabell-Midland 10/02
www.wvtailgatecentral.com/forum a lot of big talk over there!
wvhills Wrote:Thanks EKU for being civil. I think the biggest difference is the work these kids put in the weight room. These kids don't go on summer vacations for the past two years anyways. They are in the weight room dedicated to getting better. Most of the kids have become football only athletes. Their decisions. I will give my kid as an example: used to play basketball and baseball. He also did quite well wrestling. There are quite a few kids who would be state champion wrestlers if they would go back to wrestling. They are committed and are buying into Coach's gameplan. They will be ready to play at home. They have played 4 road games in the first five. Both teams that played for the AAA state championship last year and won. (Capital and South Charleston). Most kids playing on just one side of the ball. This is the most in shape team I have seen at Midland. Second half of season we have 4 home games and 1 more road game. Should be a great game. Rumors has it that you guys will bring 3000 fans. If so that is a huge following. Good luck and hope for the best. Safe travels.

They are certainly an impressive team and very well coached team from what I have seen. Your kids have a very high football IQ and play very fundamentally sound football.

The biggest compliment I have paid to them in talking with other people is they aren't exactly a team with a bunch of speed or athletes who can pop a 60 yard TD... but what impresses me is they are constantly able to get 25-30 yard gains just by out-scheming and out-executing their opponent.

Truth be told CM and Belfry are pretty similar teams on Offense, but just have contrasting schemes. I kind of wish Belfry copied some of the stuff Midland does that allows them to pass it more.

Belfry does travel well... 3000 may be a stretch to be honest ... but at the same time it wouldn't surprise me if despite the lengthy road trip Belfry doesn't load the bleachers. If it were a playoff game I could see 3000 but my best guess is you will see maybe 1500 or so fans from Belfry. I could be underestimating though.. Belfry has traveled that well in the past.

What you will also see though is a good number of "neutral" fans that will come to this game as well. Maybe a couple extra hundred or more.I know Johnson Central plays on a Thursday for example... and let's face it... it's been a long time since two teams from these states ranked #1 in their class squared off.

Used as an intimidation factor and pump up method before their games. Belfry fans in attendance will witness Midlands Maori Haka. In the past the Pirates have neutralized opponents intimidation factors in various ways (the 79 Highlands story comes to mind). What do you think? Does the war chant with Midlands numbers intimidate the Pirates this Friday night?

So far the funniest comment I have seen:
"I think Bridgeport is better. Their kids have chemistry from playing together that Belfry just doesn't have year to year.

Coaching and schematically, they're both at a high level of execution. Talent isn't much different year to year, but I think Bridgeport has been more talented of two schools over time."

Guy is convinced Belfry has a ton of guys transfer in during the middle of their HS Career... hated to break his heart and let him know that what families do move their kids to Belfry usually is when they first start school or around 6th Grade. I guess playing for 6-7 years in the Belfry system together doesn't give them time to gel together HAHA
Don't pay any attention to the poster's on that website. I can guarantee you that there are only 3 people over there that have any idea of what goes on at Midland other than Friday nights highlights. Sounds like alot of them have there own agendas.
EKUAlum05 Wrote:They also do this

Needless to say these guys really like theatrics.

no wonder they play good football......they are high on exhaust fumes

WVHills. Glad to see you on the site this week. Out of pure interest can you tell me the history of the Ka Mate/Haka at Midland? Who introduced it, how long have you done it, etc.
IronMan86.....love the comparison!!!
Confusednicker:
I think it's all cool but nothing like tunnel time at Belfry. Kids get to show the players the love they have for them. I like the kids just playing football hard nosed. Big plays high five, that's it. The chest bump to theirselves make them look stupid. Actually tired of seeing it by a couple of Belfry players. And please don't take your helmet off and come running off the field like an idiot. It's a touchdown, it ain't like the horn blowed at the end of the state championship and you won. Play Belfry football, Belfry is about teamwork. It's a team game. No one player is bigger than the team.
wvhills Wrote:Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers Crossbones. Just looked that way to me. Good luck and safe travels.

No feathers ruffled at all. I was just trying to call it how I seen it. It's a good.
If Russell didn't have a game on Friday, I'd be tempted to make the trip over see this one in person. Should be a slobber knocker. This game will feature two of the best defensive linemen in this part of the country in Horton & Donahue. For anyone wondering, that's Donahue(#46) leading the chant in the video above.

It would be huge if Belfry could collect the scalp of West Virginia's #1 team, but my head is telling me that CM wins a close one. It sounds like Knoxville Catholic's inexperience defending Belfry's particular brand of offense was a huge advantage for the Pirates. I don't think they'll have that advantage this week. As was previously mentioned, CM Head Coach Luke Salmons has defended Belfry's offense before. I'm sure he'll have his kids well prepared, as will Haywood.

I don't think this game will be as easy as the Knoxville Catholic game was..........this one is gonna be a :HitWall: but I think in the end Belfry comes out on top 20-14
Since its now October 1st im available if there is an open position for trolling. Looks like pjboy has already took my spot. Cabell Midland wins this game fairly comfortably.

bucslover68 Wrote:Nobody in 3A over Belfry "by a lot". Not saying teams can't beat them, but Boyle and Belfry both have impressive resumes so far, but Boyle has a much tougher road to go to BG than Belfry does. IMO they are 1a and 1b in 3a with each team able to make a great case for the top spot. Central Hardin is an average 6a team at best and everyone points to that win for Boyle and Boyle had to go to the wire with them and defend a two point conversion and Belfry had their way with an average 6a team in Tates Creek although they gave up some points, so the argument that Boyle is a lot better than Belfry is not valid IMO just as it would be invalid to say Belfry is a lot better than Boyle. If Boyle makes it to state they would be a worthy opponent for anyone. Seems to me a lot of people like to hand out crowns midway through the season. Do not forget who is the champ and who has been to the finals 5 straight years and is a big favorite to return to BG. Boyle has a nice win over Danville and Belfry has nice wins over several good teams also.

Belfry may have an edge over Boyle in the 3A dance off after getting some experience against what ever this team is doing, but when it comes to football, I think Boyle runs right over everyone.
If I am wrong I will eat my words and admit it.
If im not, I will come to collect.
Looks to be a pretty good matchup between these two #1 teams. CM has some big kids and so does belfry. This game will be won in the trenches. And I believe Belfry will own the trenches. Game will be close in first half then belfry stretches out their lead. Belfry takes it 31-14.
Please tell me Belfry will enter the field to YMCA and do that dance.
you are dumber than a coal bucket!!!!:blabbermo
Belfry wins 20-14:please:
Midland by 12.

The Current Top 25 Small School Teams in the Country... look who is #24 and #25!
I think this is going to be a HUGE test for the Pirates! CM has depth, that could hurt us! They can keep fresh players in, that will hurt Belfry. Belfry has to keep the fumbles at bay, we can't have fumbles or this game may turn out to be a run away. Do I feel the Pirates can beat CM? Absolutely!!! It will be a huge game! I'm taking my Pirates on this one, because I really feel that they can and will do this, but we have to play some dang good ball! I feel this will be only a 3-6 point victory, I feel Belfry will be going for some field goals... Belfry- 24 CM-17 TongueirateSho :redboxer:

That is pretty cool, look how close they computer rankings are. I think that is the game a lot of people want to see in BG this year

Preview of the game from WV paper
I really don't know much about Cabell Midland, and understand WV football generally aint quite as good, but I think them being no 1 in the state regardless of class says a lot. They may not be a Louisville Male who would beat Belfry by almost 50, but I think this team will win by 20. Anything less than 20 I think would be a good showing by Belfry.

Simon Kenton is an excellent comparison in Kentucky.

Not on the level of Male and Trinity... but comparable to a really good 6A team.
