Belfry @ Cabell-Midland 10/02
Love this matchup. Would like to see more games between some of the mountain powers from different state. It would be fun to see some more games like Pikeville-Bluefield, Bell County-Richlands, Prestonsburg-Wayne, etc. As for this week, I'll take Belfry in an old-school slugfest 17-14.
cabell midland 35 belfry 7 hell just because johnson central played them hard doesn,t me belfry will we have to learn to beat johnson central they own us:truestory:

This was also the same year belfry suffered it's only losing season under Coach Haywood. We were 4-7 that year. I'm pretty sure one of the four wins was against pikeville.

Pikeville also went to Bluefield,WV when the Beavers were loaded... I think it was that Brent Coleman team... and crushed Bluefield.

With that said, big difference between small class WV football and Class 3A.

Remember good luck and hopefully both teams come out of this battle with no injuries. Looks like both teams are headed for the playoffs in their respective states.

Tell us more about CM

What can we all expect? What has allowed thme to turn the corner froma Top 5 team into a #1 team?

Used as an intimidation factor and pump up method before their games. Belfry fans in attendance will witness Midlands Maori Haka. In the past the Pirates have neutralized opponents intimidation factors in various ways (the 79 Highlands story comes to mind). What do you think? Does the war chant with Midlands numbers intimidate the Pirates this Friday night?
That's a big ol boy leading the chant

It will take way more than that to intimidate the Pirates !!!!!:lmao:

Your boy doesn't play anymore and it doesn't matter if JC owns us or not, getting better as a football team is all Belfry cares about and their sights are set on the rest of 3A.
They are not worried about 4A.

I came here to troll around a little bit to be honest, seeing as to how pj was getting so many ruffled up (and hes right about Boyle>Belfry by a lot) but after seeing that ive never wanted belfry to win more than I do this week. Hell, even I want to play just to knock the mullet off 75's head.
Cmon Belfry. Do us all a favor and beat knock the shit out of them.

If me and PJ would have went to our coach with that song and dance routine we would have still been running Confusednicker:
Wow - I am ok with trying to intimidate your opponent. But that fell FLAT for me.

I do agree 46 looked like a stout high school ball player 😉

Nobody in 3A over Belfry "by a lot". Not saying teams can't beat them, but Boyle and Belfry both have impressive resumes so far, but Boyle has a much tougher road to go to BG than Belfry does. IMO they are 1a and 1b in 3a with each team able to make a great case for the top spot. Central Hardin is an average 6a team at best and everyone points to that win for Boyle and Boyle had to go to the wire with them and defend a two point conversion and Belfry had their way with an average 6a team in Tates Creek although they gave up some points, so the argument that Boyle is a lot better than Belfry is not valid IMO just as it would be invalid to say Belfry is a lot better than Boyle. If Boyle makes it to state they would be a worthy opponent for anyone. Seems to me a lot of people like to hand out crowns midway through the season. Do not forget who is the champ and who has been to the finals 5 straight years and is a big favorite to return to BG. Boyle has a nice win over Danville and Belfry has nice wins over several good teams also.

That's so horrible...just embarrassingly horrible.
What was that I just watched? I was so scared I laughed.
Not really understanding the Dance, but obviously they can back it up and I think they really use it as a distraction. No big deal if you don't let it affect your mindset. Easiest way to combat the Dance is line up and drive it down their gut and then the dance won't mean as much.:redboxer:
Belfry wins this game easy if the referee lets them play .
When c.m played Johnson central there starting running back didn't like contact they brought in another back I think number 6 he looked pretty good , the big kid that going to wvu, good player but he don't stay home he over runs on the defensive end jc. Had a couple good counter runs on him , and 3 td in the air because they got caught trying play 10 in the box.
I just find the dance confusing and almost insulting. Does Cabell Midland have ties to the Maori Tribe that I am unaware of? The Maori basically attempted to fight their own revolution against the British Empire and lost most of their land due to their uprising. I just don't understand how a bunch of white kids relate to the ingenious rebels who fought to keep their land out of British hands. They have been doing this since at least 2012 but maybe they should find something more fitting for their location and background.

The entrance with the motorcycle is fine, a bit over the top with the pyro but not much different than Belfry's tunnel time. Though I don't really find tunnel time to be intimidating. It's more of a community support thing. To me tunnel time represents to the team that while they are putting their bodies on the line the fans are on the field with them in spirit.

I will defend them a little.

On Netflix there is a kind of corny rugby movie where the team does the Haka before every game. The intent in the movie is what the specific dance signifies. It is about respect for those who came before and honoring their family while showing solidarity as an unit.

For this intent I am fine with it and don't find it offensive.

I don't have a real problem with any of the stuff they do... just a lot of theatrics. As bucslover said though, if you can back it up then you can do it. So far they have backed it up so if they want to walk elephants and bring clowns on mini motorcyles out to pump themselves and their fans up then have at it.

What I can say though is Belfry won't be staring with wide eyes with pee running down their leg.
This is just a mind game meant to get their blood pumping, and maybe even think they've intimidated somebody.

It would not be an issue with me.

That is not to say that I wouldn't be wide eyed with pee running down my leg!!
Confusednicker:
They also done this in the tv series Friday night lights. It's just something they do to get themselves hyped up before a game. From what I've seen they have been doing it for years. People making a big deal out of nothing. It's kids having fun before a game.
I don't think I have seen anyone making a big deal out of it. I might have said I don't understand it and it's tie to WV and that its slightly offensive to the Maori. However after researching into the subject I see that the Maori take pride in the fact that the Ka Mate War Chant is shared and remembered even though they lost in their uprising.

Usually things like this are steeped in traditions that are tied some element of local folk lore or history. This is neither of those. I have seen it used in Rugby by New Zealands team the All Blacks (great vid below). I only found it odd because I don't see the relationship to Knights or WV. The origin of it would be an interesting story.

Everyone has their rituals that people find strange, even Belfry. Coach Haywood describes one of these in his book.

The video wasn't posted to for any other reason than to show some Belfry fans what some of the sights they might see on Friday will be. As someone who can't travel 8+ hours weekly to watch the games these types of things are the only things that help set the atmosphere of the week.

This going to be a great Game.
In the last 30 years what Belfry record, It dont matter back when dionsaurs were still walking the earth. Overall kentucky Highschool Football better than West Virginia, Just Like Tennessee and Ohio Football Better than Kentucky Overall!!
Does wv power ratings system, which decides who makes the playoff and seeding, still not give weight to quality of out of state opponent? If so this was gutsy of cm to play a quality out of state team.

For the record this one isn't as obvious as most think either.

The best teams in Kentucky generally can match up one vs. one against Tennessee.

Trinity has beat the best of Tennessee's big schools.

Bowling Green beat some of Kentucky's best bigger schools.

Belfry has proven they could match up with the best of the mid-size schools.

The difference between these two states is depth of teams. Tennessee genuinely have more of those "good" teams... and more of the higher echeclon teams.

In Kentucky you may have 8-10 high level "big" schools, and 3 or 4 "elite" level teams (Trinity and Male for example right now). In Tennessee you may have 13-15 high level schools and 6-7 elite teams.

In Kentucky you may have 9-10 high level small/mid-size schools (think of like a NewCath, LexCath, Murray), and 6 or 7 elite level small/mid-size schools (Belfry, Boyle, Central, DeSales, Mayfield, etc) whereas in Tennessee that number may be 14-15 high level and 9-10 elite level.

In all it's just a deeper level of competition and a little more parody.

West Virginia doesn't have a team usually on the level of a Trinity or a Male this year. Kentucky's good for a National Top 100 school or two at least every other year... West Virginia rarely will have that.

Cabell Midland could play with anyone else in Kentucky not named Trinity or Male, but would probably be like the #4 or #5 6A team and maybe #7 or #8 overall in Kentucky.

Kentucky also has the depth advantage... once you get outside of Class 3A in WV, which may have 8 or 9 solid teams, pickings get quite slim. Each smaller class will have a couple very good teams, but then it drops in drastic fashon.

I like MCMiner and his Mingo Central program is ascending very well.. but they are currently the #5 2A team in West Virginia and would probably be unranked in Kentucky 3A (around #12 or #13) and probably only #9 at best in Kentucky 2A.

I respectively diagree...no one has talked Crap about your town team or kids. If anything praises have been given with the exception of the wsaz reporting of the shooting that took place at the flea market. So that wasn't Crap talking it was actual news. As for the rest of your post i agree, the kids play the game and I too wish for an injury free game.
Reading this thread is hilarious and sad at the same time. It has a little of everything. It's got the usual trolls, the usual arrogant one's, videos, fans turning on their own. It's freaking nuts on here, but makes for funny reading.
My JR year at Belfry, we played at Man. At the end of the game, one of the players from Man dropped/threw his helmet and hit Jimmy Stepp in the head...that was a horrible place to play...

Thanks EKU for being civil. I think the biggest difference is the work these kids put in the weight room. These kids don't go on summer vacations for the past two years anyways. They are in the weight room dedicated to getting better. Most of the kids have become football only athletes. Their decisions. I will give my kid as an example: used to play basketball and baseball. He also did quite well wrestling. There are quite a few kids who would be state champion wrestlers if they would go back to wrestling. They are committed and are buying into Coach's gameplan. They will be ready to play at home. They have played 4 road games in the first five. Both teams that played for the AAA state championship last year and won. (Capital and South Charleston). Most kids playing on just one side of the ball. This is the most in shape team I have seen at Midland. Second half of season we have 4 home games and 1 more road game. Should be a great game. Rumors has it that you guys will bring 3000 fans. If so that is a huge following. Good luck and hope for the best. Safe travels.

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers Crossbones. Just looked that way to me. Good luck and safe travels.

In your case its not fear, its age. :lmao:
The Pirates represent the Bluegrass well once again this week.

Belfry 35
Midland 13

Pulling for the Pirates, but good luck to both on an injury free game.
