Now I know it's early & I'll get all kinds of heat for this. But the thought just came to my head & I realized that it's not a far strech. But I do expect to hear it from all the other city slickers on here haha. I've been pondering on it & it's not a bad thought to believe that A-Pikeville/Paintsville , AAA-Belfry , AAAA-JC & AAAAA-Pulaski could all possibly bring home the trophy.
Now of course I have the upmost respect for Beechwood (Favorite) , Lex Cath, Central, Boyle, Obc, Highlands, Graves, & BG. Any of them could also be holding a trophy up in December. Remember it's just a thought. Not my picks. Because, well it's too early for that. Just thought some of my fellow BGR posters would enjoy a good thread. Let's hear it.

The Cash kid give Paintsville a lot of hope but a State Title I don't think so
Belfry has the best chance of all 4
JC no way to much going on in 4A
Pulaski could but the odds are not in their favor

I dont think it is possible, and there isn't a mountain to be seen in Pulaski County

I only see Belfry being in contention for a state title.

You don't think Pikeville or Paintsville either one plays for it?

I think you are confusing 4A and 5A.
I think JC has the best chance of the lot. The #3 team is Ashland who they destroyed last year and the #2 team is South Warren who never could even reach a 3A Title game. Right now I would have to say JC is the favorite in 4A.
Belfry definitely has a good shot, but 3A has 3 or 4 teams that could easily beat Belfry and another 3-4 who could beat them on the right night.
5A if you consider Pulaski a mountain team they have a legit shot but I could easily see them eliminated in the Regional Finals. Much like Belfry there are several team who can beat them any given night.
1A I think Paintsville and Pikeville either have a chance... but think both are decided underdogs to Beechwood
2A= No Shot

Paintsville - no shot
Pikeville - outside shot
Belfry - decent shot
JC - decent shot
Pulaski - decent shot
All IMO. I will go with 1 mountain title. Hope it's more but could even be 0.

1 at best and Belfry has no shot.

Out of all Honesty their only one and I dont see them winning it this year. I think mountain football is down. Their is only a handful a decent teams not great. Belfry Johnson Central, Paintsville, Pulaski County and Leslie County outside of that anyone can beat anyone! We have this conversation every year. same teams in the semifinals 80% of the time and hardly outside of Belfry who else from the mountains.

Johnson Central wins State Title this year. Pulaski, Belfry, Pikeville toss up... Desales/Mayfield on another level in 2A.. No 6A...

Boyle will win 3a. They are clearly the best team in the class. I say JC has a chance tho.

1A - always interesting because depth plays an issue. If you can get to Beechwood, they're good, but not the monster they were and Mayfield is gone. I wouldn't count Raceland out of the eastern mix here either.
2A - no chance. Desales is hammering 6A Louisville teams, and Mayfield is Mayfield. All due respect, but those two teams probably easily handle any 606 small school.
3A - this'll be the most interesting. Belfry's traditional cakewalk to state has become a gauntlet. Still, they could win if they stay healthy and fix their personnel issues. Central is down. Lex Cath has athletes but weak on the line. Think it is either Boyle of Belfry here.
4A - two horse race between JC and Ashland to go to the finals, I think (depending on how Scott keeps doing, maybe 3; after the hammering Bourbon took, not sold there). About 3/4 of the good 4A teams are in the west; luckily only one can come out. I favor JC/Ashland winner to be at least runner-up in 4A with a fair shot to win.
5A- Pulaski looks like a solid pick. They picked a good year for BG, HHS, CCH to all be terrible and them to be really good. Timing is everything. Pretty good showing against Scott Co, which is probably a top 3 team in the state and would win any other class.
So, 4 titles, probably not. I'd say one with a couple runners up. Won't say which one.

I knew 2A mountain teams had no chance which is why I didn't even bother mentioning it in this thread. But whoever said Leslie County up there is nuts lol. They can't beat Shelby Valley. No one from the East is beating NewCath this year. Which I look for Shelby Valley to play them again and get about the same result.

4 is very doubtful.
The favorites in the 4 classes mentioned should be
1a Beechwood
3a Boyle County
4a South Warren
5a this is hard to call now, I might say Pulaski County is favorite, as mentioned above good timing Bowling Green, Highlands, both seem to be alittle down compared to past years.
2a, and 6a zero chance

If we had the championships right now...............
1A. With Mayfield gone I think Pikeville or Paintsville have a very good shot. Remember Beechwood has a good program but Mayfield was always a notch better.
2A. Somerset, Shelby Valley and Leslie County all have good teams but the top 5 of 2A is way too stacked with teams like Desales, Mayfield and NewportCC
3A. Belfry is the champs till someone beats em, but I believe like a lot have said, I think 2 or 3 teams at the top of 3A are good enough to take Belfry out right now, but Belfry always gets way better by the playoffs. I don't think Bell or Corbin are good enough to even think about it at this point. I said at the end of last season that Boyle would own 3A this season and I'm sticking to that prediction.
4A. IMO Johnson Central is the hands down favorite so if you disagree name me a 4A team who is better. For years it's been Highlands, Covington and then Johnson Central and everyone knows it.
5A. I believe Pulaski is still the best team in 5A till someone proves otherwise. I think their game against 6A Scott County is looking better and better as the season goes along. Southwestern to this point is a little overrated.
6A. ?????lol
I can see 2 possibly 3 champions coming from the mountains if they played it right now, but a lot can change from now to December.

I think Johnson Central has a very good shot this year. South Warren also. I keep seeing Belfry not getting a lot of love on here this year. What have they lost? Why are people counting them out already. I honestly do not know. Haven't seen them play.

Not sure what makes them think they have the right to say anything negative towards Belfry. I for one hope and pray Belfry sends them and their "fans"to the house crying later this year.

Not so much counting Belfry out. They're probably better than last year and they'll be a tough out for anyone. But it won't be just them and Central now; the competition has also gotten better.

I still don't understand why no one thinks South Western has just a good of chance to win 5A as anyone. They have a solid offensive line, 2 quality backs, one of which will be all-state, a dominate defensive line, and one of the best as a head coach. We will find out Oct.23rd, South Western vs. PC. Go Maroons!:pondering:

I think that people need to understand that Johnson Central would be ranked No. 1 in 4A, even if the realignment had not taken Highlands, Covington Catholic, Boyle County, and Lexington Catholic out of the class. The Golden Eagles had an outstanding defensive team last season. They have a three year starter at QB (one season as a freshman for Sheldon Clark), several key offensive players, and some very talented young backs as well.
Although I see JC as a big favorite to win another district title, if Ashland manages to upset them, then I think that the Tomcats would have a great shot at the state title. I don't really understand the quibbling over what constitutes a mountain team. If Pulaski is a mountain team, then so are Ashland and other teams in the tri-state area. Anybody who has had to fly into the airport across the Big Sandy river and knows that the mountains (or, if you prefer large hills) in the general area make landing a little bit scary.
I am not saying that South Warren will not win the 4A title, but like EKUAlum05 observed, SW nevr managed to reach the state 3A finals and were eliminated from the playoffs last season by a Central team that also failed to take home the title. Johnson Central was better than South Warren last season and I don't think that they returned any more talent than JC did.
I would not count Highlands and Covington Catholic out in 5A, but Pulaski County has an excellent shot at a title this season. Belfry has a solid chance of repeating but the addition of Boyle and Lexington Catholic to 3A ensures that the Pirates will not have an easy path to the title.
