Starting to solidify a bit. Will be some more movement over the next few weeks as district games begin to kick in, but overall I think among the more fair rankings.

Campbellsville getting some love and bumping Raceland out of the top 5.

Curious how Bryan Station hammers Cooper, but, Cooper remains ahead of them in the 6a rankings..
Collins remains in Top 10 after bad loss to Eastern? Didn't CAL beat Eastern by about 50 the week before?
N.Oldham may still be a Top 10 4a team, but, if they are, then E'Town should be a lot higher in 3a.
Overall, looks pretty good, but, these are a few things that stuck out to me.

3A still bugs me. At this point games have been played. What a team did last year should not matter in rankings.
I am a die hard Belfry fan but I am also a football fan and looking at resumes of wins this season I can not realistically say Belfry is #1 in 3A. Wins over Harlan Co and Tates Creek are not key wins. Both teams hold their only wins over schools who are terrible.
Boyle Co. is the sole loss for Central Hardin, Bell Co and Danville. While non of those three teams are likely State Title contenders (sorry Bell fans, just being honest) they were all handled with ease. They are definitely stronger competition at this point in the season than Tates Creek and Harlan Co.
3A to me:
Boyle
Belfry
To me 3A (and if its happening in 3A it is in other classes) has too much weight put on what someone did last year or hype for this year. A few examples:
no votes for Hart Co. even though they are 3 - 0 and hold a win over a solid Ballard team, yet Henry Co also 3 - 0 has no quality wins and received votes. The difference? Henry Co was 7 -4 last year while Hart Co was 2 - 8.
Yes Lex Cath and Central will be playoff contenders but at this point at 1-2 each do they really warrant spots 4 and 5? Should rankings be based off potential, past production and the "they'' be ok" feeling? OR should they be based on how teams are performing on the field and the competition they are playing.

I see that the 3 A poll is a product of the part of the state the voters are from.

I agree I don't see how Lex cath and Lou central should be ranked any higher than 7TH or 8TH.

I agree that Boyle definitely is #1 in 3A without a question at this point.
I don't agree about LexCath and Central being so low.
I would argue that outside of Boyle and Belfry no team in 3A would have a better record or better outcome with either of their schedules.

Corbin to me is way too high. They have played noone of substance and truth be told haven't looked really very good even in doing so.
Corbin has a tough 3 game stretch coming up that I expect them to take two losses.

1 Boyle
2 Corbin
3 Belfry
4 Lex Cath
I expect Corbin to drop maybe 1 of the next 3 games... I also see them fighting it out with the Rebels at Bowling Green come December.

If Corbin wins the next 3, I expect them to solidify the top team in the east. I don't think they can handle Boyle Co. Though. They will keep getting better and better as the season progresses. They are gonna be tuff for the foreseeable future. As for the present Rankings I agree... Boyle, Belfry, Corbin, Lex Cath.
By seasons end, The east teams will be Corbin Belfry - Boyle Central.

@EKUAlum: I agree on Corbin. I also agree on on the Schedules of Central and Lex Cath and no other team having a better record with those schedules in 3A if they played them, but does playing an awesome schedule and coming out with an L to tough teams constitute a high ranking?
Belfry, Boyle and Corbin all have pretty tough games for the next 4 weeks. I think after that point we will see a more solid set of rankings in 3A.

This is just me being curious to your opinion... dont take it as a slight
With respect what have you seen that I haven't with Corbin because we are clearly on the opposite ends of the spectrum?
They have played two very mediocre teams in Waggener and Whitley County and beat them soundly, but not in the dominant manner expected.
They played an awful Clay County team that they should have had a running clock by Halftime against and Clay actually had some success moving the ball and also moments of slowing down the Corbin offense. Truth be told I came away after watching that game a little disappointed in Corbin.
I didn't see a lot of team speed, their passing game lacks a vertical component, their backs run hard but are not extremely skilled, their Defense plays tough and is well coached but lacks elite size or overall team speed.
Truth be told I expect them to beat Danville but lose to Southwestern and get crushed by Mayfield.
I know they will improve as the season goes because they are so young..but I would take a healthy Russell over Corbin right now from what I have seen thusfar. I dont think Corbin is anywhere close to being as good as they were last year at this time.
Was I just reading too much into a game that Corbin was sleep walking through or have you seen something in the other action that suggests otherwise?
09-08-2015, 04:26 PM
I think you have to consider 1) the record, 2) How teams are perforning, 3) competition, 4) common opponents and opponents opponent, 5) what returned from prior year, 6) how they performed last year and 7) history of the program.. An example of #7, Highlands loses by a lot to a Cooper team who no one really had talked about much, certainly nowhere to be found in the 6a Top 10. Then they lose again with a running clock in the 1st half, sit at 1-2 and their win was against an average to slightly above average, at best, program. Since that teams name is Highlands, they still rank 5th in the 5a polls.. If that teams name was Holmes and performed exactly the same, most people would call that team a cupcake, but, history tells us different, so, the past season and past history of a school is a consideration you have to take into affect. Some will give it a lot of consideration and others not so much, but, the average weight should balance out about right between all the voters.

Next 4 games for top 3 in 3A in deeper look.
Belfry:
Newport Central Catholic - BGR #6 in 2A. Always a 2A contender weakest of the next 4
Pikeville - BGR #4 in 1A. Has the blueprint to beat Belfry, Contender in the East.
Knoxville Cath - Solid TN team, deep 2014 playoff run. 2 losses on the year both to top 15 TN teams.
@Cabell Midland - #4 WV Team on Max Preps, #2 WSAZ WV Rankings.
Boyle:
Anderson County - BGR #4 in 5A
@Collins - BGR# 7 in 4A
@Lincoln County - 5A #32 Max Preps
@Garrard County - Received top 10 votes from BGR, 3A #12 Max Preps/82 in the state
Corbin:
Danville - BGR #8 in 2A
Southwestern - BGR #6 in 5A
Mayfield - BGR #2 in 2A
@Jackson County - #38 in 3A Max Preps
Corbin and Boyle both have 1 pretty weak opponent during the 3 week span. Belfry will have 4 tough weeks. Belfry gets 3 of those games at home but the toughest will be on the road I see 3 - 1 at best 2 - 2 at worst. Boyle has to travel 3 straight weeks but they get a weak Lincoln in the middle of the road trip I predict 3-1 or 4 - 0. I see Corbin going 2-2 during the stretch.

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Also you would be incorrect...I'm of the mindset that if you are the defending champ, and still winning, you retain #1 until and if you lose. Some may feel that does too much disservice to accomplishments of another team. But I don't feel that is the case. Looking at the Tate's Creek win, for example, Belfry for the most part did well in facing what I believe is the best qb they will face all year. TC isn't a BAD team, certainly not a 6A power, but definitely not a, for example, McCreary County. The 1st half wasn't pretty, but most Belfry teams don't hit their stride until later in the season anyway. And they still did well finishing them off. Then turned around, and in less than a week, thoroughly dominated Harlan County with a freshman qb at the helm, while also holding HC to less than 100 yards of total offense. HC will not be mistaken for Central Hardin any time soon, nor will TC. But I don't see anything from their two games that merits me taking AWAY their #1 spot. Just my two cents

I think they go 4-0 myself but Anderson and Collins are definitely the class of those two games. Anderson had offensive success against Boyle last year..just couldn't stop them.
Collins has the athletes to pick Boyle off on an "off" night.
With that said, I will be a bit surprised if anyone can hang within 2 TD's of Boyle during that stretch.

I think the 4 - 0 is most likely but the 1 loss is only if Anderson Co can put it together and pull it off. The other three games I think Boyle takes with ease.

All Boyle co arguments I can understand along with Belfry right now are the clear cut 1 and 2 in 3a in what ever order you may have them. These Corbin arguments have no justification until they prove something on the field which shows they should be ranked ahead of the above mentioned 2 teams which IMO has not happened yet.

I agree that Adair, Hart, and Henry have started well but here is what it Top 10 in 3A would look like based on record alone:
Adair County
Corbin
Boyle County
Elizabethtown
Hart County
Henry County
Union County
Belfry
Morgan County
So does that look better? Russell would be #11 as the other undefeated team.
With that said, I fully agree that many teams have their past held against them.
