Will teams with Rebels as a mascot be forced to change their mascots to be politically correct?
06-23-2015, 07:39 PM
It's crazy, but I can see it happening. Lot of activities protested and got the Native American logo or mascot changed.

If I were a team like Boyle County where I don't have a mascot resembling a confederate soldier and just go by "Rebels"... I would simply claim my mascot was based off Star Wars so I could keep it.
Now Allen Central and Casey County may have some issues though.

As long as a Confederate flag or a goatee wearing, cane wielding, southern plantation owning mascot(ala Ole Miss) is nowhere to be seen, I think you're safe. I can't imagine anyone having a legitimate gripe with a school like Boyle Co., for example.

This is going to be a large topic going into the 2016 election. I under no circumstances support the confederacy. You should never raise your flag for an asinine cause like slavery anyway. But the political issue at hand is a very real one.
Will we see schools change mascots? Ole Miss has to come to mind. Deep in the heart of Dixie, I don't think you will ever see a change like that. So what about back home? In all fairness, isn't this a freedom of speech conflict? In my opinion schools shouldn't be forced to change mascots.
If a school is forced to change mascots due to political correctness, it's only a matter of time before everything becomes offensive.

I will say one thing on this topic for now, I as an American, do not appreciate one bit, standing for the National Anthem at a certain school and facing our flag with the flag of a treasonous nation standing right beside it. I have ill will toward the CSA flag to begin with, but to put it next to our flag while our national anthem plays is unacceptable, IMO.

Its all a bunch of political correctness BS anyway. Fly the flag if you want, dont make schools change anything. Geez, this country is going downhill fast.

I agree with you and sadly most people believe everything they were taught in history class at school instead of learning the truth for themselves. this nation is made up of mostly gullible people.

I did hear there was a current uproar over the discrimination of yellow jackets being shown as orange and white instead of black and yellow at a certain school

If schools were forced to replace Indian Mascots like they were, you can bet your :moon: they can get a confederate looking soldier away from one as well.

Who is forcing them to replace the mascot?

That goatee wearing cane wielder could also be called a Colonel. One of these days, after the Political Correctness Police liberals do away with the confederate flag and the name "rebel" for good....they will go after the Colonels mascot next because that could be considered just another name for a rebel plantation owner. Then Whitley is square in the crosshairs of the PC police. Maybe take a demotion to the Captains or switch armed forces to the (Danville) Admirals or the (Perry County Central) Commodores. I personally think that Whitley County Jarheads sounds pretty catchy. Like ol' Merle Haggard says in that old song, "We'll all be drinking that free Bubble Up and eating that Rainbow Stew" before the liberals are happy.

I'm dreading the day that the idiots I mean the politically correct forced my Colonels to change their mascot. The Cumberland College Indians were changed to University of the Cumberlands Patriots.is that also incorrect? we all know the other high school in Williamsburg is incorrect

My sentiments exactly! We disagree on a lot of things, but the fact that the CSA were TREASONOUS ***** are the reason why that flag should NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER be raised, sold, distributed, etc. in the United States. I don't care what people say about "heritage" and showing support for their family members who died fighting for the CSA. They chose WRONG! They chose to fight with TRAITORS! They are no better, and deserve no better, than Benedict Arnold. If I'm correct, isn't it against federal law to have anything honoring (in name) Arnold? I think Saratoga did in the 1930's but was forced to remove a plaque that had his name on it. They eventually put it back out later in the 1990s or around that time span. But, again, meeting heavy protest by citizens and federal officials.
Folks, I'm sorry. But if you are sympathetic to this flag for "heritage" reasons, then you are saying that you side with traitors. I know some of you had family members/ancestors who may have been confederates. But would you back them if they joined ISIS today? I doubt you would fly an ISIS flag in your back yard, would you?
Our Founding Fathers committed treason for the right reasons. The CSA did it for the wrong ones. They masked it behind constitutional and "states" rights. But we know why they rebelled. It wasn't for those reasons. It was to preserve the livelihood of the 1-2% of southerners who were part of the Planter class and didn't want to chance losing their slaves and having to....gulp.....start over and PAY their workers! Imagine that.
OK...off my rant.....:biglmao:

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I had ancestors on both sides in the Civil War. I am proud of being from what I consider the "South". I believe in manners including opening doors for women, saying "thank you" and "please" and I am VERY conservative about the way I feel about gun rights and other hot button issues (eg...homosexuality and abortion). I also pray that the devil in South Carolina who killed those poor people at that church gets the chair for what he's done. I don't apologize for identifying with the south though, no matter how much brow beating or finger pointing someone wants to do trying to shame me for doing so. I am also proud of being a U.S. citizen and I've had family who have participated in World Wars II and Korea. You can be from the South, proud of it, and proud to be from the U.S. and not be treasonous to your country. Like I said, opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one. Some just sound off more than others.

Not one single individual who has ranted on Facebook this week or on message boards about confederate flags, mascots and use thereof has any idea what it truly feels like to feel "offended" by those symbols. None of us owned slaves, or were subject to slavery and the atrocity that it was. None of us had our homes raided by Union soldiers and told that the village where you lived is now under Union control and you cannot be a Confederate sympathizer any longer and that your reasoning for wanting independence is wrong.
"But I have ancestors who (owned or were) slaves"...Stop it. You can't remember your lineage past your grandma.
None of us truly understand what it must have been like to be "offended" either by Union/Confederate influences - so why do we act like we do? Because the media tells you to? Because a politician uses a tragic act of violence on a black church for political gain?
Since none of us lived during that time to truly view those symbols as offensive, shouldn't we just call those flags and such what they truly are? HISTORY.
It's in the past...Let's leave it there and move on. Stop acting like it still offends you and attacking others who recognize history, both the good and bad.

They had left the Union before Ft Sumpter, a fort that the Union occupied that was no longer a part of the Union. No treason I can see from leaving the Union, that was a states right nor for attacking the fort to reclaim their territory after the Union refused to leave.
