I continue to listen to a lot of this silliness on here and I just shake my head laugh.
However, I do want to comment on this ridiculous post.
I know Donnie and he is a good guy and really means well for the kids. He will try his best.
But to say that talent left SW during Donnie's time is absurd. In fact, Coach French did what he did this year with almost exactly the same kids that Southwestern had the year before. Fannin was the only kid who left and returned.
SW picked up three noticeable kids in Edwards, Butt and Fannin. Edwards and Butt were only eighth graders the previous year. However, French lost five starting juniors from the previous year that did not come out and play as seniors. Two of the best DB's in the county and three starting offensive lineman with lots of size. That is why the whole offensive and defensive lines got reworked this year. If those five guys had stayed and played, who knows?
All I will say is Blair is a heckuva defensive coordinator and we only averaged giving up about 10 points per game this year.

South recently hired Clay Co former HC Evan Napier as a assistant coach. Good hire

They have already canceled their jv schedule for the year if that's any indication of numbers it's not a good one

Someone said that SL has cancelled all JV games this yr. Any truth to that.
Like I said you are correct no JV schedule

No jv schedule but they do have 22 or 23 freshman to be up lifting. So thats a good sign. They decided to just play a freshman schedule.

South has had over 30 kids on each of their middle school teams the last few years. I know my sons 6th grade team 2 years ago had almost 40 on it. They was pretty good team. Last year he couldnt play broke his leg (skating) but I think they still had about 30. Got to figure out how to keep them playing.

Has spring practice started for the CARDS yet?

The numbers will start to increase over the next couple of years and so will the talent. Some good classes coming up from middle school.

You have success on the field before numbers will pickup. Numbers are down at most schools across the nation.

Not good. Needed Ricky to stay with the program.

Coach Burdine must have some guys in mind. But in a day its hard to get assistants 4 would be a big loss.

I don't see a Burdine staying very long.

I think he will be a two yr guy.

Why won't that be a good decision? The chuck and duck, stop the clock, give the ball back to the other team and put a lot more stress on your defense hasn't exactly boded well for them. They have been pretty experienced the last few years, also haven't they? I mean, it's not like they were throwing a bunch of freshmen and sophomores to the wolves...when you do that, nothing works. Do something to get out alive, that will give you a chance in the games where you have a legit shot.
I think the T, Wing T, Bone, Flex, etc...something ball control where if nothing else, it will shorten the game to make things more respectable is exactly what they need.

So just find a way to lose more respectably? You can control the ball and the clock while running a balanced offense. South Laurel has the athletes needed to compete, but they have always had trouble getting them out. This will not help them any with numbers.

Against the people you have zero shot against? Sure. I'm all for setting goals high, but you also have to be realistic (you don't have to tell that to the kids, but amongst the staff, sure).
Just because you get in the T, Bone, Flex, Wing T, etc. doesn't mean you can't have a "balanced" offense. Far from it, actually. But, most don't realize that.
Secondly, 50-50 balance if overrated. They need to establish some sort of strong running game first and foremost. Do it yourself and be able to stop it, too. Then build from that. (I'm not sure if you were referring to 50-50 or not, just throwing that out there for those that might).
So, they have been running a scheme that is supposed to be attractive to the athletes in the halls who don't play with no luck, why not give this a shot?
What evidence is there supporting that they need to stay in the spread?
...then, again I've never been one who has bought into the "spread makes everything better" philosophy. Get your butts handed to you more years than not for the last 15 in the spread, but lets not give an old school approach a chance. I've never really bought into that whole mentality.

First, just let me say I agree with a lot you have said and there isn't a right or wrong as long as a coach knows how to run their offense efficiently. I grew up in the bone and still love it today. I watched my high school convert over to the spread this year. I was scared to death of abandoning the power run game that developed our tradition. However, we established a power run game from the spread and multiple formations. I'm a firm believer you can build a philosophy (such as a power run team) from just about any formation. As far as "balanced" goes I should have elaborated more. I was referring to being balanced in formations you show your opponent as well as the play ratio. I would prefer somewhere in between 60-40 and 70-30 run oriented offense. With all of this said the most important thing to do is play situations and not what your offensive scheme deems necessary. If you're on the goaline with a beast a running back you don't throw the ball because that's the system you run, or if it's 1st and long or 3rd and long you don't have to run the ball because you're a power run football team...

Formation is just where you stand, not what you do  I like your thinking!

Who is the OC? Burdine was DC, before that youth league HC? And there is already a smash mouth team in the county
04-21-2015, 04:11 AM
New HC hasn't called an offensive football play since youth league. Former Clay Co head coach will coordinate offense or defense.

Even more of a reason to go that route if you ask me...which, nobody has. :biglmao:

How many players will SLHS have on the roster come August?
05-04-2015, 11:03 PM
gonna be a tough road for SL this season
05-06-2015, 03:56 PM
At this point, it's the Jimmys and Joes not the x's and o's for South. The rough part of all this deal is kids want to be a part of a winner before they'll play, and teams need the best athletes to win. It's a vicious circle. I don't envy the job ahead of the coaching staff.
