I am not sure if I see any wins in that schedule next year, Clay could possibly sneak up on somebody but I don't see the Tigers being the favorite in a lot of games.
#3
1-9
#4
I'm gonna go out on a limb at say 2-8. The schedule is not an easy one. Wayne, rock and Knox...the district is a pretty solid district. Plus you have a new system coming in so its gonna be rocky at first. Hopefully were wrong but I don't see a ton of wins this season. Good luck to Coach Combs and Tigers.

1-9 or 2-8 would be a failure of a season in my eyes. I'm not asking to win the district championship but I hope we compete.

How many kids are out for weightlifting? For Combs and staff to win, we have to get our boys playing football. Go Tigers!!

I think there's a chance that Clay doesn't win a game if they get a wrong bounce in a few games. Here's the question, if Clay comes out and doesn't win, will Combs be under pressure? The coaches were thrown under the bus for not producing last season so obviously many in the community feel that the talent is there and the team should have been producing wins on the field. I keep hearing its going to take 4-6 years to rebuild and I just don't buy that.
#7
After talking with Justin today I think he will be fine. If he doesn't win he doesn't win. It does take time to build a program. If that is what clay is wanting. He's not gonna come in his first year and win 10 games. Heck fire if he wins three he has done more than they have the past 4 years. He said he had around 30-35 consistently in the weight room without basketball, baseball and something about archery. I didn't know schools had that. He will win games. This year who knows but in the future he will win games. I'm gonna change my prediction to 5-5 because I believe in the kid and he has them working their tails off. When the basketball players get there it will be even better.
#8
Who do you have them beating?
#9
I'll say Rowan, East, West, Russell and South. Those aren't gimmee games either. But like I said I have faith in the kid and know he works hard at what he does. He will be fine.
#10
I think he will be fine eventually, I just expect a rough year this year, My only worry for him will be the natives will get restless, they feel they should be competing right away. Rowan will be tough, Ray Graham is a heckuva ball coach. I could see South being a win but the rest I have Clay being slight underdogs.
#11
Clay County needs to be patient. Very tough schedule in a rebuilding year. It will take 2 or 3 years before Clay will be able to make a run at a district title.
#12
The past coaching staff wasn't let go just because of losing games. Many many other reason.
This coach has already gained respect of the kids, parents and community. I hear kids excited again and working hard to improve. They will be struggles and losses but the kids are learning things about football that they had never been taught and being treated great in the process. Go Tiger Football
#13
I don't buy "the kids are being taught new things about football". Football isn't rocket science. I just hope are expectations are higher than 2 or 3 wins. I think Combs is a great fit for us. He has to get players out though. 30-35 players isn't much. Historically, basketball and baseball doesn't give us many players. They do some but not many. Does anyone know if he is in the building yet?

This is why the program hasn't been able to sustain any success. You think anyone that has played the game has the ability to go out and coach. There are more detailed aspects of teaching football to players than just the fundamentals of the game and an offensive/defensive scheme. If you want to build a successful program you must fully teach the players the game of football.

Go big blue your absolutely right. Teaching the game is alittle different than just being a former player and going out and coaching. Combs is not in te building. He has to finish his contract out at Magoffin County and he will be over there in the summer. He goes over there every weekend and went over there every snow day is what his dad was telling me today. Also believes he may surprise some people after talking with his dad. I sure do wish him luck. He's a wonderful young man that will teach the kids and care about them. Weight program is also going pretty well is what I am told. wosh I could catch some more games but I will be following the cats. I will come for the Corbin game. It will probably get nasty but it's 2 Good coaches and former teammates of breathitt squaring off. Good luck to Combs and Clay.

I can see Clay County winning atleast 5 games or 6. Rowan County, East Jessamine, West Jessamine, Russell County, South Laurel and maybe Rockcastle......jmo. Confusedhh:

Why hasn't Combs requested to be released from his contract at Magoffin? It would have been a much better situation for everyone involved for him to start this spring.

I could see that happening if they get everycall and every questionable bounce of the ball. I think 2-3 is a much safer prediction. A lot of variables would have to go their way to win 5-6.

Sometime the ball bounce right sometime it don't. If clay county can get more basketball player and more hall walker out I think clay can win. That's just me 64SUR. And it start with posters thinking biiiggggg. :insane:
#20
I agree, hallway walkers will have to be out, clay has as many athletic kids as any school around and really should rarely be under .500 in football. Basketball kids simply will never play, a lot of them are scared that Coach Caliperi will interest if they get hurt on the football field, but that has always been an issue in Manchester, hard to change 60 years of history in just a few football seasons, and I think this is a statewide problem for the most part at a lot of schools. With the remaining students though there are still enough kids there to win.
#21
Most of the hallwalkers are walking the halls for a reason, and it ain't because of who the coach is, or what offense is being ran, etc. Most are too sorry to play. Granted there's some that can help, but the majority of them wouldn't last a week if they did come out. The big thing is getting the kids that CAN and WILL play to come out.
#22
Darth from what I understand there was no teaching position available. Super told him he had to stay at Magoffin because he wanted to be with his team this semester but super told him no can do. I guess he didn't want to open a job up. He wanted to wait for a retirement of a high school special Ed teacher. Kinda the same situation that chapman is in at knott. He has to finish his contract out at Perry.
#23
Clay had a special education job open when the football job was available at the end of November. Supers will usually work with you and let you out. I know several coaches that have gotten out of contracts by agreeing to work until there is a replacement to be hired which cuts down on sub costs. If you don't want to be there then your not going to be there and they will let you out. I know I wouldn't want a lame duck working for me.
#24
He tried but the super closed the job. Didn't hire anyone. true. If you don't want to be somewhere then your not gonna work very hard. But I think justin likes teaching as much as he does coaching. Kinda goes hand in hand.
#25
Walter is right, one out of every 3 or 4 boys at most schools ain't worth a dime, gotta be the blind squirrel and find an acorn every once in awhile

You can be a great teacher or a great head coach, i hope Mr. Combs is the latter. If you're both then you better have a good divorce attorney.
#27
^^^Hahaha...true story. I hope the latter also. He is a great guy and I think they will like him over there in clay.
#28
Combs will turn it around if they give him a chance

Last year, Clay County didn't have one teacher in the building. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm going to go on a limb and say that is a recipe for a losing season.

Let's say clay county has 1000 students and half are boys. 500 young men to choose from. Realistically, Clay County should have about 50 or 60 kids playing football. In an ideal world we should have 70.

who all is on Comb's staff?

I know Clay isn't notorious for academic progress but come on man! haha
