Most of the Watkins Started at Raceland. There were many kids I went to school with in elementary and middle school that transferred to Russell. We all get transfers. Now when we start getting 4 or 5 from Columbus or Portsmouth every year that would raise an eyebrow. What happened at Fairview is in the Rearview. I just wish some of their posters on here would admit wrong doing and quit pretending that Kids from Huntington were waking up with the epiphany of transferring to Westwood.

Is like to mention once more that none of this bs was brought up by a Raceland poster. Lets get back on topic. I dodnt get a chance to see many JV games due to our JFL schedule. Who stood out to those that did? What does everyone think of Damon Black vs Nick Caldwell at QB? Those were the only 2 that I saw taking snaps at QB. Thoughts?

Mention it all you want. Sorry your feathers get ruffled so easy. You post on Fairview threads way more than I have ever posted on the Raceland threads....I am gonna be like you with the next sentence...here goes, are you ready?
Now back to the discussion, lets get back on the topic.

Damon throws a nice ball and has a good arm but waits way to late to throw it. That I hope will come with experience though.

Clint, Idc if u post on here or not. These r OPEN forums. Cant stand it whe people gripe about "getting back on ur own thread"...dont like it ...dont read it. JMHO.
I think Nick has the more capable skills right now to be a Starting Varsity QB. But i dont think he is even in the discussion because they like him at reciever it seems. No matter who it is, I dont think we have a pure pocket passer on the roster. All of them are dual threat. Which is what our offense calls for.

I sure are offense could be tweeked for a pocket passer if need be.

Idk if we have one lol. But thats not a bad thing. Our offense is a varIation of the spread/franklin system that lends itself to needing a dual threat QB. If one develops, great. If not, we are fine. The only thing I can say about our offense is we must remain balanced, even when a team can not stop our run. Our passing game got incredibily out of sync towards seasons end. We didnt need in the district games, so we didnt use it . Then when we got into positions that we needed it against Ironton and Williamsburg. I think that had we remained balanced offensively ALL season, we would have been more productive. But its a learning experience, for everyone involved . Players and coaching, even the school and community. We have grown each season since our heartbreaker to LCA in 2008. LCA went on the war path over the next. 3 years, but we were still growing and will continue to do so.

It doesn't matter to me where kids play. The kids that I know that transfer are great kids and most are just looking for a place that fits them. Same reason a kid would go to another for academics and so on. I do like to stir the pot from time to time though. I do know certain kids from Greenup who have received personal phone calls so to watch Raceland and Fairview pointing fingers at each other is humorous. I just sit back with my popcorn and enjoy the show. Lol

Black looked good at QB
Caldwell played excellent at WR and DB, he is also very capable at QB. He made some incredible plays at QB in middle school and usually made good decisions.
Clark done a fine job at WR
Manis made some great plays at DE and is very quick to the QB.
Webb was vey quick at RB
Some very talented kids from last years JV for sure!!
2015 looks very promising!!

We should be good for the next few years. I really hope Black ends up being the man. Simply because it gives us consistency at the position from year to year. With the next few classes coming in, we should have experience year in and year out.

Would also point out that around 40% of Russell kids are also out of district kids.

The open enrollment, that the area's independent schools practice, allows for alot of movement, in and out of school districts. Kids move from one school or another for various reasons. Parents put their kids in the best place they can to succeed, be it academically, atheletically, or both. If atheletics is involved, its up the KHSAA to decide if a player is eligible or not, not the schools. The term "recruiting", imo, is use a little too loosely in these parts. Russell and Raceland, both have kids in their schools, that should probably be going to a different school within the county and until Greenup refused to continue their agreement with both RHS and RWHS, things were fine. It wasnt until Greenup started losing significant student numbers (aka money) to these other county schools, that caused any ruffling of any feathers. There is a big difference in what goes on with Raceland and Russell getting TRANSFERS and recruiting. There are more out of district kids walking the halls of both schools that dont play a single sport, than there are atheletes. And lets be honest, we arent talking 3-5 star kids in most cases. Parents talking to parents and kids talking to kids, imo, doesnt equal recruiting. When tuition, boarding, jobs, or transportation are provided, just to get a student/athelete on your squad are facilitated, that, imo is recruitment. Im not singling any school out, I just think the whole recruiting thing is a little to loosely thrown about these days, especially with schools that are in the same county .

Slightly off topic, I just saw a post on Facebook about Coach Ross needing prayers. Anybody around Raceland know what's going on?

I have been hearing that he has been in poor health for several years now. I know he had a stroke while at Johnson Central.
I haven't ever heard anything about his heart through the years, I have always been told he has had issues with diabeties (sp?). Who knows now, you're much more in the loop than I am.

He is a pretty severe diabetic. He had recovered pretty well from the stroke and had gained some mobility back in what was once a paralized right side. Idk if his issues with his heart were severe or not, i just heard that btw. No verification on any heart attack or nething like that, just hear say. At his age, my money is on diabetese related issues.

Messer transferred after is 6th grade year because his dad was mad after they said he couldn't coach anymore. That 6th grade team traveled the eastern part of the state so he could show off Connor. 23 games and he scheduled 2 in one day. And yet the stud of the team was Bronson.

Wow you sound like a sad mommy on this thread devil backer...

Messer became more of a decoy this season. Imo, his best contribution to the team was just that. Losig Trey Potter early on the season was a bigger blow than anyone may think, notice, or even think about. He was the WR that benefit most from Connor drawing dbl coverage. Another thing Connor did was punt extremely well. Korzep was a phenominal RB as well. Regaurdless of all this...lets try to stay on 2015 if we can.

Are we seriously still taking about this? Give me a flipping break!

Rams lose a few lineman who steps up into those spots.

Thats an area that we will have depth at for a few years. Towards the end of the year Bowling got less snaps on offense to keep him fresh defensively. So Jerome hall got his snaps. We will return everyone except for Bradley at center. Which I expect Caden Townsend to possibly get that job. Logan Mauk will be 2nd on the depth chart and if he has a good offseason and builds his strength he could possibly get it. He has a great mind for the game, buthis physicality and strength need to catch up with that. Our bigger and more important issues lie at QB and WR.
12-17-2014, 03:14 AM
True about the need for a quality QB and WRs. But the skill guys are only as good as the OL helps them to be.
I think Jared Manis will get some reps at DE behind Jamison and Carmen. Have also heard possibly using a 5 man front on D quite often.

I think Manis has tremendous upside. Especially once he grows into his frame. I look for Jerome Hall to be a starter on possibly both sides of the ball next year. Manis should get alot of snaps and I expect caden Townsend, Mauk, Reece Hall, Javon Sanchez, and Justin Fairchild to see time as well. Very deep at the OL and DL.

The starters will be Wallace(Jr), Jerome Hall(Jr), Alex Niece(sr), Caden Townsend(Sr), and whoever ends up at Center. Alex Willet, Jake Dixon, Justin Fairchild, Mauk, and Manis are all under goina be here for the next 2-3 years (some r sophs and some r jrs), so we should have prett good depth on both sides of the LOS. Lets not forget Morgan Carmen and Seth Hobrook, either. Both a very quick and gery strong, but played primarily on the defensive side of the ball last year.
