Final.
What a thriller. Lou. Central has the ball with 3 seconds left, and the Belfry D holds strong.

Finally Belfry is able to hold off Central

Have to give it up to Ray Horton! Hatfield is the well deserved MVP but Horton has to be mentioned

Belfry's defense was amazing.
Horton and Bentley were awesome all day... but Horton needs to have schools begging to talk to him. WOW! The manchild was everywhere!
Austin Hatfield to me finishes alongside of Doug Howard as my favorite Belfry players to watch. What a capstone to his career!
Absolutely nothing but respect for the Central program and players. What an amazing program and Scorggins is a class act. Central returns 8 starters each way and Belfry returns 7. How bout Round 6?

The fact that Horton is just a sophomore blows my mind, he is a very special talent, divison 1 player for sure. Congrats to the Belfry Pirates and Coach Haywood on back to back titles!

Can't say enough about Hatfield...can't say enough about Ray.
But give those lineman some love. Central played the hole game without a safety, bare minimum of ten in the box and sometimes 11. We had a few false starts but all in all if the mules don't come to play we don't win.
Defensively, we were dominate although we definitely gave away some surefire INTs.
It wasn't pretty but I'll gladly take it.
Congrats to ALL the Pirates today! And thanks for getting us over the Central hump.

The playoffs will definitely be exciting with Boyle and LexCath moving to the west and Bell/Corbin coming back to the east.
Can't wait!!

For me it's beating Central, that monkey was getting old and heavy in my opinion.

Congrats to Belfry. This season played out like most probably thought it would. The Pirates got healthy and started to resemble the team that demolished Henry Clay. Haywood completes another chapter of his legendary career. The stars showed up big for Belfry.... Hatfield ran wild, Horton(someone check his birth certificate) looked like Lawrence Taylor, and Keaton Taylor's 80+ yd TD run ended up being the winning score.
irateSho
Congrats also to Central on another great season. Scroggins is pound for pound one of the best coaches in the state. As long as he is at Central, they will always be among the elite.
3A is going to be BRUTAL the next four years!

I'm gonna say beating Central.
The last time anyone won a title at Pikeville Bon Jovi was red hot, Madonna was young, KISS was still on tour, and I was a toddler.
Point being, very few people remember.

Congratulations to Belfry, sounds like this was another classic. I'm not sure there will be a better game the remainder of the weekend.

This game gave me an ulcer and anxiety LOL. Belfry had some mistakes that Central could not capitalize on but overall the Pirates looked great. Belfry has not a single offensive point scored on them in the last 2 state championship games. Defensive wins CHAMPIONSHIPS.

CONGRATS BELFRY!!!! #4 and how sweet it is to beat Central finally to bring home the hardware.
Can't say enough about the offensive line and Mr. Hatfield. On the flip side, Central made the adjustments to start to slow the fullback down in the second half and when Belfry had a penalty that put them just a bit behind the sticks, Central made good on that and bent but didn't break. Great work by both teams. I thought Haywood got a bit tight and was scared to dial up a counter or jet handoff to his wing backs. He kept it very predictable and the Central kids were thus a bit better able to make stops. BUT --- in the end, the conservative route lead to a 4th State Championship and that is what it is all about!
Defensively Horton (and to a lesser extent Bentley) got most of the love from the KHSAA announcers, and it was deserved as they played awesome. Both of them made those roll outs less effective than they would have otherwise been. 13/32 speaks volumes. Sanger also competed hard in there.
You can't say enough about the entire front 7 though. Early on Central thought they could run and they repeatedly red brick walls. Belfry was so stout against the run, they made Central one dimensional and that was impressive.
The secondary covered well. But jeez at least 4 interceptions were dropped. Oh well, we won. Kudos to Edwards for making the BIG hit on the next to last play of the game to jar lose the tying catch.
How close was Woolums FG from being good? Impossible to tell from the angle on the broadcast.
CHAMPS!
