Belfry 33 Russell 0(Class 3A State Semi-Finals)
#1
final

Congratulations on the win Belfry and Good Luck in the State Championship.

Pirates thoroughly dominate a gritty Russell team who played hard.

Belfry simply too strong up front and too fast on Defense.

Pirates join very select company as one of the few teams in KY History to reach 5 consecutive State Finals.

Hats off to Coach Maynard and the Russell staff for not only being class acts, but for an unbelievable season. The Devils are on the fast track back to being a State Title contender and there is no doubt Maynard is only going to make them stronger!

Wouldn't be surprised to see these two meeting again sometime next November and it to be a little closer of a game.

Dominating performance by the Belfry defense.

Russell seniors should be proud of what they have just started.

Congrats Belfry. Lord have mercy, that defense was suffocating. Russell just never got anything going. The Pirates had too much speed and and discipline.
Belfry even had a few penalties to help Russell out but it still wasn't close.

Looks like it will be Belfry vs. Central again.

You guys down on Pond Creek sure can play some football. :notworthy

Congratulation on a Great win now go get the prize and bring it back to EKY. Good luck and safe travels to the pond creek nation

Congrats to Belfry. Good luck to Pirates in BG.

Congrats to the pirates. Russell couldn't get anything on offense. Im surprised that as much as the defense was on the field they didn't drop about 40 plus on Russell. Russell made some good stops at times, one good goal line stand. They kept playing hard though, didn't quit. Just no offensive help. Very proud of this bunch. No one expected them to go this far. TJ has them on the right track. Good job Devils.

No reason for any Russell fan, player, or coach to hang their heads after this one. You lost to the better football team, it happens. For Russell to return to this stage is huge for the program in just Maynard's first year.

Belfry absolutely dominated from start to finish. Defense was suffocating and wasnt allowing much at all. Ray Horton continued to make some noise in the offensive back field from his DT position and made some big plays. Pass defense came up big with 2 interceptions and one was to kill a Russell drive into belfry territory. Austin Hatfield. Is there anything else to say. The best full back in the state. He carried multiple guys, multiple times and Russell could not stop him and again had over 100 yards rushing. Keaton Taylor runs the ball very well from the QB position and runs the offense really well. The offense and defense both are healthy. Can't wait till next Friday. Great effort Russell and a Great season.

104 yards well earned for Hatfield. I thought Russell did a good job of limiting him but he kept getting chunks of yardage.
#14
Congrats Belfry!!

Sounded like Russell played hard to the end. Belfry's just too much. Overall, I'm very proud of these young men. The Russell faithful have to keep in mind that this was just year one under T.J. Maynard. This year was one hell of a starting point. The most wins since '07, and the deepest postseason run since '06. Imagine how much better they'll be after another offseason of running, lifting, and gaining a more firm grasp of this offense. The Devils far surpassed my expectations this year. I can hardly wait till next season.:devilflam

The future def looks bright in Russell. I'm sure these two teams will meet again sometime next year.
#17
Good job Belfry! Win State

Russell flat got their butts beet. Belfry and Mr. Hatfield are everything and more. Great football team and I wish you nothing but the best. I sure nhope you can beat Central.

Russell had a great year. No one expected them to go this far. Wonderful season.

Only good team Russell played in the playoffs = smack down.
Russell had easiest road to semis of any team in state.
#20
I've seen better backs than Belfry. Better QBs and even receivers. But that O Line and D Line were very impressive. They just about walked thru our line. We gave 110% but sometimes even 120% isn't good enough. Hats off to Belfry and good luck at state. Never did like those inner city schools. Lol

All class, brother! I agree with your sentiment too. We play as a team well. You won't find a lot of option QBs like Keaton, he's probably the fastest kid on the team and incredibly agile.

Agree....very sound team. Few (if any) weak links.

Don't know if it would have made much difference, but Belfreys D line was so aggressive, I felt going under center with quick hitters may have worked some. This worked on a series in the Ironton game. Russell drove down the field getting nice chunks of yards. then when they got close to the red zone the went back to shotgun and the drive stalled. You just cant let a team like Belfry get any kind of push into the backfield to disrupt slow developing plays. But to use Haywoods quote of the 06 game, I don't know if they would have scored if they played for a week.

Question for Belfy fans.... How did Russell's defense look compared to other Pirate opponents this year? It seemed like they limited the big plays aside from the TD pass and the long run that was called back.
#26
Great season for Russell. Maynard certainly made the superintendent look good with his decision to move on from Mcglone. Bright days ahead for the Russell program. They're just not on Belfry's level just yet.

Better than most. A lot of teams take the Pikeville model of cutting the linemen to clog the middle then pushing hard from the outside edges. The positive with this style is if you can execute it to perfection you create stops and turnovers, but the drawback is if one person misses an assignment or tackle Belfry is off to the races.

Russell did a good job of keeping everything in front of them and Russell's LB's and S's did a great job of making tackles at the 2nd level. The problem is Belfry is very adept at scoring on long drives as they are on the home run and the Pirates simply took what Russell gave them.

They were well prepared...Belfry simply was "too" strong at everything. Too Much Size. Too many weapons. Too good of Fullback. Too good of defense. Too much team speed.

It's pretty clear another matchup will come between these two either next year of the year after. Russell has to continue to develop speed and athleticism, limit two way players, and develop a deep passing threat. I think the Devils are in good hands capable of doing just that.

Belfry might be 3A state champs this year. But Pikeville is county champs. 29-20!!!!

Good grief, go hang a banner. Im sure Belfry isn't too concerned with that loss right now. You guys need to concentrate on beating someone when it matters. It seems like the regular season is what counts for Pikeville.
