Joker vs Stoops ? Matt Jones of KSR is Stupid
#1
Monday Matt Jones verbally attacked a caller because the Caller asked a simple question, that question was..... "Is Mark Stoops a better Football coach that Joker Phillips? Lots of people would quickly assume that Mark Stoops is a better football coach than Joker Phillips was but taking a deeper looks at things it seems Joker's teams were actually more competitive. After 2 season's as head coach Joker was 1-1 VS UL and 6-10 in the SEC, Mark Stoops on the other hand is likely 0-2 VS UL and 2-14 in the SEC. Matt Jones tried to make the point that Joker had more talent than Stoops but clearly Stoops with 15 four stars player compared to only 2 four star players for Joker has a huge talent advantage! I am not forgetting that Joker had Randle Cobb his first year as Head coach but Stoops has a much larger and deeper skill position talent base! Add in the fact that Stoops best offensive player Pat Towles was red shirted last year and nearly forced out of the program! My Point is the big Mark Stoops Kentucky football dream is just that a Pipe Dream by the time Stoops learns to be a coach in the SEC he will have lost way to many games and way too much time will have passed between Bowls games for him to survive as head coach!

Matt Jones is a liberal douche bag.

The only thing he does well is piss off Lville fans.

I hate Matt Jones, but I have to agree with him here. Joker took over a program in better shape than when Stoops came in. By the way Joker was 4-12 in his first 2 seasons in the SEC not 6-10. Stoops has done a great job recruiting with 13 four star recruits, but it shouldn't be hard to understand that college football is very different than basketball. It is very difficult for 18-19 year olds to compete with 21-22 year old seniors that are key contributors on big time teams.

Glad you've already given up but I'm willing to see if his players develop over time. Not just come in and perform a miracle at once.

But feel free to make up more statistics and exaggerate records to stress your point some more.

Couple other things. Joker had more than 2 four star recruits, and his win over UL was in Strong's first year when he went 7-6, and 3-4 in the Big East.

You are right Joker was 4-12 in the SEC but that's still double Stoop's number of SEC wins. I was not making up statistics I just made a honest mistake. Yes I feel the Marks Stoops hire was a mistake. The last 2 games prove it! Joker never had a team give up 60 point let alone follow it up by giving up 50 to a BAD UT team! Kentucky should of hired a coach similar to rich Brooks with head coaching experience!

Name Joker's 4 star recruits then! A win over UL no matter what year is a good WIN! IMO Stoops has had better luck with injuries than Joker did. IMO Stoops does a poor job preparing his teams he fails to develop smart game plans and his Offensive System is a poor compliment to what he is trying to do on D.

So 2 games proves it and that's it? Seems simple enough. UT isn't as bad as people are making them out to be. Should we have given up 50? No way but they're not as pitiful as people make them out to be. We'd have a new coach every season if they're judged on just a couple games. We go through this again next year I might jump on board with ya, but it takes time to build in this conference. (See Miss. state)

Even Nick Saban finished his first season at Bama 6-6. Takes time in college football.

He brought in 3 of his own between 2010-2012, inherited 3 from the 2009 class in his first year, and had 3 others combined from the 07-08 class that made it to him in 2010 (first year)

I like beating UL too, but the win over them in 2010 with a first year coach after they went 4-8 isn't THAT good of a win.

I'm done here. Not saying he is good or bad, but I'll give him another 2 years to,see what HIS players actually do after some experience.

As a common fan I have no impact on who the coach is. I am a Kentucky fan and I hope Stoops turns into Bear Bryant! I honestly doubt that he is a better coach than Joker Phillips was though. I honestly think its funny how Stoops received a raise with results worse than Jokers. I figure after 3 years Stoops will have roughly the same record as Joker did!

I understand your opinion. We at least have in common that we want UK Football to be relevant.

I think stoops deserves two more years and three at the most. If he can compete in the sec in three years than he need to go. I don't feel sorry for anyone who makes millions coaching. Either get it done or we will pay someone else.
#13
Joker at UK - 13-24 (0.351)

Stoops at UK - 7-15 (0.318)

But I agree Stoops needs 1 or 2 more years... Gave Joker 3..

Joker took over a program in reasonably good condition and was given only 3 years. Stoops by contrast took over the program in poor condition, therefore IMO deserves at least that 4th year to prove he can get Ky competitive in the SEC. Unfortunately it looks like it is going to be at least 4 years before Stoops accomplishes this and it is not looking good IMO. With what they have coming back next year and a few good recruits outside of the Vandy game I see no SEC wins and not sure about Vandy? I do believe that the question about who is a better coach is a fair question and also believe that Matt Jones is a bigtime asshole! Bottom line, after painfully watching 4 of the past 5 games I am not sure this program is headed in the right direction... Do not block or tackle well and our special teams are horrendous among a few of the glaring weaknesses...............................

The jury is still out I think

This is exactly what I said would happen during the hiring process. He would not get the time to turn the thing around before they would start calling for his head. That Idiot we have for a A. D. is not helping him out any by giving him raises for such sorry results. When you start giving raises people want to see some results.

I am not a fan of Joker but I am a fan of the truth! The media wants us all to believe that Joker left the program with no decent players. The truth is Joker left the program with 2 projected first round Drafts picks in Pat Towles and Bud Dupree. Add a NFL starting inside linebacker in Avery Williams. About 15 or 16 of the current starters on Stoops' teams are Joker recruits! I have to wonder how good Pat Towles would be by now if Stoops and his staff had started him last year! Towles had to hire his own coach to improve his throwing motion.

Towles is not projected anywhere near the first round, after the way he has played in 4 of the past 5 games his stock has dropped dramatically. He has a lot of work to do to get drafted at all IMO.

For those that suggest that UK should have hired someone like Rich Brooks, have you forgotten that nearly every fan in the Commonwealth was calling for Rich Brooks head after his FIRST 2 SEASONS? ..................He was too old they said.

Very true. I couldn't believe he wasn't fired. Keeping him ended up being a good decision.

After the Mississippi St game Pat Towles was projected as a 1st Round Draft pick by Phil Steel.

Brooks was dealing with scholarship reductions and probation he deserved more time. IMO the heat will come down on Stoops sooner or later because the guy is not a good coach!

Stoops desperately needs to win at Lville to get some support back and get to a bowl game.

There is no way Stoops can come up with a game plan to beat Lville. The only games Stoops has won at UK are games he had way more talent than the other team, the South Carolina game being the exception. Neal Brown is the coach that figured out how to beat SC. IMO it will be 5 or 6 year before Stoops is a SEC level coach.

Joker is not the coach that Stoops is.

Stoops is a way better recruiter and he has a fire about him. Joker was laid back and his recruiting efforts where embarrassing. We're recruiting on the regular against the likes of Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan State, Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee, WVU, South Carolina, VaTech, etc. Under Joker we recruited against Arkansas State, Troy, Kent State, Akron, Ohio, Middle Tenn St. etc. That wasn't cutting it. Sure you where going to find some diamonds in the rough every now again (Randall Cobb, Avery Williamson, Danny Trevathan) but you weren't every going to actually compete with SEC teams week in and week out.

I think you have to give Stoops at least 4 more years. Guys have to be redshirted and you've got to have veterans before you can compete every week, instead of every other week. Plus getting Joker's players replaced with Stoops guys is a good thing too.

This bye week is what they really needed. Look at the teams we've beaten this year. They all were either completely outmatched talent wise or they had really bad defenses. Once the schedule got a little tougher our guys have gotten physically and mentally beaten down. And if you don't think Tennessee isn't a good team then you're crazy! They have been in every game they've played this year, except maybe Oregon. Mizzou has arguably the best defense in the SEC. Just about no one can win at night in Baton Rouge and Georgia is freaking really good, outside of a few hiccups, which is expected under Richt.

Just think our football fans need to trust Stoops and be as loyal as you possibly can. Showing up and selling out Commonwealth means a lot. Football tickets aren't very expensive and they're easy to get.

I know you are a loyal and good little Kentucky fan and the big name Stoops has really got you really fired up but I have seen this crap all before. Stoops = Curry, YES Bill Curry,,, Curry made himself a big name coaching at a power house program but coaching Football at Kentucky will separate the wheat from the chaff! Curry didn't do much as Head Coach at Kentucky, its a lot easier at Bama! I figure Stoops will get 5 or 6 years at Kentucky but I don't expect him to win much. Kentucky needs a James Franklin type coach! Recruiting alone will not get it done in the SEC!

I don't think I've ever read such a stupid thread. Most of you are completely clueless on how to run a college football program. This isn't the basketball program. We don't have the luxury of bringing in the best of the best. Mark Stoops is as good is it will EVER get at Kentucky. Bear Bryant isn't coming back. Pete Carrol isn't coming to Kentucky. Nick Saban isn't coming to Kentucky. Urban Meyer isn't coming to Kentucky. Bo Pelini isn't coming to Kenucky. Frank Beamer isn't coming to Kentucky. Accept the fact somebody is working hard at trying to improve the image of football in the Commonwealth.

Matt Jones does have some ideas that are just a little bit to far left for me to get ahold of...

I enjoy his show and his website.

But that doesn't mean that I agree with everything on KSR.

Being a season ticket holder since the 2007 season.... I have set through some terrible games at Commonwealth.
The tail end of the Brooks era was fun... the 2007 season was one of the best Fall seasons of my life.
The Joker era was miserable.... the 2011 WKU loss just about made me give up my tickets and forget that UK had a football team.
But the last two years under Stoops have been awesome. Stoops took over a program that was in terrible shape.

As far as the "better coach" question goes..... too early to tell.
