Firts SV footbal game I been to in a while. Glad I did. Valley made big plays when they needed to. And give them boys credit for stepping up with 3 and a half players out and injured into the second half.

First off, I want to say I hope nothing serious is wrong with Andrew Newsome from Valley! Took a low shot to the knee when he went for a reception.

Second off, that pick 6 was an unbelievable play by #52. Huge momentum swift for the Wildcats! Those boys never gave up no matter what circumstances were thrown their way. This was an unbelievable high school football game.

Congrats to Valley and also congrats to Prestonsburg on a great season and to those seniors on a great career.

I guess P-Burg got "out coached" when they threw that 42 yard pass to set-up the 2nd T.D. You guys crack me up. Why not give credit to Valley for hanging tough and winning in the end instead of making excuses for why P-Burg lost?

Congratulations to the wildcats. I agree with an earlier post, Prestonsburg seemed like the better team tonight but Shelby Valley did what they had to in order to win. The Frasure kid was averaging 9 yards a carry. I'm glad Pburg didn't run him more. Shelby Valley's defense played well just like they have all year. Unbelievable season, keep it going!

But IMO, play calling was iffy for both teams. Valley threw the ball wayyyy more than I expected and P-Burg didn't rode their horse when it was crunch time. But that's just an opinion from a bystander that has nothing involved with either team. Prior games may have had something as to why these coaches called the game the way they did.

Just got back from this game, and all I got to say is... WOW!

I am still in shock that Shelby Valley was able to win this. In the regular season game between the two, it seemed like SV was the better team that night, but Prestonsburg got the victory. Just the opposite tonight, P-Burg seemed like the better team, but Valley was able to pull it out in the end. Even though there were a couple of occasions in the 4th quarter when it seemed like the Blackcats were about to put the game on ice, SV just wouldn't die.

This wasn't as much a game Valley won as it kept its head above water and didn't make a critical error. The two INT by Valley came on long pass attempts in the 1st half. P-burg didn't capitalize.

P-burg had 3 big chances to put this one away in the second half. In one Frasure fumbled while fighting for yardage 12 yds past the LOS with 3 tacklers draped over him. The other two ended on rare mental errors by Jarrell - trying to throw while in a tackler's grasp (the big INT return for a TD) and the other INT on 3rd down with <1 min. left trying to force something not there.

Only the coaching staff knows why a pass was called leading to the pick-6... Frasure had been running like a train. The man in the booth must have missed that the Valley weakside LB was crashing every play, because the playcall left Jarrell a sitting duck. Jarod should have eaten the ball, but tried to make the throw. The Valley DB did a good job sticking with his blockers on the INT return.

The playcalling was also a bit too cute in OT. Don't KNOW what the 3rd down call was supposed to be, but it certainly blew up. We should have kicked the FG on 4th and goal from the 7 - going for it there simply isn't smart football, especially considering the way P-burg's defense had kept Valley's offense controlled all night.

Emotions boiled over during the end of Valley's initial play in OT as a P-burg player played past the whistle. It was only a 2 yd. penalty, but big yards inside the 5. From there - the 2yd line on 2nd down - there isn't a defense in the state that could have stopped Valley from scoring.

Sometimes it's HARD being a football fan. Tonight was a good example for a P-burg fan. Valley did just enough to win - and an OT win counts just as much as a 30 point shellacking this time of year.

Hope Valley puts it on NewCath next week !!!

If someone had said Frasure would have over 200 yards rushing tonight, but Prestonsburg would lose, i would have said call the nut house to pick this guy up. Prestonsburg had their chances to put this game away on several occasions. Shelby Valley would not allow that. Valley is a very good team that made big plays at crucial moments tonight to gut out the victory.

Congrats Shelby Valley on the win. I will probably come out next Friday and cheer you boys on against NCC. Kick some ass the rest of the way boys. I will be cheering you on all the way.

I agree with this completely. Valley only completed one pass that I can remember all night (the one where Newsome injured his knee). Yet they were intercepted twice on deep balls and had numerous incompletions. They inexplicably attempted to pass on the first 2-pt conversion even though they have been excellent recently at running them in. And they attempted a deep throw into the end zone on 4th down, when all they needed was 5 yards for the 1st down. Seemed like every time Valley would get some momentum on offense, they would attempt a pass and the drive would end up stalling out.

But Prestonsburg also passed a little too much. They did have some success passing in the first half, most notably on that deep ball to convert a 4th and long on their first scoring drive. So they were having some success through the air early. But in the second half, Valley was having all sorts of trouble slowing down Frasure, yet P-Burg inexplicably went to the air several times, leading to a couple INT's (one that was returned for a TD).

Both sides seemed to go away from their bread and butter at some odd times.

This was a game for the ages, and it will certainly go down as the biggest football game in SV's history. I am sure glad I was there to see it.

I tell ya, I thought sure P-Burg had it in the bag when they were driving deep in Valley territory, with an 8-point lead and only about 7 minutes left. Frasure had been running through Valley's defense like a man possessed. Things sure looked bleak at that point. But then...

Holy crap, the play of the year. That pick 6 was something to behold. I watched it happen right in front of the home stands, and I never imagined he would take it all the way. He wasn't exactly a speed burner, and I thought sure someone would get him. But he broke a couple tackles, got a couple key blocks, and the next thing you know he's past everybody with nothing but open turf in front of him. It seemed to take forever to make it all the way down the field, and thank goodness he had an escort to protect him at the end, but he made it. The kind of play that young man will tell his grandkids about some day.

After that, it still seemed like Prestonsburg was able to move the ball fairly well, and to be honest I was just praying for overtime. Once SV won the toss, I figured P-Burg would score first and kick the XP, then Valley would score also and it would come down to the 2-pt conversion. Once the Wildcats held on defense, I was fairly confident SV could get 10 yards in 4 plays.

Great game, congrats to both teams again!

Prestonsburg loses 11 to graduation. Of these, 9 had substantial playing time though 2 were lost earlier in the year to season-ending injuries.

Biggest losses: Jarred Jarrell, Thomas Spears, Sean White, Quentin Click, Chase Ousley, Jackson Reed, and Steven Perry.

Important returnees: Dalton Frasure, Chatlin Jarrell, Bailey McCoy, Drake Nunnery, Jordan Ray, Paul Stanley, and Tate Green.

The biggest challenges next year lie at QB and re-tooling the trenches.

Wow! Congrats Valley! I really thought Prestonsburg would pull this one out. Playoffs are all about one thing, survive and advance. Coach Ratliff does deserve to be in the discussion if not the front runner for coach of the year. Big time win against a big time opponent.

I realize there has been a few heated posts regarding the losing team being "out-coached," and even though I was at another game, I can say the coach should always receive the full weight and responsibility of a loss. Regardless, if were talking about fundamentals, game plans, penalties, mental mistakes, and even execution, it all falls onto the head coach to make sure these variables, that will win or lose a game for you, are covered and gone over thoroughly. If your a head coach and a team comes out and wins convincingly, it is because you made sure all of those things were covered before the game. In the professional atmosphere it may be a tad more on the players. However, a head coach sets a designed program and identity they want players to "buy-in" to from little league on up. That includes, fundamentals, game plans, mental game, and everything else involved, and that "program/identity" is what will carry you to success or failure. To say that you lost a game because of something a teenage boy did or didn't do is completely unethical in coaching standards. Like I said, you're responsible for teenage boys, and the grown men surrounding them should always take responsibility. Great coaches always have their players celebrate and put them out in front of big wins. Great coaches also ALWAYS takes responsibility and will be out in front of all losses. Sometimes you'll come across coaches with tremendous egoes and that may not be the case, but Any great coach throughout history will tell you the same thing.
