The assumption was that Couch would be coming with Whitaker to Corbin. However, it didn't play out like that and Mike's time here was short lived.

Whitaker left Corbin for South Lakes HS in Central Florida. He then went to EKU to be an assistant, Christian Co, Powell Co, Letcher Central, and now Webster. The EKU and Christian Co jobs may be flipped. I may have left a stop out but that's all I can think of.
As for the movie, it was filmed in the spring of 2013. The movie is loosely based on Travis' life. Obviously, for movie purposes, there is a lot of dramatization and they don't hide that fact but it is a truly remarkable story.
2002 Corbin graduate and former WR Bram Hoover plays the late Jerry Baker in the movie as well.

Corbin was 7-5,7-5 ,6-6 and 6-5 from 1995 thru 1998 the golden years had faded and they were looking for a coach. Whitaker had went 37-12 at Leslie County and with Couch had become a high profile Coach. Corbin was getting a new coach no matter whom it may have been!
Their is no facts in assuming!

You're impossible to get along with. I didn't take a dig at Coach Whitaker or try to imply he hurt Corbin Football in any way. I simply responded to a post about him coaching Couch. I didnt say I had a problem with Whitaker being hired. I just stated the FACT that there was some excitement from many fans, because it had been rumored that Couch might come with him....

I posted that last night but my post must not have taken. Computer seemed to be taking longer to load the pages yesterday and I may have clicked off of it to quick.
That was definitely the reason.

The old saying was that "We'll buy your house but you must bring your own Couch".
I'm pretty sure that Tim was set to come to Corbin but after mulling it over at the last minute, elected to stay at Leslie due to him already having the recognition and it being a tight knit community.
The year after Tim graduated, his #1 target and best friend Ric Hensley came to Corbin on the 10-0 team that should have ran away with the 1996 State title.

Mike played at Leslie when I Coached at Leslie. Mike Coached Tim Couch as a Fr. at Leslie Co.. He Left Corbin and went to Florida Coached at a large High School in Florida, Came back and Coached at EKU a year or so and took the Christian Co. Job He was quite successful there, took the Powell Co. Job and took them into play-offs. Went to Letcher Central. Montgomery County as an Asst. Coach and now at Webster Co. Good Luck Mike.

Injuries decimated that team come playoff time.

Finally got a chance to watch this movie. Movie was pretty solid and of course hollywood has to take its liberties to fit several years of a young mans life into one film but was really cool to watch even if not 100% accurate.
For those interested in the more accurate story above is the dateline special about Travis
