If they are having conversations in front of him its probably more along the lines of, "Whose the crazy parent with his shirt off with "Mayfield Rocks" written on his chest, and why is he in our locker room?" Haha

Okay. The point is, I feel this could be one of our better defenses in many years. The stats indicate such. The points scored indicate such and we have confirmed that apparently the coaches have said more than you have knowledge of.

I'm not sure you understand what "confirmed" means? Haha! Just you saying it doesn't make it confirmed, its just you saying it.

It's nice to start threads about our team and while this team and defense has great potential, you're going over the top with statements and stats, that may or may not mean anything when this team has done nothing to this point.
10-08-2014, 04:14 AM
To this point they have performed well enough to be in the top 4 since 2002. I don't understand how that is going over the top. It is based upon the work load put before this bunch compared to the past. Now, we have a really good test coming up on the 31st, that will make a big change in the stats. I still feel as though we will come out of this ahead of last years defense and looking pretty good. I understand your point but I do not agree with you. The question was how good are they. I feel they are better than last year and brought stats to proof it. You disagree and so far have brought just your opinion.

This is a young defense that has learned from players that have graduated and coaches who believe in them. For them to be doing this well, as young as they are, is impressive. The players that get on the field on defense only, know that this will be their claim to fame and have embraced it. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing this group get better as this season continues.
10-08-2014, 05:36 AM
Most of them have 2 more years to improve. The jv defense is solid as well. We have a bunch of young kids coming up that will help to improve upon it. I'm really a defensive minded person and maybe that is why I am getting so excited about this. When I used to coach, I had a statistician that followed me along the sidelines with a clipboard. I had him note every negative yardage play. I would set a goal each week and the kids would work their tales off to beat the goal. These kids remind me of that mentality.

Looks pretty solid. I just don't think hazard should be that far down. It's not because I'm a hazard fan I just feel there better than 10th.

But Mayfield has a solid defense but I do think this is the year to get them. I am not just talking about in the title game but in the playoffs.
10-08-2014, 08:02 AM
I agree. I think Hazard is way too low. I can see your point about this being the year. I have said this for the past 3 years. I just wasn't counting on them coming around like they have. They still look too tough to be too worried about that.
10-08-2014, 10:37 AM
How has Mayfield been at stopping the run this year.
10-08-2014, 12:13 PM
I have great respect for Mayfield, it will be difficult for any one to beat them but I shure hope we get the opportunity to have A go at it, I believe Class A football is much better up and down than last year,

we'll find out who has the best defense in the playoffs.

Can we all expect you to take a leave of absence from Bluegrass Rivals after somebody from the East beats them? Of course, they have to make it there first? That's definitely not guaranteed.
10-08-2014, 05:10 PM
Nothing is guaranteed. I believe I have said this many times this year in several threads. Beechwood and Frankfort are tough this year. Holy Cross is better than they have been since 2010. Russellville isn't far behind what they were last year. Then you have whoever comes out of the east. But, once again don't go counting your chickens that they are gonna win it either.

Bac, the run defense is the strength of the team. They have really shown good things at stopping the run. Graves has a d1 recruit at rb and a very large line to run behind. He had been averaging over 200 yards rushing until they played. The Mayfield defense held him to under 100. The team as a whole just got a little over 100 total yards.

No one will know until the third round of the playoffs.

mysonis55 lost all credibility with me when he posted an arrogant thread on the middle school football forum a couple weeks into the season last year self-proclaiming the Mayfield Cardinals the 2013 state champions when they never even entered the KYMSFA playoffs. I try to overlook about 99% of the junk he spews now. This comment is part of that 1% left over. Dude likes to toot his own horn a lot. I'm not into that and I'm surprised a lot of you are.

So I am terribly wrong because the administration wouldn't let the boys play in the tourney last year. That makes real sense. Just remember the bunch are now freshmen. Let's see what happens with them in 2-3 years from now. They are very solid. I even offered to help fund raise and to donate myself. I just could not get them to let the boys play. This tourney is during fall break and the staff doesn't like giving their time off for a middle school tourney. I've been told their philosophy is that they are not concerned with state titles in middle school or jv. They want them at the varsity level. Last year they didn't even let our jv play in the tourney either. I think they probably will do the same this year.

I have done some research after the game last night to update things. Everyone seems to keep hanging their hats on our schedule being so much worse than last year and that being the reason for our defense looking better. That thought seems to prevail so after hearing that, I thought maybe this is so. I did the research though and it definately isn't. Here is what I came up with.
2013 schedule to this point in the year
Fort Campbell. 3-5
McCracken Co 6-2
Paducah-Tilghman 3-5
Murray 4-4
Graves Co 6-2
Marshall Co 1-7
Fulton 1-6
Fulton Co 1-6
Combined opp total record 25-37
2014
Fort Campbell 2-6
McCracken Co 7-1
Paducah-Tilghman 3-5
Murray 5-3
Graves Co 5-3
Marshall Co 2-6
Fulton 0-7
Fulton Co 1-6
Combined opp record 25-37
Now the score to this point.

2014) 332-76

We will find out a lot about this defense in 2 weeks. We will find out a lot about the offense as well. Caldwell defense isn't the cakewalk most everyone thought they were, but at the same time there offense ain't what some thought. If they score 35 I wouldn't say our defense is that great. If we give up over that I think Caldwell wins. There defense isn't bad especially there run defense. They did a better job against Murray than may field did. Hopefully 55 is on to something and there is more offense than has been shown, cause the offense I've seen won't move the ball well against Caldwell.

This thread started out how good is this young mayfield defense.....Well how young is the starter freshman, sophomore, junior or just talking smack...

Wouldn't you like to know 64. The line backing core is what really makes the defense so much younger than usual. There are 2 sophomores starting, and a freshman that gets a lot of playing time.
