Southwestern 27 North Laurel 26
#1
Great game!

Southwestern playing without Jordan Doan wins a back and forth battle.

North Laurel scores on the very last play of regulation. They opt to go for 2 instead of the tie... they come up short.

Huge win for Coach French and the Warriors.

Wow! Sounded like a check of a game.

It surely was that. Larkey will get second guessed for going for two (you always do when a gamble fails), because North's kicker is really good, but after time to think about it, I am totally with him. You just scored on the last play of regulation, you have the opponent on tilt, and you are on the road. The hell with it, go for the win. Extra points aren't guaranteed in high school, no matter how good your kicker is. Too many other things can go wrong.

I agree.

Playing with house money. Go for the win!

I would have agreed with that if he'd have ran the offense straight out there instead of calling the time out and letting SW rally the troops. Once he did that they had time to focus. If you kick the extra point after the time out they'd still be on their heels in overtime. I'd have tried to draw them offsides and if that didn't work kick the ball. Great game.

That's a great point and the one thing that did bother me a little. I would hope that most high school teams have a go-to play they work on that they pretty much know they will be running in just such a situation. But with the score coming on the last play of the game, I felt like Larkey was put in the spot of having to call a timeout just to calm everybody down, and not get a delay of game penalty. But you are on the money in saying that probàbly worked in Soutwestern's favor. Still a really good high school game.

Game of the night material.

I know I saw this one on khsaa website listing N Laurel as the winner.

Why are they playing without Doan? Is he hurt or left the team?

Circumstances beyond football has brought him back to Somerset HS.

Another one that I picked, I am telling you this North Laurel team is not going to go quietly.
#13
Going for it, right decision! Timeout, NOT!!!. Great game, may see rematch in playoffs!
#14
Good game right up to the end. You didn't know who was going to win this one. NL came up on the short end on some controversial calls that looking at the film one of my friends got of the game last night I just saw, the Refs flat missed 2 key calls that really hurt NL. Too bad! You all get some re-plays of this one you will see what I mean.
#15
Right decision.
#16
North can't keep running the ball up the middle
#17
2 sleepers right there. Both will make some noise.
#18
True. All the successful teams anymore are mounting aerial attacks even the mountain teams. You get the number on these run it up the middle teams really quick in a game, doesn't take but a play or two. Most teams can stop that attack pretty quick.
#19
Spread the field out, then run the ball. Simple success

Belfry doesn't spread it out and does pretty good

Whitley and Perry Cent spread it out and I think have a combined 2 wins. I think most coaches have to adjust their team to what they have and what the players can do. Not every team has a passing qb or a group of wrs or even a line that can block good. Easy to tell someone to throw but when the qb can't then what. Don't say work on it because they can either do it at this point if they can't.
#21
True, you have to go with the personnel you have. Some kids just can't throw a football, you nailed it you either can or you can't.
#22
That was a backwards pass that north picked up should have a easy touch down for north but the ref said it was a incomplete pass he must have been asleep
#23
Southwestern radio guys even said refs blew that one. Larkey's coaching background is obviously run oriented, but I do think they will throw it more the next 3 years. Personnel matters, and McWhorter, their freshman qb who will take over next year, throws it well.
#24
That was what I saw on the film - yup, Ref definitely blew that one, big time! Wish these games could get Refs that knew the rules!
#25
Is that their 8th grade QB from last year?
#26
Both these teams have to feel they have a shot at Madison Southern after last nights game with SL.

Yes McWhorter was their 8th grade qb last year on what was their best middle school team ever. He and several of the other freshmen are contributing this year, although he has played mainly defense at the varsity level. Probably good to give him a year of freshman and jv work firdt, should be good to go next year.

I saw them play one game last season & thought that kid was good, the game I saw he sure had the ability to buy time for his receivers by going the right pattern to avoiding tacklers. There could be some exciting years coming up for North Laurel football fans for sure, building on that 8th grade team with what they will have to go along with it. I was hoping that was who it was, you never know the way some of these kids move around any more who is playing where til you ask. Thanks.

I think Chris Larkey showed some real guts going for two. Sometimes when you roll the dice you get the snake eyes, but, he gave it a shot. North has played pretty well so far this season from what I've heard. They have been competitive at least in every game. This next game against Pulaski will be the tell on what can be expected from them this season.

You train them.
