Anyways, congrats to Pikeville on a great win...Of course, JP knows that I always wish Pikeville well.
The only reason I put belfry beating JC this year is because the kid(Young) that did all the damage last year against Belfry graduated. Now the Skaggs kid and the Slone kid can both run too. I could be dead wrong, but if Belfry can pack it in I think they'll beat them.
However, im sure Matney was paying attention to how Pikeville's defense did last week too? I think it'll be decided by a touchdown, but then lies the issue, "is JC better than Pikeville?" If they both beat Belfry by a touchdown I think they should force them to play so BGR can get some answers?

Do-double-gg Wrote:A few people said that Belfry was flat, is that true. I think that Pikeville is a threat to go to Bowling Green in 1a, but I just don't understand this game.
Belfry flat wore every team to this point out like a very good 6a Henry Clay.
One would think that a championship caliber 3a team would beat a 1a team even if they are a 1a championship team by at least 2 scores even on a bad night. Has the gap in the Mountain classes started to close some. You got Pikeville beating Belfry and Middlesboro beating Bell and...............what the heck is going on.:insane: Congrats to Pikeville and I think the game of the year in the mountains will be when Pikeville and Williamsburg clash. I don't believe for 1 second that this is the same Belfry team who came into this game undefeated.
There was a time when you would see a final score like this in favor of Pikeville, and it was commonplace. Been a long time , no doubt. During the 70's, 80's, and 90's it was back and forth every year, Pikeville could and did compete with Belfry. During the start of the 2000 decade, Pikeville started slipping. I think 01 was the last year Pikeville was victorious. Now Pikeville is striving to get back to the point to where it can compete with the Belfrys of the world. Both sides enjoyed whooping up on each another. The anticipation and excitement was second to none. As mentioned, during the 2000 era, it lost it's luster(the game). Got a feeling though, it's starting to shine again. Good luck to both teams, and hope to see both in BG.

Having watched replay what continues to stick out to me was that 3rd Quarter.
For anyone wanting to play the "Belfry was flat" card... that 3rd Quarter was the story of the game. Belfry was not flat in the 3rd...in fact they looked like the Belfry team everyone expected. The fact remains Belfry was held scoreless in the 3rd giving Pikeville their best shot.
If anyone wants to make excuses as to why Belfry lost I present that Quarter as evidence that the better team Friday night clearly won. To be honest, Belfry was actually lucky they did not lose by more. Pikeville scored 7 points off Belfry turnovers, but 14 of Belfry's 20 points came as the result of Panther turnovers. In addition, if Pikeville doesn't have a holding call on that first drive in the 4th Quarter...they not only probably avoid an Interception...but they were moving it well enough they probably tag on another score.
Now I am going to give my constructive criticism for Belfry having seen the replay:
- The blocking of the HB's is AWFUL!!!!! For this Belfry offense to work the HB's have to make their blocks and help seal the edge... the effort from the HB's was dismal and missed blocks directly led to about 3 Tackles For Loss.
- Pikeville gave a blueprint to neutralize this Belfry Front 7 everyone was bragging about. Spread the D-Linemen out and cut them down... use misdirection to make the DE's and LB's sit in their tracks trying to read the play. By the time Belfry could get their feet Pikeville had a 3 yard surge or had a quick hitter on the pass... individual effort then gave them bigger yards and conversions. Corners have to get tougher and the LB's and End's have to be more aggressive.
- Passing game as abysmal and non-existent. Belfry has proven you can win without passing, but without the threat of a pass the theory doesn't work. You don't need much to have that... the fear of the quick hitch or a short 10 yard out alone changes the dynamic..right now I don't even have the confidence they can execute that.
- Belfry has played progressively worse each game.
Henry Clay: Total team effort and domination
Harlan County: Total domination, but execution flaws on the option and bad play by the subs
Southwestern: Attrocious penalties negating scores and allowing SW to stay in the game... a lone defensive breakdown.
Pikeville: Well we just saw...
Belfry should have some time to get healthy and work on themselves the next two weeks. Gallia Academy and Sheldon Clark should both be teams Belfry can handle going away. I don't think either game will really tell us anything about Belfry. Someone needs to emerge as a leader...and someone needs to take the HB position as run with it until Catron returns.

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Having watched replay what continues to stick out to me was that 3rd Quarter.I'd have to say this is the most fair analysis I've read. The key is that Pikeville has the athletes and speed to spread the D line of Belfry out, not many teams do. Until Belfry develops a pass threat, the faster and talented upper echelon of 3A will give them fits this year. BUT, if they develop anything resembling a pass threat, their O will return to the dominating force it is meant to be. I expect them to first take out large amounts of frustration on Sheldon Clark next week, then spend the rest of the time trying play actions, possibly splitting Keaton out in the slot with someone more dependable passing (surely in all that depth, someone has an arm?), which would help them run bubble screens, etc. They have the speed with Keaton and Willis to make it work if they can learn to block. But if they want to bring home another title, they will have to do that to beat the Centrals, etc

Imo,your exactly right. After the break, when Belfry came out and was driving the ball down field, I thought to myself....."well, here goes the game". Belfry had new life in the 3rd qtr. Pikeville adjusted, and made the stops. Belfry was not flat, imo. Good and accurate analysis of the game EKUALum05.

Pikeville you all are good really good, you have it all, speed, size, passing game, I have not seen any team in Kentucky doesn't matter what class you guys can't, take down, it is scary to think that you can only get better. I think if we play 1 game at A time, work hard and improve, We may be fortunate enough to get there, if and A big IF, we do get there by playing 1 game at A time we will respect every team, but fear no one.
