Well everyone, we have another great week of 1a games in the Commonwealth this week. We have several teams playing over their heads in other classes and one between top powers in 1a as well. This should be a nice week in 1a and should also help to give everyone a more clear understanding of where teams should stand in 1a. So without further ado, here is your top ten this week:
1) #3 Paducah Tilghman 3a @ #1 Mayfield 1a
This is the 101st meeting of these two traditional powers in Ky football. The series is getting very close to even over the course of those years. You add to this the fact that both teams are looking to see what they have for the future. PT has a new coaching staff, new offensive system and a lot of new starters, due to graduation. Mayfield is also using a lot of new starters due to graduation and has had to replace their offensive coordinator. PT did finish 2013 in the semi finals of 3a with a record of 8-6. Mayfield finished 2013 with another state championship in 1a and a record of 14-1. Mayfield won this matchup last year 28-21 at PT. Both teams also are coming into this one off of close losses. PT has a record of 0-2 and Mayfield is 1-1. This one should be a packed house and it should be rocking at War Memorial.
2) #9 Paintsville 1a @ #7 Pikeville 1a
This should be another great game between 2 of the powers on the east side of 1a and may go a long way in determining who represents the east side. Both of these teams are coming in off of impressive showings in 2013. Paintsville had some injuries coming down the stretch which may have limited them more than who they were facing. Paintsville lost this one last year in a close one by a score of 21-28 at home. Paintsville finished 2013 with an impressive record of 8-4 and proved that they are a contender in 1a. Pikeville finished with an impressive record of 11-2 as well and showed they should not ever be overlooked. The two have gotten off to similar starts this year as well. Paintsville comes in off an impressive win with a record of 1-0. Pikeville comes in off a second come from behind win and showed they can score quickly the old school way, on the ground. They however cannot dig themselves in a hole a third week in a row and expect to come back. This should be a great game and crowd should be in a frenzy.
3) #2 Beechwood 1a @ NR Dixie Heights 6a
This too should be a great one. Beechwood in their typical fashion has scheduled another big school traditionally tough team. This one was won by Dixie last year 41-20 at Beechwood. Beechwood however is a year older and more experienced coming in to this one. Beechwood finished the 2013 season short of where they usually make it at 8-5. Dixie finished with an impressive 8-4 record for a 6a team. Both teams will be looking to right the ship in this game as they both come in at 0-1. This however is a rare game in which the 1a school should have a more experienced team coming in. This two should be an electric atmosphere.
4) NR Lawrence Co 3a @ #12 Fairview 1a
This game here could be easily overlooked by anyone but the more astute football fans. This because of the reason for Fairview's average season last year. It would look like a very impressive season without all of the off the field problems, it would easily have been another great season for the Eagles. Lawrence Co won this one last year 1-0 due to forfeit. This should inspire the Eagles even more this year. Lawrence Co finished 2013 at 8-4. Fairview finished at 5-5 and several of those losses were because of forfeit. Both teams are starting out this season on a great note. Lawrence Co comes in at 2-0. Fairview will enter the matchup at 1-0. This too should be a great atmosphere and would be a game that I would love to see.
5) #11 Pike Co Cent 3a @ #4 Williamsburg 1a
This should be another great game in which a 1a teams has gone out of their class and found a tough team to put on the schedule. Williamsburg won this one last year 48-26. They have almost everything including the kitchen sink back. Pike Co Cent had a good season last year finishing at 7-6. Williamsburg had their best season yet last year finishing as the State Runners Up at 11-3. The two have already started this year in a similar fashion with both coming in at 2-0. Hopefully the Burg will not be wearing orange and standing on the hot sidelines this year. In all seriousness this should be a great game and a great environment.
6) #3 Frankfort 1a @ NR Shelby Co 5a
This is another game in which a contender in 1a has gone above their heads to find a big school team to play in their non district portion of the schedule. This was a great game last year that Frankfort managed to win 27-14, showing that the little schools can play. Frankfort finished 2013 in the semi finals at 11-3 on the year. They had one of the more nasty defenses in all of 1a. Shelby Co finished a winning season in 2013 at 6-5. This should be a great scene as well.
7) #13 Ky Country Day 1a @ #13 Walton-Verona 2a
This game is one that usually goes a long way in shaping these two teams seasons. Both teams are on the cusp of getting good recognition in their perspective classes. W-V won this one last year 33-17 at KCD. KCD went on to a disappointing 5-6 season as a result. W-V finished off 2013 with a good season at 9-3. Both teams come into this one at 1-1 and looking to get their seasons back on track. This should be a fun one to watch.
8) #9 Middlesboro 2a @ NR Pineville 2a
These two teams come into this one with something to prove. Last year Middlesboro was beginning to feel as though they were returning to the top. The came into this one and beat Pineville 42-20 enroute to a great 9-3 season. Pineville still managed to salvage their season and finish with a good 7-5 record. Middlesboro again feels they are right in the mix of things, as does Pineville. Pineville comes in off to a good 1-0 start to the season. This game will go a long way toward making one of these teams seasons go much smoother this year. This one will be a great game as well.
9) NR Butler Co 2a @ #6 Russellville 1a
This game should be another good one. Russellville came into Butler Co last year and destroyed an undefeated Butler Co team 41-0. This year should be different though, due to the talent that the Panthers lost and the fact that the youth of Butler Co has had another year to mature. If you remember 2 years ago Butler Co's 8th grade teams dismantled Raceland in the state championship. Those boys are now Sophomores and should be ready to contribute. Both teams come in undefeated as Butler Co is 1-0 and Russellville is 2-0. This should be a great game in the old school stadium of the Panthers.
10) #5 Hazard 1a @ #17 Letcher Co Cent 5a
This is another one of those situations where a good 1a team has gone above their heads to find a bigger school to play in their nondistrict schedule. Hazard won this one in a close one at Hazard 26-21. Hazard however will be without Dixon at the helm due to ejection from last weeks game. It really affected his team in the game against 1a power Pikeville. Last year Hazard finished their season with another great year at 11-2. Letcher Co Cent finished with a not so good season at 4-7 and this game would go a long way toward correcting that. This year the two come in with somewhat flipped scripts. Hazard enters the contest at 0-1. Letcher Co Cent comes in at 2-0. This should make for an exciting fight it out type of game.
Well there you have it, this is this weeks edition of the top 1a games in the state. What's your thought?

Good stuff as always 55, only thing I would do different is move Pike Central/Williamsburg to #3.

This is a very strong week for Class A games. All of the top ten are good match ups.

I honestly think the Fairview-v-Lawrence County game could be a little lopsided in favor of Lawrence. The Bulldogs have a pretty good 3a team this year. Not saying that Rowan County is a good 4a team because they are not but the talent level of Rowan and Fairview is pretty close and Lawrence blew Rowan out. I would not put much stock in the Fairview win over East Carter because that team is just bad. They got blown out last week by Raceland and they probably wont win a game this year. Fairview will score some points as our defense is improving and looked way better in week two then they did in week one. I am very curious to see how our defense responds to an offense that has a pulse.

How can anyone figure that the burg's game should be higher? They beat this team by a large margin last year. They have almost everyone back. So it should be more of the same.

The burg lost a great QB and Pike Central had a lot of people out last year.
New year, new teams. Not saying the burg won't win, but Pike Central will cause them a lot of problems. If this game was at PC I would pick PC to win. Should be a very good game.

I think this will be a hell of a game.......Pike County Central was better than last year score.....Pike Central play without some of their starter last year due to suspension......Williamsburg better be ready to play.....Go Williamsburg. :Cheerlead

600+ yds against Somerset this year is better info than what happened last year.

This seems to be one of the bad years though. I don't remember them being down at #10 in a long time.
