If the W'burg game was played at Raceland, the outcome would have been a lot different. Three of those linemen had played both sides of the ball all year long, playing in extreme heat, thru cramps in their legs, thru injuries, giving their all to help win a Regional Championship for their school and community. Don't think that feat had ever been accomplished.
These young men still deserve our support and respect, I think they earned that much. And good luck to this years team, I see a bright future for Ram Nation. GO RAMS!!!
If what I posted came across that way, it was not my intent. 13 will be remembered as the team that got us over the hump. But there were a few other squads that were alot more tenacious and played a little more angry. Maybe its the changing of the game over the last decade idk. The 08 team averaged 6'3" 260 on the dline, with everyone of them as tough and quick as Risner. '13 was an outstanding year for the Rams, those seniors really set a predcident for how things should be done in the offseason. i think they laid a foundation of how leadership rolls should be maintained. never settling, never letting up.
I, as well as other Ram Nation members appreciate the kind words. No one should ever forget these boys, from any team. One thing is for sure, win lose or draw, the Raceland/Worthington community will always be in full strength snd supporting the boys. Really lookig foward to the next chapter of Raceland Football.

I think people read these posts and get their panties in a wad because they know a kid or are somehow associated with the team. I did not read anything that Scotty said that was degrading the boys. He simply said the line back in the day was a better one but did not get their chance. We have discussed their lack of aggression at firing off the ball because it was obvious on video. There is nothing to be mad at. It is a teaching point for them to learn from their mistakes. I watched the video of that game against the burg before we played them. It was apparent to me right then that we were going to win big. I said that because of the line play. It may be acceptable in the east for the linemen to stand straight up and put their hands out to catch the defender. But, here in the west I know of at least 4 d lines that will blow right past that and disrupt the play in the backfield.

We really need football to get started. People on here are getting way to testy.

The 08 team was much better than the 13 team. The 08 big, fast, and had a bit of "nasty" to them that the 13 team did not have. The 08 team only played one bad half the entire season and it probably cost them a state championship.

Despite being the first Raceland team to make the semi finals, the 2013 team is probably the 4th best team I saw at Raceland. Behind 2008, 2006, and 1987 teams.

^^^and there lies the difference in the Raceland teams I mentioned. Here's verification. I think you'll enjoy these 55. 2006 we got knocked out by NCC after going up 27-10 their numbers overwhelmed us and conservative play calling put the ball in Lucas Whitt and Co's hands in '08, LCA beat us by a TD and we ended up a first down short of one final shot at the endzone.
2006 Key Players
3 Derrik Beach WR/KR
2 Scott Grizzle QB
5 Benji Mullins WR/DB
10 Scott McKenzie DB
53 Brad Rodgers OL/DL
51 Jack Forrest OL/LB
71 Clinten Thompson OL/DL
2008 Key Players
11 Tyler Boyles QB/DB
20 Brett Denton RB/LB
35 John-Scott Carver RB/LB
63 Robbie Logan OL/DL
75 Sabastien Johanssen OL/DL
51 Rocky Jobe OL/DL
31 Cody Kelly RB/LB
My examples...2006 Raceland Rams are the first link. 200& is the 2nd.
When there's about a minute ten seconds left in the 2nd video, John-Scott Carver absolutley blows a kid up.

What about 95? There were alot of good Raceland teams that got overshadowed due to the 4 class system. The Beechwoods, Bardstown, NCC, Ludlow, Bellevues, teams that were winning consistent state championships every few years from 85-95 were usually seeing us at their place or coming to our place for 4 quarters, on their way to state title games. A few years, we played them as close as any other team in the playoffs. Its a sickening feeling to watch a team beat you by 10 pts then manage to runover everyone else on their way to a state championship.

Cant immagine how Beechwood and Frankfort felt watching Mayfield dismantle Fairview and Williamsburg.

I hate the conservative thing. Lone Oak lost 09 championship because of that mentality.

Are you talking about the team that went 10-0 and got blasted by NCC in the playoffs in the first round? If so, I thought that was 96, Coach Ross' last season. If that is the team you were talking about, I was not too impressed them. I think that undefeated season was a product of a weak schedule.

Sorry I meant Jarons dang spell check.

What year was Salmons(Mike) senior year. Thats the team i am thinking about. Pretty sure that was the team that went to NCC and won, then lost to Bellevue in the 2nd round when Salmons came up short? I was young then and have trouble remembering exactly how everything went down.

Was that the team with the Robinson kid? The one that threw for almost 100 tds and 5,000 yards? Thats absolutely insane. Idc if its a 6A powerhouse vs a descent 1A team week in and week out. Those numbers are absolutely bonkers. When i first read it, i thought for sure it was a typo.

It was 2009. They were beating Boyle Co like a drum at the half. They were built for speed. They slung the ball everywhere. I don't know if Haskins, the coach, was afraid to run the score up or thought he could play stall ball and win or what, but they tried to run it all the second half and the rest is history.
06-28-2014, 06:33 PM
Yes that was the qb. He went on to Troy University and set div 1 records. I think he in NFL now.
06-28-2014, 06:35 PM
By the way the qb I was raving about at McCracken Co all last year, which is a soph, is playing for Haskins now. I have heard that he compares him to the former Lone Oak qb and says he is as good if not better in ways.

robinson wasnt on the 09 team that almost won title. His senior season was 07, thats the year he set those records. They made it undefeated to the title game in 07, then lexington catholic absolutly obliterated them. I agree its still an impresive record, but that lone oak team had a ridicolously weak schedule. They didnt play mayfield, tilghman, graves, or marshall that season, which, would have been the closest 4 descent teams to them. All those schools are within a half hour, but they played a schedule full of heaths, and ballards. Marshall county would have beat lone oak.

I believe the team that went to NCC and won was Coach Vanderhoff's first season was 97, but they lost to Bath Co. when Bath Co was Class A and in Raceland's district. If I remember correctly, Raceland entered the playoffs as a 3 or 4 seed. I haven't lived in the area since I graduated from Raceland in 93 I may be getting things mixed up.

Idc if he played a jv schedule. Per maxpreps he completed 300+/500+, 91 tds, and 4 ints? Thats crazy. He went on to avg 20+ tds and 3500 yds and only throwing 20 ints in his career. 91 tds may stand forever. Proud to say he is a ky boy. But back to the topic at hand...1A football. Here's a question I have, what have the defending champs and runner ups been doing in the offseason, camps, cliniques, etc?

Scotty, that was very good examples. That 06 team was stout. I especially liked how athletic those linemen were. They did not play patty cakes. They knocked your teeth in and went to make a play. Them boys were running with the backs and were never stopping on the play.

We did a lot of hitting the weights but we wont start until 7-15.

:thatsfunn
That was my sr class. Herniated disks and a bad knee kept me from my jr/sr year, but i never stopped loving the game. Those guys were MEAN and atheletic and strong as can be. Alot of the 08 grads credited the 06 guys for what they a complished, from knocking their teet out in practices lol. The Beach kid from this years Raceland squad is Derrik's younger brother. Not quite as fast as Derrik(he ran a 4.4), but was a bit stronger. That team gave New Cath all they wanted for a half, then the 2nd half platooning started and when ur 2nd platoo is as good as ur first AND their fresh, it's hard to compete after going 4 quarters both ways. One of the hardest hitting teams that will ever come out of Raceland. Grizzle is now the Asst OC and QB coach at Raceland and Thompson and Rogers both asst the Dline. Rogers could have, but didnt play college ball. Grizzle played at KCU and Georgetown and Thompson was a 3 year starter for KCU. Proud to call them both friends.

Another thing i have noticed from watching alot of highlight videos today, is backs out running their blocking. Especially on Screens and Sweeps. I know sometimes you have to make it on ur own, but patience in a speed back is seemingly hard to come by. Thats what impressed me about the Murrell brothers, Johnathan Jackson, and Devon Turner of Fairview. The ability to let a play develop without getting brought down, then turnig on the jets once they hit the 2nd level of the defense. Imo Patience and vision are more important than blind speed. Give a blind folded man a race car and a man with 20/20 a bycicke snd see who wins the race.
06-28-2014, 09:15 PM
You are correct. It all has to come together. That was what was good about Stewart Mills of Mayfield and Zach Katsman of Graves Co. They would come up put their hand on their big linemens backs and direct them to the block and then come off at the right time.
06-28-2014, 09:47 PM
Alot of times u see that from timid backs as well. Difference is, when nothing develops they turn and run. A good back just makes their way foward as much as possible. The backs on the 08 team were like. But, they had lineman that could move. The 06 team was more pass oriented. Ran enough to keep the balance. I think the next several Raceland teams will look more like 06. Not a HUGE team. But will be very auick and very strong.
06-28-2014, 11:20 PM
That's the new style that works.
06-29-2014, 01:10 AM
Oldest technique in football that is so often over looked. SHAKE YOUR MAN AND SPEED TO THE FOOTBALL. Gap control defense in the old 5-2 is also rarely coached any more. With a smaller, faster defense, when the DL and LB are both quick is extremely effective. The east has lacked speed upfront, i think its just taken longer for that style of defense to make its way over hear. The east is still a few tds behind the west, but its from a lack of defense, not a lack of offense. If u cant stop someone from scoring, you will not stand a strong chance of winning. Man im why cant football in general just be year round? Id settle for grid-o-rama situation games and nfl preseason ball at this point.
