It's regional week boys and girls... and that got my little brain wondering.....
What is the smallest school/gym to host a regional tournament.
And I don't mean the pre WWII era... (cause I know some of our "history buffs" would be quick to correct me)
Keep in mind.... Gym size, parking, number rest rooms, concession stands... the whole shootin' match.
There's nothing worse than going to a regional game and having to take a taxi from your car the the gym and then having to sit in the lunch room and watch the game on a closed-circuit tv.

My home region... the 15th has some nice sized gyms.
(Yes, I know the boys and girls regionals are now held at the expo center in Pikeville before anybody corrects me)
Gyms that can host a regional.. cause I've been there when they are played
Johnson Central
Allen Central
Pike Co. Central
Prestonsburg
Shelby Valley
Gyms I'm unsure about
Paintsville
Phelps
Betsy Layne
Pikeville
Lawrence Co.
Sheldon Clark
Magoffin Co.
Belfry
East Ridge
South Floyd

All schools in the 15th, outside Piarist, are large enough to host the region tourney.
They wanted to keep it on the US 23 corridor at one time, leading to saying only Johnson Central, Prestonsburg, Pike Central, and Shelby Valley (one from each district) could host. Problem is that parking at Prestonsburg is BEYOND horrible and Johnson Central and Shelby Valley isn't much better.

JC has as much parking as anybody in the 15th.
Between the high school, middle school and the mayo plaza, I would say JC has more parking than the expo center.
Just a side note, JC hosted the 2008 elementary state wrestling meet. At the time, it was the largest tournament in KY. history by the number of bouts and number of entries... it was an insane sight. But the parking never was an issue.

Memorial Gym at Hazard is a great venue for tournament play, but an absolute nightmare for logistics such as parking.

To hear everyone else in the 52nd district talk, it would be last year at Harlan County...even though the gym never reached capacity, folks are still whining about it!!
nicker:
I'm just thankful there was one year (1, uno) that I didn't have to drive 1.5 hrs to sit in the Arena, where you are so removed from the action, it's like watching a big screen TV
Good luck tournament players!!

SV has the largest parking area out of the four mentioned with a large faculty parking lot, a smaller side parking lot, and a huge student parking lot next to the football field.

I think Feds Creek or Phelps would have been the smallest in the 15th to host.

I can remember the Girls 15th Region Tournament held at Elkhorn City and South Floyd back when the Girls/Boys were not played at the same site.
Does anyone remember when the opening round games were played at the home of each district winner? One year experiment back in 05 or 06...horrible!

Girls don't have a very strict policy.
I can remember Jenkins hosting a few years ago.
Leslie is hosting the 14th this year.

If You are counting Mayo Plaza as part of the parking, the you are correct.
Are we talking smallest school or smallest gym?
By the way, the numbers on gym capacity on KHSAA are wildly inaccurate.

I know it was going on in 2003... cause JC had to travel to South Floyd in the 1st round. #Disaster

Actual school population isn't what I'm looking for.

I already answered this one.
No more debating to be done lol
They have to block off the street at Hazard's gym three hours beforehand because the parking lot is full already.

Everyone seems to hate the parking at Memorial Gym, but let's be real it's just bc u have to walk up a hill. It's really not that far of a walk but it's a hill.
The last 3 times I have been to Knott Co to watch a ball game I've had to walk further than I would have to at memorial gym hill. And I don't know how many times I've had to walk from the baseball fields at Perry to watch a game at Perry. Perry's parking lot is long distance than Memorial gym hill.

They still do that in the 6th and 7th. I think the 11th did that a few years ago.

I'm 35 and the smallest gym I can remember being in for a tournament in the 15th Region was Johns Creek, problem is I don't remember if it was for the district or region tourney. It is smaller than Memorial.

Jenkins isn't that bad of a gym. Capacity is decent, but parking is another thing. Letcher Central always ran shuttle buses. When Whitesburg, and Fleming Neon hosted parking was a problem. Don't remember if Letcher ever hosted a regional game or not.

Went to Letcher last year to watch the 14th region final, had to park at a mcdonalds about 2 miles away and ride the school bus. Felt like I was in school again. KCC wiped the floor with PCC, last time I make that trip haha

Like ekff says , no farther than most other gyms, just up hill !! Nice gym to watch a ballgame in !!
