Im not gonna disagree that football may be more popular....
But HS basketball is personal.
Family plays against family... neighbors play against each other... the people cheering for the other team are people you know... The "rich" kids that live in one county but go to school in another because they think they are so much better than you.... High school Baksketball in Kentucky means so much more than 32 minutes of play.
Games are talked about for years after they have been played. How many points (this person) had or if (So & So) would have made their freethrows.... High School basketball in Kentucky are some people's "Family Night Out" or the only time that little granny and grandpa go to town to watch Junior play against that "team from Lexington"

Quick question and without looking it up. Can you tell me who played in the basketball state finals in 1988? Can you name 2 of the 8 teams who competed for the state football titles that same year?

Make it 3 of the 8 for football because class-A is a gimmie

Great point. That may the best final in KHSAA basketball history. I don't think basketball and football are even close. From grade to college it's basketball. Football is great and I love it but this isn't debatable. People talk about Kentucky high school basketball all over the country. I would say they don't talk about much in football outside of Trinity, Highlands, etc.

^He knows what I'm getting at; it doesn't have to be that particular year. History says basketball, and if it wasn't basketball, then there wouldn't be 12-14,000 people sitting in Rupp Arena at noon on a Wednesday in March. To each his own tho. I'm almost 30 years old and during my college spring break days, I never once went to Florida and had plenty of opportunities to.

No disrespect to football, baseball, softball and so on...nothing comes close to high school basketball in general and especially come post season time.

Go to a Friday night game and I assure you will find more people than at a basketball game

Here is a tell tell sign for you It is tournament time in basketball and there is still over 1000,000 more post for football on this site.

You will find good crowds in September because the weather is great at night for one thing. Unless it is a playoff type team, the crowds aren't very good come late October or November. More post on a website isn't a tell tell sign either, that could just mean more football fans are attracted to this type of stuff. I mean, if I were a basketball fan in Alabama I'd hate to think I wouldn't notice the difference in sports and it should be no different in Kentucky with basketball. I've had many arguments with my former football playing friends and they just hate to admit it. Most people would say they love both as I do but come on. Basketball is a sport were on any given night a team can do some things and pull of a huge win as an underdog. You rarely see underdogs in football win. It's just too easy to be so much better than everyone else. And from the looks of it, 200 more people are viewing the basketball post as we speak. So that's not an argument either.

Ballard beat clay county. I think Richie farmer had 50 points or something like that. I don't know in football

Football for me no question about it. The crack of the pads the smell of the grass, (we still have grass) Friday night lights, and the women in tight shorts and shirts at tailgate parties wow ! The preparation of getting to the away games with your "buds" nothing comes close to football.

Schools with only a good basketball team- "basketball time is better"
Schools with only a good football team- "football time is better"
