Bell County's All Time Greats
#1
A post in another tread got me to thinking back. Who are some of the all time favorite/best players to have played at Bell High? Maybe by the end of this post we can put together an All-Time Legends team.
#2
Old school or new or both

Bell County has had so many players you about have to go with Mount Rushmore for positions!

HB-Phillip Green, Lance Burnett, Jonathan Polly, Dwayne Good, Shawn Robbins, Scott Chaney, Cory Davenport, Reggie Robbins,
QB-Derek Jones, Shawnta Zachery, Jason Crockett, Ben Madon
FB-Ben Brooks, Kevin Napier, Justin Goodin, Joe Smith, Brent Barton
WR-Joe McGeorge, Harvey Miracle, Buckeye Hunter, Cody Davenport
TE-Darrin Clark, Tommy Crockett, Eric Ely, Brent Slusher
OL-Arthur Carter, Justin Boatright, Jason Green, Dan Turner, Jordan Marcum, Joe Hammontree, Jacob Warren, Caleb Carter
DL-Billy Lawson, Will Henderson, Fred Hoskins, Joe Smith, Kevin Napier, Arthur Carter, Robert Muncy, Tyler Harbin
LB-Crit Calebs, Shawn Jones, Jeremy Collett, Brandon Coomes, Brent Barton, John Dudley Hilton, Jonathan Polly, John David Lefevers
DB-Derek Jones, Ben Madon, Dallas Greer, Jason Crockett, Matt Ely, Keith Nelson, Harvey Miracle, Clint Chedester
K-Monte Merrick

I know I've forgot a lot of good players, but this is off the top of my head. Some positions I went ahead and put 8 players down for. My favorite 0player to watch play was Scott Chaney though. And Keith Nelson because he was an Arjay boy like me.

I'll go ahead and repost this. HaHa

Where's Christian Mason?
#5
Russell Miracle
#6
Who is Shawn Jones? If it is the one I am thinking of he played at Estill Co.
#7
WhyLie Wrote:Russell Miracle

Yep, Russell's teammate Roscoe Perkins (UK, EKU, Miami Dolphins) had a nice career, too.
#8
Running backs my top 3 would be Lance Burnett, Shawn Robbins, and Reggie Robbins. Do not remember or know how big Shawn Robbins was, but I thought he had D-1 speed.
#9
It must be flat out impossible for Bell fans to cut their list to four.
#10
old and new not asking you to limit your list. list any favorite player or memory make a list no criteria or limits

It is hard. Sorry it bothers you so much.
#12
I think it's interesting/funny that the list can't be narrowed to four.
Of course, it can, but you guys can't admit all these "best evers" you've had through the years aren't all the best ever.

Maybe we don't won't to because we realize the efforts of all the players and coaches that have contributed to Bell Co Football. It's to bad your school apparently does have anything to talk about so you're over here hating/trolling. Thanks for being so interested in Bell Football

Its not like Harlan Co. where you have 5 or 6 years to choose from. We are talking about 30 years almost of being a top level program. I like the fact so many former players are getting praised on here.
#15
I listed four schools, some that go back 50 years.
There's no hate involved, just observations and questions. I don't think I said anything negative about any Bell players.

Are you not counting the old Bell County on 119? It's the same name and nickname.
How many signed Division I scholarships or were Mr. Football finalists or winners? That helps divide the good from the great on many of the other schools.
#17
Just b/c you sign a D-1 scholarship does not make you a great HS football player. Many great players never get to play NAIA for whatever reason. Lack of size, speed, strength or something else.

I wouldn't consider our D-1 signees to be our best ever HIGH SCHOOL football players.

Russell and Roscoe were unbelivable according to the old timers. Russell still holds some basketball records during the sweet 16.Could be the best athlete every at Bell Co. Both of those guys must have been studs. Too bad they were a little before my time.

From 1989 till present here is a handful of Skill OFF OL Skill Def and DL that come to mind:
TE - Harvey Mircle, RB- Lance Burnett, QB -Derrick Jones , WR-Joe McGorge, Center-Cody Marcum, Guard-Mike Howard. Tackle-Tan Hudson and Boatright, Monte Merriick Best kicker

Def Safety-Jason Crockett, Corners-Reggie robbins and Cory Davenport, LBS- Crit Callebs and Barton, De-Tackles-Joe Smith and Carter,

Just my opinion

I remember the first ever Bell vs. Belfry game I went to as a kid a RB with the last name "Knuckles" or something like that. He put on a show and Bell beat Belfry going away. I am thinking either 1991 or 1992. Am I remembering correct?

Both years. He ran the FB trap as good as anyone ever. Small guy but hard to tackle. Knuckles was his name.
#23
Steve knuckles was his name and he was #7
#24
If you want to go back to old school my dad was telling me about the twins that played in the 70's at old bell. They was small but was mean.

As a boy what I remember about that game was the scary trip over a foggy Pine Mountain and that I wish my last name was as cool as "Knuckles" HAHA

Jacob Warren OL, Cory Davenport-RB and Tommy Crockett-TE were 3 young men that were among the best at their positions as well.
#27
Bell has had some dang good players over the year reading this list. recent memory though some of the names that stick out best to me would be..
QB- Shawnta Zachery, never seen Bell as comfortable throwing the ball as they were with him.
RB- Shawn Robbins, I don't think I ever saw him have a bad game. Semmed like it was impossible to hold him in check an entire game.
RB-Cory Davenport, Alot like Robbins, but watching the two, I'd put robbins ahead of him.
FB- Brent Barton, guy was a grown man by his sophomore year and a load to bring down.
WR- Stephen "Buckeye" Hunter, if I'm not mistaking he still has a few records at the school for track times, he could fly and was badly under rated and not utilized to his full abilities. Matt Raines. speed for days.
TE- Eric Ely, I think he was 6'9 or 6'10..talk about a redzone threat. Brent Slusher, Don't think he even played Tight end until his junior year and wound up being recruited to Auburn as a 3* TE prospect.
OL- Too many to even think of, Jordan Marcum, Mike Howard, Cody Marcum, Tan Hudson, Calleb Carter, Jonathan Defevers, I know there's so many being left out. All big strong huge guys.
DL- Need alot of help on this one but two that stands out are definitely Billy Lawson and Dustin Mason.
LB- Brent Slusher, Brent Barton, JD Hilton. All three were great up at Bell.
DB- Raines, Hunter, Kyle Nelson, although he didn't play it much Cory Davenport, Justin Dozier, Jeff Howard a lot of solid db's to choose from.
K/P- Merrick hands down. One of the best in state history.
#28
I know one thing. Bell always has a great running back and sometimes more than one. I would have to put Lance in first on the offensive side and Joe Smith first on the defensive side. Just my opinion though.
#29
From my standpoint, which is 20+ years of watching high school football, I think Robbins was the best player to come out of Bell County from a high school player standpoint.
Even though hes a kicker, Monte Merrick was responsible for more wins than anyone to come threw Bell County. You knew you were starting from the 20 and had no chance. He could also nail it from 50.
#30
There were some players who I'm not saying there were the best, but I loved watching them play over the years:

Shawn Jones
Derek Jones
Arthur Carter
Crit Calebs
Scott Chaney
Robert Muncy
Matt Ely
Jason Crockett
Chris Hensley
Keith Nelson
Kevin Napier
Shawn Robbins
Shawn Johnson
Kyle Nelson
Keith Lowe
Matt Simpson
Shawnta Zachery
