Referees in the 15th region
#1
Why is the officiating in the 15th region so bad? I am not talking about bad calls against your home team, but I am talking in general. I am a Shelby Valley fan, but I have watched many other teams play and the officials are just horrible. Even the veteran officials make such bad calls that it seems as if they are cheating the other team. Maybe if we started quoting the bad calls they make, they would try to do a better job.

One thing I have figured out Trufan, is that no matter what happens, the refs are always gonna upset someone.
But I agree with you that they are horrible.
I would rather have 15th than 14th or 13th though

KHSSA needs to look into the checks and balances with the way the Refs are scored and rated. Maybe even have these ratings looked at by an outside entity that is not affiliated with that particular region/district. After so many bad reviews, maybe they should be bumped down to JV or elementary level for a time. Then after a review (from coaches) and X amount of games, then and only then would they be considered to come back to call higher level games.

LOL..nice link. If you think their so bad, fill out an app and become one. Those guys do these games for basically nothing. (65$ or something) taking away family time , driving sometimes 60$ in gas to get there and back so they are doing it sometimes for free. They have to listen to mommy and daddy all night yelling, I'd say officiating is tougher than it seems. I respect them, no one is prefect, sometimes bad calls are made.

Most referees are honest and get a bad rap which is the same as in the college game. I know many refs in 14th, 15th and 16th regions and they are good ones. No system is perfect and there will never be 100% fairness with human element involved.

Good post.

I challenge everyone to go find a seat at a ballgame where you're not in earshot of someone who is giving the refs down the road.

It's impossible.

If you choose to be a ref ,work hard and try to be the best. you know what you are going to make so don't bitch about it.

I actually am a referee and have been one for a very long time, I don't do it much anymore( maybe I should), this post wasn't meant to be complaining because I feel my team gets the short end of the stick, but a legitimate gripe about how bad officials have become. I know they don't get paid very much, neither do teachers but there are evaluations that go with that job too.

Most of these refs are now making a $130 a night doing both the J V and varsity games, that's pretty good money for 3hrs work. I'm seeng more and more doing this full time. If the Khsaa was serious about it they would hire a outside source to grade them because the coaches will not give them a bad score for fear it will come back to bite them. The only thing that has bothered me this year is that in some of the better games that sometimes the best officials are not working them

The refs if the 15th region get $55. The JV gets $45. If they do both, they get $100. The 15th region runs from Louisa to East Ridge and Phelps. By the time they leave work without supper, go to the game and get home, it could take about 5 hours. Subtract the gas money (Let's be conservative and say $10), that leaves them $45 for being away from home about 5 hours. That's $9 an hour to get talked to like a second class citizen. And remember, fan is short for fanatic. Ninety five percent of all fans have blinders on. Every call against their son or daughter is a bad call. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The state of Kentucky, from grade school to UK, has got to be the worst about blaming the refs for every loss. But, that's our society. Blame others for our shortcomings. At the end of the game, how many free throws did the refs miss? How many turnovers did they have? How many offensive rebounds did they give up? It's time for everyone to pull up their laces and take responsibility for coming up short. But, remember two things: 1) If you think you can do better, by all means, get licensed and help out. 2) A game has never started without referees on the floor. A game can be played without the fans, but it can't be played without the refs. As for being accountable, do you think it is really easy to recruit people to get yelled at, cursed at, and berated for $9 an hour? Some of you people are unreal.

First off as a former official, it shouldn't be about the money! You do it because you love the game and the kids that participate period. If it is about the money then there lies the answer as to why some officials are so bad. Most officials do a good job, but there are a few who are flat out pathetic. You are only going to make 50% of the people happy and yes there are those who have blinders on with unrealistic expectations of the officials and their son or daughter. When basketball games are let get completely out of control and turn into football games or rugby matches and players are injured due to a referee who has an agenda toward a particular school, then he needs to go!

I have nothing but respect for any man or woman who will give of their time and listen to the complaining night in and night out while FAIRLY officiating a game. And by FAIRLY I mean consistently and honestly. I also have nothing but disrespect and down right anger toward someone who signs up to perform an ethical job and displays the total opposite! Its not everyone and I think most know who falls in this category.

Jordan Hall is the worst I have seen. He calls the game like he doesn't actually know the rules. Disgraceful.

BG Cat, exactly where I wanted this thread to go, it isn't about becoming a ref or the money for calling a game, it is about ethics and morality in doing a job for the love of the game. I have called many games and have never taken a dime for it, because it isn't about the few dollars you would make but a chance to be around a game that I have loved and enjoyed since childhood. I know that a lot of calls are judgement calls based upon the observer, but when a foul is called or not called for reasons that appear to be based upon ones prejudice against another team or person is what bothers me.

Jordan Hall is terrible hands down but he's not the worst. Most of them don't know the rules. They're are only a hand full of good ones. If you make Paul Pelfry mad he will screw you and I don't see how he can call a district game that involves jc and paintsville he is a sponsor of their radio stations You would hope the ref would never try to impact the game like some of them do it's obvious they play favorites. Very very very inconsistent.

There isn't a competent referee in the 15th but I believe they just make mistakes and do their best. Sometimes their best sucks.

With that said, if you've read my posts on this forum there's two I don't care a bit for. I won't state names, but I CRINGE when they walk into the building when my Pirates are playing.

15th can't be as bad as 13th.

We lost to Pikeville on Saturday. At one point I thought their fans would storm the floor after one particular ref! LOL It was really really bad. There's one ref, not the one that Pikeville was the most upset with, that we call the T-ref. He is ALWAYS calling technical fouls, and will delay the game, stand and stare at one of the players or coaches.......just itching to call the big T. Sometimes, I believe the worst refs are those who's trying to be seen.

The 13th refs are horrible as well

It seems to me when they ref the region, they are late on almost every call they make.
Like they are a little indecisive.

Scott Shannon is one of the best officials in the 15th. He calls it fair, straight down the middle, and is more than competent. I love how he works a game. He deserves a region spot in post-season.
