Whitley Co. 72 Barbourville 69
#1
Final

Whitley County is off to a surprising start this year

Whitley is much better than anyone thought, Good win for the Colonels.
#3
Whitley leads by as many as 14, Barbourville makes a second half run as three Colonels foul out. Whitley never trailed in the game, and 5 Colonels score in double figures, the Colonels made plays down the stretch and hold off Barbourville at home.

Whitley showed great poise throughout the game especially late in the game.

Good road win for a young team!!!

This was Bvilles first lost wasn't it?

Yes. They have played well this year. Did not get to catch this game but saw them beat Middlesboro. Will be strong in 1A.

Looks like Whitley will be moving up in our 13th Region Power Rankings after week one.

Whitley has some good athletes on their team.

^^Yes the Colonels do have some good athletes and they are good basketball players too. The best part they are young and hungry. They are getting better each time out and play so hard, mistakes don't seem to stick out as much as what they lack in ability they make for in hustle.

The interesting thing about this team is that they can score with 6 or 7 different players. And being so young they are going to get better.

The most impressive thing about the game was in the first half Whitley had solid defense in the half court. They limited good shots on basket and forced a lot of bad perimeter shots. Phipps played well and showed some guts in the second half making some big threes to get his team back in the game when they were down by as many as 14.

Whitley overcame foul trouble with three players (Woods, Johnson and Barton) fouling out with almost a quarter to play. Saskco stepped up and got the ball up the floor, and Crisologo made some great drives to the basket. Petrey had some key rebounds and they got key free throws to fall late to preserve the win.

This is the type of win that they Colonels can use as a foundation to build on.
