Well I don't have a dog in this fight but it seems to me that these same parents who are mad because their kid doesn't play would be mad if their child was good and had to sit out because a coach put in a less talented player so either way these same people would always be complaining about something.Find something your child is good at and he will love that because he is good at it and develop that talent to its fullest.

But rest assured that if I had a child and they did attend a school in Johnson County I would find one that wasn't WR Castle . Not because of the coach, because he seems to be doing exactly what he should be doing. He seems to be playing his best players when he is supposed to be playing them. I would choose another to stay away from the number of nut case parents that seem to infest this school.

Well, it is clear that we are dealing with irrational individuals who have no concept of the importance of teaching life skills and, as coach Starns said, the fact that life is not always fair.

I don't know this coach personally but I feel very sorry for him if the persons posting in this thread are the parents of any of his players. If that is the case and the attitudes expressed in this forum are being brought onto the basketball court by their children, it is no wonder that only 5 or 6 players get to play in a game. And, it is amazing that this team faired as well as it did this year.

If I had to venture a guess as to the root of the problem, I would say that this coach refused to be bullied by the parents of his players, stood his ground and refused to compromise his expectations merely to satisfy a few parents.

Oh, and isn't it funny how the story grows as needed for those who are spinning the yarn? I find it a little strange that as the thread continued to morph and the allegations began to grow. It started out that this coach refused to play more than 5 or 6 players then later on it was "oh, by the way, did I mention that he also cursed the kids in practice?" I am sure that if this thread runs long enough someone will find a way to pin the Kennedy assasination, Watergate Scandle, the Iran / Contra Scandle and the OJ murders on this coach as well. It's typical...sad but typical.

Why start now??? season is over.

Let me tell you what is going on at my son's school, and then I will tell what we are going to do about it!
First off, my son has played both Freshman and JV this year, actually, he has only dressed JV but never played.
How well has he played??? Well, he has played very well considering he only plays just over 78 minutes a game.He rarely had any turnovers, and if our team could shoot at all, he would have averaged 3-4 assists per game, in his limited play. Now I am not trying to say he is a superstar, he isn't. But in all actuality, he is as capable as any guard we have as a freshman. Heck, he was even told by a starting guard that he should be starting. Anyway, now that our big freshman 6 game season is over, all that is left is JV. Different coaches than Freshman. Without ever seeing a game, they decide to bring 5-6 freshmen to practice with their non varsity sophs in JV practice!!! The other 6 freshmen are not invited to even practice to show they are just as deserving, even if the coaches would NEVER in a million years play them in a JV game. But they can or are supposed to dress JV!!!
Is that not worse than any of your complaints???
You say your coaches just make some of the kids sit during practice, and we have coaches not even allowing some kids to even be at practice!!!
Well....Monday, my son's uniforms are being returned to school and given to his coaches, I will thank his coaches for what they have taught my son this year, and then I will graciously leave.
My son has learned a tremendous amount this year, as he told me he was never playing again, as the coaches are only playing certain chosen ones and he understands that he is not one of them. He has accepted it and I asked him if he wanted to transfer to another school, and his reply was NO, I want to get ready for baseball...
Now,....is your problems any greater, or do you think I should go headhunting??

I know a junior the gets the same disrespect, only now he can't get any playing time on the freshman team. You are really fortunate that your child is finally old enough to realize what he needs. Some kids don't enjoy basesball and refuse to give up on their dream of playing basketball. It's just heartbreaking as a parent to see your kids have faith in something that you know may never change.

I don't have a child playing ball now, mine are adults and have children of their own. But, I am a grandmother and I go to the grade school games. One of the concerns that I have is the message that our children are being sent. I know that we like to win, but I also know we have got to learn to take defeat. I don't think anyone enjoys watching those grade schooler's play ball anymore than I do. I clap when they do good, I moan when they do bad. It doesn't matter which team it is. If the opposing side makes a great play I can congratulate that child. The only way children are going to learn is by participation and practice. The lower grades are where they are to get their training for high school. I watched kids play who don't know the mere fundamentals of the game, all they're being taught to do is run and shoot. I've seen coaches tell the four other players don't shoot the ball pass it to so and so. Well so and so has been having off nights lately, and surprise, surprise, a player who hardly got any play, has suddenly become this very capable ball player. We played Betsy Layne grade school (whom I think is a great coach) and after the regulation game, they added minutes so the kids who didn't play had a chance to get some playing time. I think it's time to think about the children and what they need, instead of the parents, fans and coaches and what they want. REMEMBER THE CHILDREN.

I was always taught opions are like butt holes everyone has one!!! I just see things differently than you guys.I love the way you keep on giving the coach praise for his tedious task and awesome record. Do you think UK might be calling him to replace Tubby after this season? The coach was not bullied by the parents as far as I know. I don't expect your opinion to change and to be honest I really could not care less if it did. It doesn't take long to get a grasp on someone's mental capacity. And when that mental capacity is limited it is not unusual that he or she would have dificulty following a deeply cognitive, higher-level line of rationale. So, don't feel bad if you fail to understand the neuances of this discussion. Why do some schools have coaches that only play 5 players no matter what? I watched a game last night at Johnson Central High School between WR Castle and Central Elementary.It was a good game but WR's coach would not sub at all.They ended up losing by 8 points.I heard WR's coach was a real humdinger and He only plays certian kids that he likes and when he holds practice he only practices 6 and lets the other 11 kids sit in the bleachers!!! If this is true I think the coach got what he deserved.It's a shame that stuff like this takes place at such a low level of play.Why not give every kid a opportunity to play and maybe they will develop into something special.If they don't they can always sit the bench then!!! :boosign:

in biddy ball every player should get to play and thats all there is to it. Aint no point in makin little kids feel bad bout themselves.

I wish I were the coach of that team. I would have had a lot of fun tossing some of those idiotic parents out of practice on their ear. You would have probably been the first to go. As a matter of fact, there would have been NO parents in practice to begin with. From what I have read, the only mistake this coach made was not having closed practices. Wild thread to say the least. I've had children play several sports in their school years, and I've even helped in the coaching capacity for a few years, and if there's anything that I've learned its that you can't please everyone all of the time,shoot it's getting so you can't please hardly anyone some of the time. All you can hope to do is teach what sport you choose to with love and passion, learn how to deal with the unhappy parents, and hope the alka setser company don't shut down the processing plants before the season ends.

I think every kid should get to play if they come to every practice and work hard. Some kids might be more talented than others, but like somone said earlier in this thread kids sometimes develop late. I for one was clumsy as a 4th grader, but I grew out of it. And now I love the game of basket ball.

I know Randy Davis is a GREAT young coach at Dorton. A young coach who knows the game and a great teacher of the game!

Not only is Randy Davis a great coach he is a great role model and is respected by his ballplayers which means a lot.

You said we wonder why kids are the way they are. Do you think maybe the parents have a little something to do with that.

Whats wrong with showing kids that only the good players should play. Whats wrong with teaching our kids that hard work pays off and that if you are good at something you can excell, but if you are not gifted in a certain area, maybe you should use the talents the good Lord gave you. For example, I have always wanted to play the guitar but i am not blessed in that area, therefore, i had to learn to deal with that.

And I am just wondering what effect it has on our kids when they go to a game and see parents yelling and screaming at the refs. Not only parents but, I dont know, maybe elected county officals acting completely out of control. Just wondering what effect that has. But its easier to always blame the coach or the refs....Its never the kids or the parents fault

:no: Oh Really!!! Well, it's a good thing the Good Lord has no respect to person, unlike many others. A child is not just given the ability that she or he may have. For example, a child is not born with the ability to read. It is taught to them by a patient and caring individual who is kind enough to convey to them how. And why? If it is needful. It is a very well known fact, that a child who has the advantage of a special person and or persons who are willing to spend the time needed with them excel at anything they undertake to acheive. I play guitar and no, I wasn't born with a guitar in my hand . It took many, many hours of practice before I played. God has blessed me. This is without a doubt, True , but he also has shown me that it is not just given it is acheived. To cheat a child out of the chance to learn by trial and error, at such a young age, is without a doubt one of the most shameful traits one could have to his or her credit. Simply because, your public standing was more important to you than the children. My thoughts are this , if this is the case with you, you should get out before you damage more young children. This is a quote from my twelve year old son which was on the team, practice every day, ran his guts out the day after the "A" Team lost, though he hisself was not even put in the game : "It's stupid not to even be allowed to play even though, in practice , you , time and time again, would drive the basketball from one end of the court to the other, without even being touched by any of the five starters. So , improving myself everyday in practice, didn't help me at all. I was lied to time and time again , being told that my showing up for practices on Sunday, that I would play in the "A" Team games. I feel very much cheated."
And as for the rest of the boys who were cheated, don't let anyone ever tell you that you are not "Good enough" because they are the ones that are not "good enough" to be your coaches or critics. In my book, your winners!:champ:

First off, I haven't disregarded anyone. However, if we are going to discuss the subject of disregard , how about this? I have read this thread from beginning to end and I must say, I have never witnessed so much disregard for the feelings of children in my entire life. Statements such as " not good enough" or " less talented" are statements better left unsaid. In words spoken more plainly, " you should have kept your mouth shut and only been thought a fool instead of opening it and removing all doubt". To bash innocent children with those statements is absolutely ridiculous. For grown, supposed adults, to allow such things to go forth from their mouths shows, undoubtedly to me, that these persons should not be allowed to coach, or in any way, have the opportunity to influence young children in any way. I don't know, who is who ,as far as the authors of each comment made in this thread but I will say this, I you know who you are one of those who repeatedly referred to these children as "not good enough" or "less talented" or any other degrading statement directed toward the children, you can very easily tell how I feel about what you have done. Hey!!!!!! Here's a thought! How about we go back to the time when it was not about "grown men" trying to live out their own fantasies of being a NCAA coach but it was about teaching young children the game of basketball and allowing them to have fun as children. As far as the problem of keeping coaches goes, there was no problem back when it was manditory that whoever was to coach had to first have a " Teaching Degree". It's a shame that our children must suffer through the humiliation of being exploited by some egotistical bunch of nonsense by someone who doesn't even qualify by Law to "teach". Hey VoiceofReason, if you guys don't get my Eagles back on track maybe you will be getting a book by the name of "COACHING 101". We have way to much talent to be losing by 30 to the Ville. Our Eagles are to predictable, we need to change up some things. I have talked to some of the players and they are getting sick and tired of doing the same things over and over. Other coaches are figuring us out. We are way too predictable at this point in the season. If you have any pull with this team see if you can change a few things for us hard/core Eagle fans.

I have a point on Grade School coaches also, I think it should be mandatory that you played b-ball in high school and you are a college graduate before you can coach at this level. Here in Johnson Co. it's who you know not where you graduated from that get's you a elementary coaching job. Sad but true!

I agree with some of the comments that have been posted on here. But I want to correct one thing- most of the time coaches are simply hired for who they are and who they know. In both the County and at Paintsville. Every now and then you will get lucky and find a coach who is there for the right reasons- the kids.

Coaching at any level can prove to be quite difficult. You have the responisbilty of teaching the values of being a team player, the ruls and points of the game, and putting up with parents who will never be satisfied. We all want what is best for our kids- but some take it too far by trying to live in their shoes, embarassing their kids by yelling things at them and other players at their games, and not giving the child a chance to grow as a player.

Coaching should always be about the kids not about furthering one own's career or dreams. hh:
