That's several times you have referred to Belfry as a mediocre football team. Belfry demolished Bourbon County last year and has 1 more ring than them. Belfry has been to the semi-finial round somewhere around 8 or 9 times out of the last 10 years. So the question from me is, where in the world would that place Bourbon County? :eyeroll: I will admit that Belfry is not world beaters, and to be honest I am surprised we made it this far this year. But mediocre they are not. If that is the case then Bourbon County would be like the jam between our toes.

This game is going to come down to who can hang on to the pigskin. During the regular season, Belfry had a tendency of putting the ball on the ground early in games. This allowed teams such as Pike Central and Lawrence County to hang around in games, they had no business hanging around in. Also, If I am not mistaken, Belfy had some costly turnovers in the Johnson Central game as well, taking them out of contention for a win. This postseason, Belfry has held on to the ball and they are playing their best football of the season. If Belfry can continue to limit their turnovers, I like the Pirates by 2tds. If the Pirates turn the ball over early, and allow Bourbon to build a lead, I feel like Bourbon has too good of an offense for Belfry to be able to play catch up. The bottom line is, if Belfry hangs on to the ball, they win, if the Pirates don't hang on to the ball, Bourbon will be representing the east in Bowling Green. Good Luck to both teams!!!!!!!!

Some Serious Fodder For Today:
When was the last time Bourbon played in a game with as much hype, and with as much on the line, as this?
I know last year definitely is congruent in terms of what was on the line...but I am wondering if Bourbon has ever played a game with the enormity of this Friday in their program's history aside from the State Championship win.
Even in that Championship Game Bourbon entered basically with the stigma of "Nothing to Lose" being such a dark horse team that made the run... not nearly the pressure as what they have entering this week.
The next question that goes along with that is will it have an affect on the mental aspect of this game?
Belfry has been on this stage numerous times...every single player on the team has played for a State Title (even the Freshmen who played for one at the Middle School Level).. for the Seniors this is their 4th Semi-Final in a row and I would say they have played in 8-10 games where the environment was electric with their season on the line (3 State Finals, 3 Semi-Finals, the past two Breathitt Regional Finals).
There is no doubt from comments on here and on Twitter that the Bourbon players are obsessively thinking of Friday.. and with time off for Thanksgiving, that will only amplify. This could be good...but I think we can all agree that it could also be a bad thing for Bourbon if they come out tight.

As a program Bourbon is below mediocre, the difference is there is no cult following that believes we are the Crimson Tide. You can ask any fan of Bourbon County and they will tell you, we have our good years we have our bad years, but noone will tell you that because we have a State Championship and two straight regional titles that we are some top tier program.
Highlands
Trinity
St. X
Boyle
Central
Mayfield
Beechwood
Those are good programs. Programs that consistently get the job done, and programs with rational fans. When Chuck Smith left Boyle they kept winning titles. When Morris and Leahy left Mayfield, they kept winning titles. Mueller has dominated everything since he's been with highlands, but they had 2 or 3 titles before him. Beechwood has been winning titles since the 80's.
Its just crazy to me that most Belfry fans think they are this juggernaut that has ruled football since the beginning of time.
To me its impressive that Haywood has the most wins in KY history, but he has coached for 40 years, he should be up there.

Actually when Bourbon played Lawrence in this same game in '97 it was much more hyped than this one and the State game for that matter. This Friday will be packed, but it will not match that game, that I can promise.

This entire year has been built around losing at Belfry last year. Last year, I heard the coaches were trying to build up the kids to believe they could do anything and everything and Belfry showed them that is not the case. This year, the kids know what to expect and know they aren't unbeatable as they may have thought last year. I don't expect Bourbon to play tight in this game, I could be wrong but I feel the pressure is still on Belfry more than it is on Bourbon. After all, you all have been here 9 out of the last 10 years?

Probably, but he is still butt hurt over Belfry beating Lawrence County the first time. Several posters picked Belfry in a land slide and Lawrence made a game of it and he cried that no one gave Lawrence any credit for it and has hated on Belfry since. That bout sums it up.

I think the pressure is solely on Bourbon.. they got it handed to them last year, and have made getting to this game and playing Belfry tier super bowl. To Belfry this is business as usual they are used to games like this and are battle tested. If you think this thread is funny.. you should switch over to twitter.. The Bourbon players are hilarious... Here is a sample tweet for you from one of the players..
it's that fact that most of us want a state ring.. but me? no.. no, see I want belfry, I wanna punish them break them down & destroy them

I am enjoying all of this trash talk this week.... wish I could make the game as I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these boys play for years. Belfry must play their typical smash mouth football without turning it over and MUST minimize mental errors (false starts, etc) that have been a plague to them at times this year-- IF they play as well as they have been the past 3 weeks, they win going away.... if NOT, this may be a dog fight that takes the wind from their sails with the Colonels heading to BG!

You named elite programs...
Belfry is not an elite program.... but Belfry is in another world compared to lumping them in the same category as Bourbon County who has only been a blip on the radar a couple times over the course of history.
Elite:
Trinity
Highlands
St. X
Mayfield
Male
Elite With An Asterisk:
Boyle County- They were not a very good program pre-Smith..
Beechwood- Beechwood's program revolves around Yeagle.. without him they are trending back to earth
CovCath- A program that would have double digit titles if not for Highlands
Danville- Not recently elite...but for years they were a household name
Central- Unbelievable run recently..."good" history prior..but elite under Scroggins
Very Good Programs- Teams who have long sustained success, house hold name programs, won the Title :
NewCath- Benefitted greatly from 6-Class System
Bowling Green- Elevating in recent years... good for very long time
Ft. Campbell
LexCath
Belfry
Bell County
Pikeville
Russell
Corbin
Breathitt County
Paducah Tilghman
Good Programs- Programs who either have had isolated runs of success on statewide level, or have the name recognition but not the pedigree of deep playoff runs:
Ashland Blazer
Somerset
Manual
Russellville
Owensboro Catholic
Owensboro
Hazard
Mercer County/Harrodsburg
Bardstown
Pburg
Bourbon falls in the next tier of schools... the teams who have enjoyed isolated prominence but don't have the name recognition or sustained success/history
Quality Programs:
Trigg County
Bourbon County
Warren Central
Hopkinsville
Henry Clay
etc.. you can list several teams here
When I think Mediocre I think of teams like:
Motgomery County
Whitley County
PRP
Lafayette
Raceland
Lawrence County
These are programs who have had some nice teams and perennially have a quality team... but never really have enjoyed a deep playoff run or post-season success to warrant statewide name recognition

10 of 11 but who's counting...
Belfry definitely has pressure on them...especially with Central losing and the Pirates being ranked #1 the majority of the year... but at the same time just as you said this is the Friday Bourbon has been stewing over for 365 Days..this is the game the staff has been reminding them of... this is a "must win" for Bourbon and a crop of Seniors that have such high expectations... to Belfry this is just another Semi-Final and just another team trying to keep them from Bowling Green. Their focus has been solely on what it takes to get back to Bowling Green and avenge a pair of games that were decided essentially by an extra point.
These Seniors have had numerous games where they entered playing a game the entire State was watching.. heck look at the build up to Belfry vs. Somerset, belfry vs. Harlan County, and Belfry vs. Johnson Central just this season alone.. this Thanksgiving Preparation is old hat to the staff at this point.

There goes that selective reading again ... I said program, not team, program.
I watched film last night, I think you have a good team and you will be the best team Bourbon has played this year, and on the flip side Bourbon will be the best team outsided of JC that Belfry has played. That being said I also watched that CAK game Belfry fans are bragging about, you know the 6-6 team from Knoxville, and Bourbon would mop the floor with that team.
Belfry will be the most physical team Bourbon has played, and Bourbon will be far and away the most athletic team Belfry has played. Should be a good game.

You may or may not be right about CAK....but they were still very good....and could you have went on the road without 5 of your top players and won? No Justin Johnson, no Cameron Johnson or Horton or Austin Hatfield or X Willis. Not many teams could have overcome that and won the game.
11-25-2013, 10:33 AM
And BTW, 4 of those 5 are back and 100 pct., and a "down" CAK was still better than anyone you have played yet.
