There Was Bill Trivett, From Pikeville. Wendell Wallen, Sr. From Meade Memorial. I Think That It All Depends From which Part Of The Mountains That You Come From. :CE_DP_Ste alute:

If you want to talk history, let's go back in time. To my knowledge there has only been one coach in Ky that has won both a boy's and a girl's state championship in a 2 year span. Hazard High School Coach Pat Payne won the Girl's State Title in 1930 and the Boy's State Title in 1932. He would have to be considered one of the best coaches in the mountains.

Russell Williamson of Inez and Bobby Keith of Clay Co. have to be the 2 names at the top of most lists. They solidified basketball in Eastern Kentucky. Bill Mike Runyon could also be mentioned just below the first 2 because I think you don't consider a coach the "greatest" untill he has hung up the whistle. That is how I see it.

There has been two names that has not been mentioned in this thread one being Ugene Lyons and Bobby Osoborne. Both were great coaches for the old Virgie teams. With that being said though you also have to give Bill Mike Runyon, and Rodney Rowe also is up there to.

Did you know that legendary coach Morton Combs is a BULLDOG? Morton was a member of the 1932 Hazard Bulldogs boys basketball team when they won the Sweet 16 State Championship. Not only was he a member of the team but he made the winning shot. Morton graduated in 1933 from Hazard High School.
