The "Fight On The Floor" In 15th Region Tourney At JC
#1
When Did The "Fight On The Floor" Occur At Johnson Central During The 15th Region Tourney. I Think That It Involved Pikeville and Warfield In A Semi-Final Game. :CE_DP_Ste Confusedalute:

first i herd of it

Sounds like a made up thing. Pikeville has never played Warfield this year. Also, they played there All A game at Allen Central. So this story doesnt have any bit of truth to it.

Warfield Was One Of The Schools That Formed Sheldon Clark. I Think That This Game Occured In The Late 60's, But I Am Not Sure. It Is NOT A Made Up Thread. :CE_DP_Ste Confusedalute:

JC was not there in the 60s

The Game Did Not Occur In 1970, Regional Was Held At Prestonsburg That Year. May Have Been 1971. What Year Was JC Consolidated:CE_DP_Ste Confusedalute:

1969- JC consolidation

If I Remember Correctly The Fight Lasted 40-45 Min And Involved Players And Fans. It Was Quite A Sight. Took A Lot Of County Dputies And Some State Police To Finally Break It Up. :CE_DP_Ste Confusedalute:

I think the Regional at JC was in 1975, and I think JC beat Warfield in the semi's. Virgie and JC played the championship with JC coming out on top. I was at both games and don't remember anything like that. Just remember thinking someone must have paid the refs. Warfield was a better team. I played for a team that got beat out by Virgie after we beat Paintsville.

Here's a little history lesson courtesy of my dad who's been following 15th region basketball for about 40 years. The regional tourney in question was 1971 at Johnson Central...and yes indeed there was a very, very intense brawl between Pikeville and Warfield in the 2nd game of the Semi-finals. Pikeville was leading with very little time left (less than a minute) when one of Warfield's main guys picked up his 5th foul. Not going to give any names. A Pikeville played tried to shake his hand and next thing you knew all heck broke loose! Players vs players, fans all over the court duking it out..people hitting people over the head with metal chairs...it was a very serious situation that took at least 20 minutes if not longer to get things under control. Many people blame the fact that only one law enforcement officer was on hand when the brawl started. Several people were hurt and a starting guard from Pikeville suffered a broken collar bone and didn't play in the finals. McDowell killed Pikeville in the finals. Don't get the wrong idea, if Pikeville hadn't had that guy hurt it wouldn't have made any difference, McDowell was loaded and lost in the quarter finals of the state tourney in overtime to Anderson County, who was led by Jimmy Dan Connor of UK fame!

Hopes this helps.

Thanks Pisces. I Knew That It Involved Pikeville and Warfield. Just Couldn't Remember The Year. :CE_DP_Ste Confusedalute:

Sounds interesting. I had never heard of that before and good ol' Pisces gave us the whole story. Thanks.

Thinks Pisces I remember the fight breaking out at JC in the early 70's and I knew that Warfield was involved but I couldn't remember the other team.

I wasn't even a thought when this event took place, I'll have to ask my papaw and dad about it, maybe they remember.

I was at the Paintsville vs. Prestonsburg game when the big brawl broke out, but I was just a lil fella.

When I heard about this, I thought about the brawl in the movie, "The Wanderers."

I think that was the name of the movie. I picture that brawl at the end of the movie, on a football field, but I place it in a gym in my head.

One thing is for sure, basketball fans have calmed down alot over the years. When my uncle played back in the 70's fans from the opposing teams used to rock the bus as it drove away. Back in the late 80's and early 90's I remember ALOT of people vandalizing cars at basketball games. Hopefully it doesn't come to stuff like this anymore.

It was 1971 at Johnson Central in the semi-final between Pikeville and Warfield. I was in the middle of it and remember it quite well.

attended this game and was definitely a brawl. both sides of bleachers emptied and a lot
of blood spilled.
believe Pikeville had two players injured and were not able to play in finals.
McDowell was loaded that year with Glen Turner (Morehead) & Steve Smith (NC State)
signees and could have easily captured a state title that year.

I was there and remember it quite well. I was 12 years old and was about 10 rows off the floor. Scared the crap out of me. Go ahead Pulp Fiction and pop an old joke.

You are right that the regional championship game was played at JC in '75 and they did indeed beat Virgie in finals (I played in that game, BTW)....However, Warfield could not have had the better team that year....Warfield's last year was '72.....Virgie beat Prestonsburg in the semi's that year.

I was there during the fight. I remember that Warfield was involved but I thought that the other team was from Floyd County - either Wheelwright or McDowell. I was sitting under the press box when the fight broke out. The floor was packed with old men throwing hay makers and ripping jackets off one another. It took a long time to clear the floor and restore the peace.

Yes it was 1971 and I was freshman in high school and I was at the game and have to say it was bloody affair on both sides. By far the worst brawl in 15th region history and due to that fight the benches are now on the sideline at JC instead of along the baseline. I was also at the Paintsville - Prestonsburg game when that fight broke out but it did not come close to Warfield - Pikeville brawl as that was one for the ages and hopefully nothing of that scale will ever happen again.
