You guys got to calm down on all this Miller and college bball stuff. The 13th is weak. There are probably 5-6 players who could play at NAIA level and I'm not sure if any could play at the D1 level unless McDaniel quit golf and played all yr which would be absolutely stupid. I'm excited to see this Taylor kid from Corbin. Everyone is saying he's the "real deal" so we will see. Broughton from NL is the best young talent to come through in awhile. IF he can grow into his body and get that shot more consistent he could be a next level potential D1 player.

you guy's are real funny thinking that anyone in this region could play D1 ball fox has the skill and body to play but still not ready and for McDaniel he is not close to the cash kid from rock a difference error boys the 13th was much better back then.

I've not heard anyone say anything about D-1 players. But there are other levels of college ball out there

McDaniels is as good as Cash was.

If not better.

The Miller kid is getting bad advice, and that's a shame. I think the kid has real college potential. He has size and is a good athlete. I keep up with mountain sports. I have for 25 years. I don't know if I have ever seen a talented kid leave a regional contender, to play for a team that won 8 or 9 games the previous year and are expected to be just as bad or worse this season. Harlan lost a ton off of an 8 win team. The Johnson kid is gone. He was by far their most talented player. They lost 4 or 5 seniors. I guess Miller will have to score 35+ every night, because as far as I can see, he will be absolutely all they have. Terrible move!! The adults advising this kid should feel proud.

You do not live in Knox co. This has happen for thirty years or more probably knocked Knox out of more than a few regional championships. Some kids like big schools some do not.

A referee buddy of mine said he watched Harlan City this summer and was impressed by them actually. He said they had 3 young guards that played very well and their post players have gotten better. He said they beat Corbin and Pineville pretty good when he reffed the game. Adding Miller should really help them.

I think Middlesboro could make a run again this year. They have what could be one of the best 1-2 combos in the region with Foister and Poindexter. The Jackets also have a very good head coach in Thompson. Team is also coming off back to back regional apperances and a All A region title. Don't sleep on the Boro!

Taylor plays AAU basketball at the highest level and will be better prepared to compete with high school players. The Taylor kid is going to be good in a couple of years. I watched him this summer and his immaturity showed a few times and he got down on himself. I think he is going to be a great player in a year or two. He is very impressive. Not sure who the big kid is but he'll probably help in certain rolls/plays. I doubt he will get a ton of minutes but he will contribute.

Harlan was 8-13 over the summer, but they had something like eight freshmen and two sophomores out of 12 players. I saw them come from behind and beat Corbin. I think they lost to Pineville though. Miller should give them some offense in the post because the guys they have seem to better out on the floor. They are pretty good shooters.

The 2 most interesting teams are probably Jackson and Clay with transfers. I'm anxious to see how they fit in at those schools. Bell County and Knox are probably your other 2 top teams in the region and have pretty much everything in place from last year (Knox lost a couple guys, but return a lot of experience). The biggest issue at Knox is going to be the coaching mess (don't mean that against Evans, just the situation has been a headache with what all happeened).
That being said Harlan Co, South Laurel, Corbin, etc. aren't gonna roll over for any of the top ranked teams for sure.

I guess you all are counting "gym rat" Eric Swords led Lynn Camp Wildcats out?

McDaniels is fun to watch.Love his ball handling skills and he's not afraid to have the ball in his hands at crunch time.

Were you able to see Whitley play this summer?
Im curious as to who theyve got. I havent paid much attention to the boys team in years. I was told they have one or two kids doing really well this summer.

Whitley lost three starters to graduation and they struggled early in the summer in a scrimmage I saw at Harlan County.
I saw them again at LMU and was impressed with how hard they played. I think they were the only team to beat Harlan County that week at LMU.
They have Zack and Devin Rutherford back from last year. I think the other starters were James Sasko, Luke Woods and Chad Foley. Adam Petrey played a lot and gives them a little size, which they need. I think Levi Barton, Jordan Price and eighth grader Cory Johnson are also in the rotation.
They have a pretty good sophomore class, which is pretty weak overall in the 13th Region.
Corbin and South Laurel were hit really hard by graduation. Williamsburg could actually be favored going into the season despite their struggles last year because they have some nice athletes coming back. Whitley could definitely be competitive in the 50th.

HDE has included every player in the district. Clay County has added legend Trey Bowling to the coaching staff. This should be a big boost as him and McDaniel can discuss golf on the bus rides. Jake Allen has dropped 30 lbs and is looking great. If Wolfe heals up the Tigers are going to run away with the region, barring any major setbacks. They aren't extremely deep but there's not going to he any stopping of Allen and McDaniel. Blake Smith will be the surprise player of the region.

He asked about Whitley. Was that too much information?
I don't know about running away with the region in basketball, but if a golf game breaks out no one will touch Clay.
Did Wolfe get hurt in football? Who will be coming off the bench for Clay? I think several of the subs are playing football.

Knox Central was set back by the foolishness with the coaching situation. They should be very good this year. Swords will make a big difference at Lynn Camp. He is a gym rat who will make his kids better. Williamsburg will be much better this year. Their best players will be a year older and Andrew Griffith is back. They have also added a little size. Hill was a big loss for Corbin. They have put a lot of time into him over the last couple of seasons. Allen is a big body with skill. He will make Clay the Favorite in the 13th. If Bowling can teach the kids to shoot like him the 3's will fly for the Tigers.

I think I finally got HDE on one. Jackson County has a much, much better golf team than Clay Co. If a golf game breaks out McDaniel will win the individual but Jackson Co will win the 13th Region.

Actually, I was counting Trey Bowling and McDaniels' brother in that, but I guess they would be ineligible if they go by high school rules, so you're right. I noticed McDaniel didn't win the region earlier. I think that's a much bigger upset than anything that has happened lately in basketball.
10-03-2013, 08:22 PM
If the Neeley kid from Jackson county plays, Jake Allen will be shut down! The Neeley kid was better than Wagers last year! Rumor had it the Clay was recruiting the Neeley kid for this coming year, and still are!
10-04-2013, 11:13 AM
Clay is the obvious favorite. Knox has a chance but they always seem to falter. I'd be surprised if the champion was anyone other than those two......
I'd like to think North would be in the mix, but we lost too many players.

With all the big time national and statewide tournaments that McDaniels has won, he is yet to win the KHSAA state tournament. This may be his year. McDaniels actually come in 3rd in the region. Zack Norris actually beat him out for second by a stroke. Norris is a heck of a golfer too. He shot a 67 in an AJGA qualifier. Clay/Jackson area has become a hotbed of great young golfers.

Good info!
Thanks for the update.
Whitley hasnt been really competetive in the 50th in my lifetime, and its seen many changes over the last 30 years, but one constant is the fact that they cant get over the hump against Corbin.
Been 20 years since a win against Corbin happened, and i watched several Whitley teams that were better crumble.

Gut why has Whitley struggled so much in boys basketball over the years? They have a good grade school program and their middle school teams have had some success.

The first thing that comes to my mind is coaching stability. Also, from the A.D. up, I'm not sure they have really cared that much about it.

As SEKY said, when you look at coaching, i think it now stands at 13 or 14 coaches in the past 20 years, but its real simple when it comes to basketball and thats that the administation just doesnt care for it, and probably never will. Whitley should have enough talent to dominate Wburg and Corbin year in and year out, but you'll never see it.
Ive seen it first hand for 30 years. Until they get serious about bringing a good coach in and getting behind it, they'll always be a very average team.
