I think that they have a good chance of improving upon last years record. I can see them doing as well as 6-4 in a best case scenario and worst case scenario I see them at 3-7. I don't really know much about Union, VA(I believe they're a fairly new consolidated school) and I haven't heard much about Harlan will have this year. If I had to pick though, I would probably say that Middlesboro will go 5-5 this year. I will give them the benefit of the doubt with Union, VA. I think they beat Union(VA), Pineville, Harlan, LCA, and Danville. I think they will lose to Grant County, Somerset, Bell County, Corbin, and Pikeville.

What are your thoughts on this season MYJ?

Middlesboro has been a trendy "darkhorse" team for many in 2A..but I am not drinking the kool-aid. I know they return a lot of experience, but last year's team was not a very good team whatsoever. They finished 4-7 with wins over 2A Shelby Valley (3-8), 1A Harlan (6-6), 1A Lynn Camp (3-8), and Hancock County TN (2-9). A combined 14-31 (31% winning percentage).

The only semblance of a quality performance was losing to Somerset by 8 points and Pburg (who was very down last season as well) by 3.

vs. Corbin: Corbin
vs. Grant County: Mboro
vs. Pineville: Mboro
vs Bell County: Bell
vs. Harlan: Mboro
vs. Pikeville: Tossup...Lean Pikeville
vs. Union, VA: Union, VA
vs. LCA: Tossup...Lean LCA
vs. Danville: Danville
vs. Somerset: Somerset
vs. Lynn Camp: Mboro

I say anywhere between 4-6 and 6-4.

SURE WINS:
-Cupcake wins vs. 1A Harlan, Lynn Camp, and Pineville.

-Grant County is a larger school but possibly the worst team in their class.

SURE LOSSES:
-Bell will be down a little, but I anticipate a solid drubbing.
- Somerset will more than liekly win by a larger margin than last season.

PROBABLE LOSSES:
- Middlesboro was beat soundly jumping up in class to play Bourbon County and Morgan County... Corbin will be comparable to that Morgan County team last season just a little better.

-Danville should still outathlete Mboro

Toss-Ups:
- 1A Pikeville is the 4th 1A team Mboro drops down to play... I like Pikeville narrowly at home.

- LCA dominated Mboro last season but should be fairly comparable. Still like LCA.

The "success" of the season hinges on that LCA game. The opposite district is very weak in 2A so a 3 seed greatly increases their chance of winning in Round 1...still I cannot see Mboro winning the region or being a factor in the 2A Title Picture.

In my opinion, we catch Corbin off guard to start the season. They won't expect us to beat them and I believe we get that upset to start.

Then we get Grant County, who although is a larger school, is not very good. Like the guy said above. I think we beat them. We'll be 2-0 at that point.

Pineville is an easy win I think. 3-0.

Then we go into Bell.. although I think we will play them closer than we usually do, we will lose. Too good for us. 3-1.

Harlan we should beat fairly easily, they are not a very good team. 4-1.

I actually see us beating Pikeville. 1A school, and we should be able to win it. 5-1.

Union sucks.. Middlesboro easy improves to 6-1.

LCA will be majorly down, and we get them at home. Very good chance of winning, even though it will be close. I say win, 7-1

Danville and Somerset away are TOUGH games, we lose both in my opinion, and go to 7-3.

We end the season by beating a terrible Lynn Camp team and ending 8-3.

Maybe a little too optimistic, but that's my opinon.

Only 10 games allowed.
I think Corbin is a scrimmage.

I'll go with 6-4.

I don't think I realized just how bad Grant Co is so, I guess I will have to change the best case scenario for Middlesboro to 7-3, IMO.

I agree, I didn't realize the Corbin game didn't count.. or at least I don't think so, because according to the guy above no more than 10 games are allowed. So yeah, 7-3 is my prediction.

Yeah, only 11 weeks in the regular season and one of them has to be an off week.

Union HS is a consoldation of Powell Valley and Appalachia. I'm surprised to hear that they suck. I know the Appalachia Bulldogs used to be a helluva state power in SW Virginia. Powell Valley is where NFL stars Thomas and Julius Jones played in the 90's. The school is a consolation but uses the Powell Valley High School.

As for the Corbin game in the grid o rama, I think Corbin is a little better but won't be surprised either way. Win or lose, Middlesboro shouldn't put much into the outcome of this game. Jewell has never put an emphasis on winning scrimmages. Corbin has always seemed to use the two preseason scrimmages to simply work on wrinkles and play different kids (who often never see the field the rest of the year) in order to judge talent and potential depth at certain positions.

Middlesboro will have a good year. I think they could be 7-3 or 8-2 2nd in Dist to Somerset.
#14
I think the Jackets will finish 8-2, with a first-round playoff game at home.

If they can stay injury-free, they could be as good as any 2A team on the east side come mid-November. And their team is predominantly juniors!

No offense but I am just not seeing this. As I pointed out it seems the consensus is Mboro is about to suddenly be a State Title contender, and even though they do return a lot of experience, they simply were a bad team last year who may have went winless if not for a ridiculously easy non-District schedule where they beat up on BAD 1A teams and a Shelby Valley team who was probably one of the 5 worst teams in all of 2A.

I think they will be decent and competitive and certainly improved... but I see their ceiling this year as a "decent" team, but still nowhere near the level of play to be a threat to win their Region. If Middlesboro is truly a 2A contender then that class has got to be historically weak IMHO ( and I don't think that's the case).

Here is what we see. Middlesboro improved tremendously throughtout the season. Somerset, Danville and Prestonsburg were games that they gained the most. Actually leading all those games late. Now, they do have everyone back. Return all 11. The only senior was a WR that split time. With the line of thinking of just wins and losses I get the points some of you are making. That is not what you have to look at.

On a side note their QB has improved 100%. saw them at a 7-7 and he looked good.

With that line of thinking those other teams are not that strong...and we all know that is not true. Look past last year...it is a new year. I read the Danville paper and they had Middlesboro 2nd in district, behind Somerset.

They are going to have to prove it to a lot of you, I think they will. Some that actually saw them late understand.

Anytime you return your entire team obviously you will see a drastic improvement. I guess I am just stuck looking at the schedule and results while also weighing heavily on a loss to a Pburg team who I honestly think may have been younger/weaker than I have ever seen them.

Been a while since the Panthers have played Middlesboro. A lot of tradition between both schools, and should be a good game .
#19
I have to admit, I will be absolutely be dumbfounded if Middlesboro goes 8-2 this season! Would love to see it but, don't think it's possible. I think 7-3 is the best possible outcome for this team.

EKU I do see your point and they have to prove it. But, the same P'Burg team loss to Danville by 3 the next week. Danville was strong last year. So that Blackcat team team was not as weak as you may think.

I do believe that Somerset is the Class of the field in 2A in this area. Caldwell and NCC may be a little ahead.

This is why they play them. have fun and Good Luck.

I wish Middlesboro and Williamsburg would have been able to fit each other in. It would have been a good game. Jackets non district is a little soft other than Bell. Bell is probably only non district test for them. It would be nice to see them restart the Corbin series.
#22
Missed Pikeville. That will be a good test for the Jackets.

Corbin is the scrimage btw guys

Middlesboro is looking good , A.P has actually gotten taller got to be 6'6" and Pittman you can tell has hit the weights hard this off season , he looks like a beast. QB Edwards has impressed.

Grant County and getting that first win is our focus.

From what I've heard, Edwards has improved tremendously. The offense should be amazing this year..

Hopefully the defense can do something to and not just let teams walk all over us like we did last season.

Yellow Jackets must close out close games in 2013

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WYMT) - Our preseason high school interviews take us to Bell County where the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets are looking to bounce back from a 4-7 campaign in 2012.

The Jackets ended the season having lost four of their last five games, with three of those losses coming by less than 10 points, and head coach Randy Frazier says his team knows now what they must do better.

"We come off our last, three out of our last four games; Somerset, Danville, and Prestonsburg, we were all leading in the fourth quarter. Our kids just got to learn to close that deal," says Frazier. "Those are outstanding football programs. When you're leading in the fourth quarter, you probably should win the football game. They understand that and they have to build on that."

2013 WYMT Pigskin Preview: Middlesboro Yellow Jackets

MIDDLESBORO, Ky (WYMT) - The Middlesboro Yellow Jackets are coming into this season confident knowing they return almost everyone from last year's team.

"We only lost 1 kid a wide receiver off this football team, but any time you lose just one and bring everybody back it's going to bring a little confidence. Plus they've been thrown in the fire, freshmen, sophomores, juniors might want to say their young that's going to be seniors this year but they're not young. Ninety percent of this team was very young the past 2 years," said Head Coach Randy Frazier.

With another year of experience, this team believes they have improved enough in the off season to make a run in Class 2A District 7.

"Our district is really tough we travel a long way like this year we're going to Danville and Somerset and I just really hope that our young guys will be focused when they get off the bus. Last year against LCA I think our younger guys, had trouble and didn't wake up and realize that we're here and here to play," said Senior Lineman Jason Huddleston.

"We're a changed team, we've grown up stronger our line is strong. That was one weakness last year, our line couldn't body up with other people, but this year we're a whole lot stronger," said Senior Wide Receiver and Linebacker Austin Poindexter.

Senior Defensive End and Center Tyler Prater agreed with his teammates about the strengths of this team, "I think we're going to be really good. I mean we were good last year, we were just so young and not used to the game as much. Now that they got tempered in right they can come out and give it all they got and play hard."

The team kicks off the 2013 season against Grant County Braves.
