2013 Somerset Schedule
Gitback Coach Wrote:Good point; hadn't thought of that since I was just commenting generally on the Somerset program, not any coach, in particular. Granted, the Jumpers' current head coach was the Defensive Coordinator for the three regional title games you prefer to omit, but okay, here goes:

So since 2009 (not 1999), SHS has played in four (not seven) state semi-final games, and in those match-ups, the Jumpers are1-3 (not 1-6).

In their lone victory, they still gave up 12 points to their opponent (Sheldon Clark).

In their three (not six) losses, they have given up an average of 34.5 (not 37.5) points per game to their opponents. The fewest points surrendered in any of those 3 (not 6) losses was (still) just last year, when they allowed "only" 27 to Newport Catholic.

So basically, if a team gives up 37.5 points per game in regional title games, then that's an area for concern, but if they surrender only 34.5 per game, then . . . what?

Yeah, that changes the data drastically; thanks for your help.

Yeah, but out of those 3 loses only 1 game has yielded more than 28 pts. and that was 48 by the worst team of the 3. So your 34.3 pts per game are blown up so to speak by 1 game. And that game was tied 14 to 14 in the 3rd before the wheels came off and a lot of the reason for that was the lack of offense causing the defense to tire plus some stupid penalties toward the end of the game.

I hear that, but my only point is that ANY team surrendering 27, 28, and/or 48 points in state semi-final games is going to lose more of those contests than they win. Hold those opponents to 20 or fewer points, and the Jumpers' winning percentage in those "defining" games will surely rise.

A prior post suggested that the Somerset offense has thus far been the biggest factor in their inability to get over the hump, and I was simply examining/questioning that. It's a team game, so the O certainly bears its share of the responsibility (as do special teams--field position is critical), but when the defense consistently (and historically) surrenders those kinds of numbers in playoff games, the offense's margin for error is very slim, if it exists at all.

Trying to rationalize/explain away the gorilla in the room doesn't really seem to address the issue, but then again, we all know what happens to those of us who "don't learn from history." We get to review it.

Anyway, best of luck with the season; I'm rooting for the Jumpers to finally get off the schneid!

Somerset has had the better team in at least two of the four recent losses in semi-state appearances. If Storm Wilson's appendix doesn't burst 36 hours before kickoff of the Belfry game in 2010 I believe that game has a different outcome. As far as last year against NCC I still believe the Jumpers were the better football team, but New Cath had a good offensive scheme. Lets not forget that SHS was giving up 11 pts per game on average for the season going into that game. We have nothing to blame but ourselves for that loss, and for many of the big losses we have suffered historically. SHS is on the cusp, they are good on both sides of the football this year, if they stay injury free they will be the team to beat in the east.

I think Madison Southern is a possibility but coach Lucas has not contacted anyone yet. It's hard to pick someone up this late and the addition of another 5a team is not ideal because I think Madison Southern will be much better than people will give them credit to be! We are definitely playing Belfry week 2 at Cam Stadium! Will be a great game. My belief is that we will work something out with Madison Southern and I think that will make Somerset's schedule one of toughest in 2a. Can't wait to get the dead period over with and get some FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ON!!!!

In my experiences, if a schedule is not complete by now it prob. will stay the way it is. Most people are not too excited about adding teams this late. I wish Somerset had a 10 game slate but who knows 9 games may work out for the best. Let's get this Dead Pd. over and go to Work!!!!

You are right cellking , there will only be 9 games this year.

I really felt this was the way it would go. May not be a bad thing, gives you time to heal before the play-offs start, if need be. Looking FWD. to season.
In my opinion, Somerset's biggest game on the schedule is against Glasgow.

Glasgow is underestimated by this whole site in 2A and no one has any idea as to what they have. They return 16 starters (all seniors outside of a RB). They are literally the only thing standing in Caldwell County's way to get back to the ship.

If Somerset beats Glasgow, then I believe they can make it to the ship and have a chance at the title.

I think Glasgow has what it takes to knock off CC and open up a huge possibility for the Jumpers to win a title this year. (or whoever comes out of the east)

The only starter for Somerset that i can think of that wont be a senior is the QB, but he also has a year under his belt. I honestly hope Glasgow beats Caldwell. The stars may finally align for Somerset *knocks on wood*
Have a good year
Dead Period is finally DEAD!!! Lets play some FOOTBALL!!!
Shondue Wrote:Dead Period is finally DEAD!!! Lets play some FOOTBALL!!!

Yea me to. I'm looking for a big year from Lang, Cam, Hatcher, Skidmore and the rest of The Jumpers. It's a tough Schedule but these kids will be up to the challenge. Good Luck to Jumpers!!!
CellKing or BD against who, when and where are the scrimmages?
Somerset @ Montgomery Co. Aug. 16th
Is that the only one they are having, because they play in week 0? It would have been nice to get in two scrimmages since they only get 9 games.

If a team plays week 0 they can only have 1 scrimmage. Never thought that was quite fair. Teams do have a choice so I guess they want it that way. I always wanted both scrimmages.
Are the Jumpers going to any of the 7 on 7's?
Jumper Dad Wrote:Are the Jumpers going to any of the 7 on 7's?

Jumpers won the 7v7 at Bryan Station last Saturday, without Lange. All the jumpers looked good, especially Chevy, Hatcher and Doan. Gonna be a good year offensively, speed was insane, they were by far the fastest team at the 7v7.
Who was at the Bryan Station 7 on 7? Who did Jumpers go against?
Somerset has some very nice talent returning at the skill positions, what can we look forward to up front on the line?

On the Defensive side of the ball what will be the Jumpers' strengths and weaknesses? I though Somerset was a very sound team last year defensively.

Jumpers will be good up front on both sides of the football. Kagen Skidmore, Alex mcguffy, Jon Perdue, Hayden fox, just a few names (seniors) that will likely see significant minutes defensively. Jumpers will be good once again defensively next year: they lost 4 starters from last years state semi game.
Any truth to the rumor that expected starting quarterback Castle Hatcher may transfer before the beginning of the season? And also did the Jumpers go 0-4 at a weekend passing camp? Who was quarterback and which teams beat the Jumpers? I would think with that incredible team speed that they would be almost unbeatable at a passing camp with Hatcher at quarterback.

Hatchers not going anywhere, and yes the Jumpers went 0-4 at Henry Clay on Saturday, however they had what seemed like 50 dropped balls on the day and they lost by a combined 11 if u add up all four games. Jumpers played terrible, but passing league is definitely not an accurate measure of how good a team will be in the regular season. Junk formations, leaking backs out directly over the center after linebackers are already in their drops... Little "back yard"ish. No need to be alarmed, jumpers will be fine. They won the Bryan Station passing tournament 2 weeks ago.

Glad to hear that Hatcher was there. I wasn't too concerned about the 0-4, unless the Jumpers had to play another quarterback. If the problem was dropped passes I know that won't be an ongoing problem. Good report.
I would be totally shocked if Hatcher went anywhere this year. He would be hard pressed to find a better group of Skilled people to play with. This bunch has Speed to burn. You know what they say about Speed. Speed Kills and in Football it can make a Def. look like a bunch of idiots.
Come on August 23rd!!!
Now that the Hatcher rumor has been laid to rest, what other bumps do we face in the road?
