I agree with most of your picks!! Don't agree with mills or Jewell being top ten coaches. What have either of them ever won?? Good coaches but not top ten..

I thought Caoch Thompson was the coach at Wayne Co? And I am not sure how Johnny Hines would not be in the Top 10. Has done a great job building a perennial Region Contender at a school that has not really ever had success in football. I agree most of the names on her though. That is one thing about Mountain Football. A ton of great coaches and some great football!!!

Black has a losing record at Whitley, surely you could at least post a coach with a winning record :biglmao: there goes your credibility

Coach Jewell has won many district and regional championships, and was state runner up once, but being a Knox central fan you dont know about that since your school has never even won a single district in their history :biglmao: yeah coach Jewell belongs on the top ten list

I think JB Donahue needs to be on someones list. Does the most he can with what he has every year.

Give this guy the talent some of these other guys have had and you will see championships in my opinion.

OBI could have put together a team and won that 2A district Corbin was in.

It was easier for him to win 10-11 games at year at Wburg.
Not so easy against 5A competetion Confusednicker:

Thatd be like putting Herron in the top 10 because of winnin 8 or 9 games a year at Wburg.

This list could only be done by putting coaches in different classes together.
From 1-10, the usual suspects are going to show up. Atleast 1-5 anyways.

You're right; I meant to type "Thompson" for Wayne County instead of giving Coach Mills two jobs, lol. Thanks.

Riutg Coaches that can coach can coach at any level classes deal with numbers of talent example just because Haywood is successful in his class does not mean he couldn't win in class A Just because Herron is successful with his air attack at one of the smallest schools in the state to imply that he couldn't take that same system to any large school and expect the same results is flat out wrong. I submit to you to be successful year after year like Herron is, a coach would have to be a better coach to do this at the smaller school level. Why? I t takes years to develop a system where you have to have highly skilled players every year and Williamsburg does that about every year. (quarterback and receivers) it is much easier to coach run over them, around them, bruit strength, than to teach them skills. One other thing coaches who can do this with success usually move up to the larger school for higher pay. To Say the number of players or students you have has any thing to do with your ability to coach and WIN year in and year out is Flat out wrong. Run IT up the gut that post surprise me

With that weak 2a district anyone could have won that at Corbin, now that their in a harder one just can't get it done.

Dixon is a good coach. He's in my top 10.

Randy Frazier is a good coach, too. You seem to assume that "wins" always equate with "good coaching" and that "good coaches" consistently win. Sometimes, yes. Always, no.

I've watched football in southeastern KY for over 40 years. Some of the best coaches I've ever seen in this area retired with career records around .500. They toiled for years, decades even, at schools with severe limitations. Many took those jobs (and stayed) for non-football (i.e., more important) reasons. Some simply coached at the wrong places at the wrong times. Every story varies.

If we're really honest about it, though, there is no universal standard for defining a "winner" (not even the scoreboard). Besides, coaching at a "winning program" is always easier, but not always as meaningful or satisfying as doing more with less at places where those "winners" would never cast their shadow. Surely, we parents and fans in eastern Kentucky recognize this even more than most.

Winning isn't the only measure of "quality.".And honestly, it shouldn't even be in the top five criteria. I guess it just depends on how one defines "best coaching."

Sorry about my Wayne County typo, but yes, if one considers Wayne a mountain team, then Thompson's in my top 10.

I get that my list isn't in line with yours. I don't care. Post your own (if you haven't already). It likely won't match mine. And again, I won't care.

Ive seen it time and time again.
Some schools you just cant win at no matter how well youve done or who you are. Black brought in the same passing attack (that Herron learned from black) and tried to use it at Whitley. After posting a couple of 2-8 years, he switched to the option and won district, region, and went 12-2.

Its about what kind of kids youve got and what offense you can use with them. Good coaches figure that out. Most coaches around here have come to accept the fact that they can pass or they cant. Others dont know how to teach the passing game so they dont bother. Black had a passing machine while at Wburg, and Greers numbers there prove that. Herron still uses most of Blacks plays today with his own little tweaks to them.
With that said, my point is, even though he is a passing mastermind, he knows he cant do it at Whitley. Id love to see it, and we have kids who can throw and catch the ball, but its the other teams thats mor difficult to pull it off against and all you do is end up throwing picks.
#30
First I think the offense ran at Williamsburg during coach Blacks reign was ran and developed by Coach Woods. The reason it did not work at Whitley was because they did not take the time to develop the skill position kids to run the system. I mean you can not take a receiver that has just blocked all his life and and a quarterback that has just handed the ball off all of his life and expect them to win the game for you the next year. It takes time to develop that system and that is what Coach Herron has done at Williamsburg. If you go to a flag football game at Williamsburg you see them throwing the ball. It is the same system from flag football all the way up to highschool, that is what I think separates a great football program from a mediocre program.
