Class A 2013...lord is it August yet?

64SUR Wrote::howdy: keep your eyes on the score board this year our schedule is just as tough as anybody in 1a in the east will prepare us better for playoff.against them dang hazard bulldogs. hazard has my respects. untill then pikeville, raceland and fairview go at it.meet you all in williamsburgs Confusedmoke:

My hat is off to your commitment 64sur. You pick up right where you left off each and every year. I commend you on that.

Lets take a brief look at the schedules of Pikeville, Raceland, Fairview, and Williamsburg:

Raceland Schedule Analysis:
Plays up in class with ever NON-DISTRICT game. Not only that but is playing quality upper class opponents, by playing Ashland(hung with Highlands in last years playoffs), Lawrence Co(solid school on the rise again), Dawson-Bryant(Along the lines of Russell as far as talent goes), OH, and Ironton, OH(Has pretty much dominated the OH/KY games over the last decade. The only teams on the schedule that I think could and should be replaced are East Carter and Greenup Co. Couple that with having Fairview already in their district and Nicholas County, and you have a tough schedule.

Fairview Schedule Analysis:
Very happy to see what they have scheduled this year. Adding Hazard(we all know who they are), Lawrence Co(already commented on them), and James N. Gamble from Cincinatti, OH(dont' know much about them but they are a OH private school). Plus that have to play Raceland in the district. Still give the edge to Raceland between these two in the strength of schedule battle, but Fairview made major strides with that this year. Hats of to them.

Pikeville Schedule Analysis:
Lets face facts, their district is terrible. If they lose a district game on a DOWN year, then something is bad wrong. The other teams have just fallen apart recently. Prestonsburg(very competitive each season), Hazard(again, we know who they are), Sheldon Clark(very fast, talented), Belfrey(BELFREY...nuff said), and Middlesboro as their non district games. Probably the stoutest schedule on the east side of the 1A bracket.

Williamsburg Schedule Analysis: Again, their district is very weak. Their non district schedule includes Halls, TN(haven't heard amazing things about them), North Laurel(Not a power, but a bigger school), Pike County Central(also on fairviews schedule, a bigger school, but not a consistently strong program), same can be said about Harrison Co, and Wayne Co.

Now, I don't see how any one can look at the schedules and say Williamsburg has just of a tough schedule as anyone. I rate them like this:

Pikeville/Raceland(Pikeville slight edge due to some mtn-esque teams.)

Hazard(weak district but plying mtn teams like Breathitt, belfry and Pikeville puts them ahead of fairview)

Fairview(much stronger than in the past...but not as tough as they could probably handle)

Williamsburg (weak district, and over all weak non district schedule)

Now...feel free to list your arguments. with FACTS...and not "come and get us"..."see you in BG"...."you will see" bs comments.

To play Devil's advocate..Williamsburg has substantially upgraded their schedule and I don't think you gave them enough credit.

North Laurel is not a power..but they are a very big school and have improved immensely in recent years

Wayne County is a team who IMO may be the 2nd or 3rd best team in 3A entering the season. With all fairness, it is easy to overlook them has they have historically been a very average program, but this may be the best Wayne County team in recent memory. With that said, I expect Wayne County to lay a beating on Wburg similar to the beating Pikeville will take when they play Belfry... a comparatively similar team.

Harrison County is a weak team and Pike Central has had consistency issues and appear to be one year away from returning to being competitive and a Top 10 caliber team. Nonetheless,,,, in comparison to last season Wburg has to be applauded and their schedule really isn't that far off from the other schools and may actually be stronger than Fairview's.

^^^Scotty forgot Russell on Pikeville's schedule. You are right though, W'burg has upgraded their schedule. It will make them better. Williamsburg needs to develop a running game and some more playmakers. Look at their game against Hazard. QB accounted for 48 out of 61 plays (29 pass, 19 run) and 208 of their 254 yards (159 pass, 49 run). They have a fine QB, but teams will be keying on him and he won't beat the teams Scotty has ranked above them unless he has a BUNCH of help.

Thank you for that input. I didn't know about Wayne Co looking as good as they did. Looked at some numbers and returning players from them and I can see where u are coming from. As far as North Laurel goes, they are a big school, I will give you that. So sometimes it is hard to judge because they don't really do a whole lot inside of their district if I am not mistaken. I still can't say that their schedule is stronger than Fairviews. Now, a lot of this is yet to be seen because we are ALL going off of last year and history. Which is all we have to go by...thus the statement of...Is it August yet?

In regaurds to the Russell game being on Pikeville's schedule. I can't really give much of an argument. Raceland beat Russell soundly, the last few years. Outside of the first year of the Rail City Bowl, Raceland defeated them in every match up. I have spoken with a few Russell players and they have all said the same thing. "Uh Oh"...seems that many of the seniors aren't coming to work outs, and it looks slower and weaker than in years past. Which is scary because they haven't had a really strong team for a few years.

I think its somewhat comedic that all of us "non champs" get on here and argue about strength of schedule lol

Class A is Mayfield's to lose. Everybody is playing for second place.

Williamsburg this year will be playing as tough a schedule as any 1A school in the state. 6for sure is dead on. I don't know if any school in any class was as young as the Williamsburg team last year 1 the QB Sizemore was a junior 2 the running back Patrick was A Sophomore 3 the center was Jeffords Senior 4 Right guard was Loy A senior 5 left guard Lamoury sophomore 6 right tackle Helton 300 lb Sophomore (maybe best oline man in mountains) very fast. 7 Dunn left tackle freshman. 8 Skylor Griffin WR sophomore. 9 Cory Shelton WR Sophmore 10 Mike Rose R Sophomore 11 Stone Hughlett Freshman Kicker Brent Patrick Jefferson Patrick twin Sophomore. That was a young team 2 Seniors 1 Junior 7 Sophomores 2 Freshmen can anyone out there beat that. Williamsburg should be very good they have 3 or 4 excellent transfers.
#42
Pikeville plays Belfry, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Sheldon Clark, Middlesboro, and Russell...tougher than W'burg's schedule.

Not to mention Mayfield, Beechwood, Hazard, Raceland, and others have tougher schedules.

:biglmao: ekualum05 what are you calling Wayne co. Going to lay down a beating on Williamsburg 1pt,2pt or 30pt. I'm predicting Williamsburg by 20 pts. :insane: 64sur Confusednicker:

The combine at Union College had some good teams there. they were from Wayne co., Corbin had several boys there Bell High had most of the team, Lincoln Co. was there Estill Co was there Knox Co. had the most Lynn Camp and several other schools attended along with Williamsburg. They had verticle jump. 40 dash, short shuttle, medicine ball heave, and the bench press. Williamsburg won 40 ( Patrick) the short shuttle (Patrick) 2nd place short shuttle (Zack Sanders) 3rd place short shuttle (Huskey) 2nd place bench press (Helton) several 4th pace finishes. Dalton Sizemore was not with the team he could have won the bench press going away.
#45
I left out a big time player for the Burg The tight end Logan Hamblin, Williamsburg only lost 4 players to graduation,

Agree with this. Pikeville should go deeper in the playoffs this year, taking in consideration the talent that returns. How deep? BG. would be the goal, but that's a long way off, and a lot of hurdles to cross. The coaching is there, experience gained by a young team last year is there, talent is abundant, playing with heart is a huge factor, the numbers are there. Just have to put all the pieces together. Imo, it's going to be a fun season in Pikeville.

You guys strength of schedule is better than last year. However it is nowhere near as strong as Mayfields or Beechwood.
#51
Here is the deal with the strength of schedule. It's great to play these good teams. But if you can't win any of those games sometimes it an hurt more than it helps. Look at what has happened at East Ridge as an example. Last year pikeville went 5-5 in the regular season. Winning 3 district games, beat Paintsville, and cannot remember other win right now. Anyway, they had zero quality wis!! Zero!! Went into the playoffs and upset a Raceland team who overlooked them. That is still only 1 quality win. Pikeville plays in a very bad district and that is not there fault. I just do not think Raceland overlooks them again this year.
#52
I look at the whole The strength of schedule thing a little different. Much like Cardinal, i look at it as if u can win those or atleast compete, they make no difference. I would like to see Raceland play Ashland/Ironton around week 3 and 5. Rather than first game and last game. I do however have the advantage of seeing plYing up like this be a big advantage. But it has always ended the same for Raceland. Get into the playoffs somewhere between 7-3 and 10-0 then win two games and get beaten in the region. This years seniors have taken alot of that and i know thu r hungry. I just hope they can use last years losses as motivation. Against Ashland they had 7 turnovers, 3 of which came on what should have been scoring drives. Ashland converted 4 turnovers into touchdowns. Give the Rams 2 tds and take away 2 of ashlands scores from to's...its a tie ball game. The loss of Beach in the Fairview game was detrimental. He was avg 6 yds a carry when he came out. He was on pace to rush for around 1500 yds last year at that point but never really bounced back. Against Pikeville, they over looked them. Cant do that against a historically deep playoff running teams. We shall see what kind of attitude the rams can bring to the table. God i am ready for august.
#53
Give me a break on Raceland overlooking Pikeville. Pikeville was the better team. The game was a dogfight throughout. How long do you overlook your opponent in the middle of a dogfight? Then Pikeville won in overtime. So after a 4 quarter dogfight that was tied, was Raceland overlooking Pikeville going into overtime? Was Raceland overlooking Pikeville when Raceland got the ball first in overtime and couldn't score in their 4 downs? Were they still overlooking Pikeville when Pikeville then got the ball and scored on the first play to win the game?

Give me a break.
#54
Ok heres ur break. Raceland did over look Pikeville. Imo from the game plan on, Raceland got got on their heels. In the first half they got by on god knows what. Completely flat w no emotion. Which i have said many times was their greatest downfall last year. In the 2nd half of the ball game Pikeville was the better team. They mad better adjustments than raceland did. I have done nothing but praise Pikeville for that and commend them since that game finished. They caught a descent Raceland team looking past them. That obvious since in the first half Neither team really seem to think Pikeville had a shot. When they were only down 2 scores at half, it gave the panthers a desire. Hats off to them on not goving up. Thats a difference in a team that is historically atleast winning regional championships. Theres ur break.
#55
LOL...
So Raceland still overlooked Pikeville in the overtime? haha
Whatever makes you feel better. Best team won.
#56
Idk what else to say other than what ive said, In the 2nd half THE BETTER TEAM WON. Can u honestly say that in the first half Pikeville was the better team? The first half Raceland played like the deserved the victory with out playing a down and Pikeville acted like there wasn no point in even trying. What ever the coaches said in the Pikeville locker room at half time worked. What ever was said in the Raceland locker room made no difference what so ever. Raceland did what they have done for the last several season, put themselves in position to win that illusive regional title, then pour it down the drain with over conservative play, over looking a team, or lack of urgency. This coming from a Raceland fan, A die hard one at that. The Rams remain a solid program until they can atleast put some regional titles up.

Im sure Fairview will bring in another outstanding recruiting class.. Until KHSAA cracks down on them, the Eagles will continue to keep the WV recruiting pipeline open despite the unbearable stench of illegality that encompasses the streets of Westwood during the fall. No respect for KHSAA after last seasons rulings.
#58
I have come to look at it this way. Yes it may be unfair, yes it may be a loop whole filled, daddy is the sheriff and papaws the judge kind of deal, BUT, teams have to come to realize it by now. Its going to happen. We may not be able to control what they do, but teams can control what THEY AS A TEAM can do. Deal with it, prepare, control ur own team and lets drop it.
