Robbie Shivel might be a little sore after Monday night, but it was Fairview that left the game battered and bruised.
Boyd County belted out 11 hits to go along with Dylan Grimm's complete-game gem as the Lions roared past Fairview, 14-0, in the opening round of the 64th District Tournament at Ashland's Alumni Field. The game lasted five innings.
Shivel was beaned three times in his four plate appearances. The Lions' leadoff hitter also added a two-run single and scored three runs.
Boyd County coach Brandon Ramsey said the senior wants to get on base any way he can.
“The last person I am concerned with is Robbie,” said Ramsey. “He has been beaned quite a bit this year, but he is a tough kid. As a leadoff hitter, we need to get him on base. He will be ready to play (tonight).”
Boyd County will take on heated rival Ashland for the 64th district title tonight at 6.
Even though Boyd County had convincingly swept the season series from the Eagles, 21-0 and 14-3, the Lions did not want to get caught looking ahead.
“We talked about that. We have to play one game at a time,” said Ramsey when asked about his team's focus. “That is the one thing we stressed about the postseason. We had to win tonight to get to tomorrow.”
Shivel’s teammates also found their way on base due to Fairview's erratic pitching.
Fairview's trio of Kyle Stormes, Austin Harris and Jesse Menshouse combined for eight walks and hit four batters.
Stormes had early control issues as Boyd County manufactured an early run in the first inning without a hit.
The Lions (19-15) scored eight runs in the second inning as it batted around, sending 14 batters to the plate.
After consecutive walks forced an Eagles pitching change, a Shivel single plated Corey Sublett and Jordan Smith.
Jacob Barnwell laced a single into center field for an RBI and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Cook.
Billy McCoy singled in a run and Zane Purscelley forced in another by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
With the bases still full of Lions, Shivel took another one for the team as a fastball plunked his hip, sending Sublett home to complete the Lions’ eight-run inning.
Barnwell and Grimm contributed back-to-back RBI doubles as Boyd County batted around the lineup again in the fourth, scoring five runs to put the game out of reach.
Barnwell went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Grimm reached base four times as he went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs.
Grimm produced another stellar pitching performance, allowing only two hits. The sophomore tallied eight strikeouts and one free pass. More importantly, the Lions were able to rest its pitching staff for tonight's championship game.
“We have a lot of options for (tonight),” claimed Ramsey. “After the last game we played against Ashland, it will be good to have those options.”
The Tomcats won both meetings this year, including a 12-inning marathon last month that Ashland won 3-2.
“Hopefully we will come out focused and ready to play,” said Ramsey. “It should be a good game.”
Fairview finished its season at 5-20.
