Not one NBA Star was playing in this tournament anywhere. Remember UK's Most painful loss in history happened because Rick didnt think to guard the inbounds man. I'm sorry but I'm just not buying pitino as a top 20 all time coach cause he won a title with arguably the best talent ever assembled and then again in a year where college basketball was so down Wichita State was the best team he played.
Are you serious? Name 20 coaches that are better. If Pitino is not in the top 20, so that means Calipari would not crack the top 50 all time.

Thats your opinion. I have mine. To me Oregon, duke, and Michigan were better than wichita. If you cant see him as an all time top 10 coach something isnt right much less a top 20 coach. Only coach to take 3 teams to final four. He has been to 3 while at UL now with little talent. I just dont see how you make an argument. To me college basketball was great this season! Everybody was even. Which once again, that comes down to coaching. Just saying. And down 16 to Syracuse in BE championship and ended up beating them by 17. Yes thats a heck of a coaching move against a HOF coach.

Rick is good, but top 5 of all time? No way. Top 20 yea. He's had more talented teams at Louisville but didn't win it. You put this team in any other year and they would be lucky to get to the final four, let alone win a title. That's not a knock, just the facts. Great coach, just not top 5 in my book.Practically the same team last year and they were in the Final 4. So Cal sure doesnt make top 50. NO Coach has had as much talent as him and he only has one championship to talk about. I mean 5 first round draft picks and he got to the Elite 8

And Pitino had how many until this one?
And he got that with a team full of NBA players at UK.
If Calipari gets his 2nd next year I guess they are even?

Look at all the talent Cal has had. Im not saying Coach P didnt have talent at UK because he did. Cal has had the number one recruiting class how many years? I think you all are just hating. Haters gonna hate no matter what.

IMHO, thats not success. I feel if your going to coach for 30 years you should be in the 7-8 range when your coaching powerhouse schools.
I think Cal will get three or four, which for 30 years isnt that good either, so in all, every coach can be considered a failure for the most part.
If that is the case then the only truly successful coach is John Wooden. Only 2 schools have 7-8 championships TOTAL. Let alone by one coach. There are over 300 D-I schools in basketball. To win 3-4 is a remarkable achievement given that the championships are decided in a 68 team, single elimination tournament. If they cut it down to 16 teams and did it in a playoff format I think you'd see coaches win 7-8 championships at a powerhouse program. The way it is it is just too hard to win them like that even when you have the best team.

For most of the season Duke and Michigan were better. But not in this tourney they weren't. Also I don't think cal is a top 20 all time coach not has had the career pitino has had to this point. But after they both retire cal does have a chance to pass him. Remember cal's final fours at UMass and Memphis were vacated but he was found to have no knowledge in both instances so he himself has led three programs to the final four even if the NCAA says otherwise. I'm working on my top 20 list for you guys but some right now I Would put ahead of pitino. Coach K,Rupp,Phog Allen,John Wooden,Dean Smith,Denny Crum,Roy Williams,Bill Self,John Wooden,Jim Calhoun, John Boheim, Bobby Knight, Bill Self, I will try to finish my list when I have time.

I think Coach Pitino is a top 10 all-time coach. I hated it when he left UK and I've rooted for Louisville when they don't play UK ever since he came back to the college game. That being said I don't think you can ding Cal too much for not having more championships. If not for some missed free throws and a wild three pointer he'd have had one at Memphis. Also, trying to win with a freshman dominated team is much different than winning with a more experienced roster like Pitino had this past season. Honestly, I prefer Pitino's style of coaching to Cal's but given the current state of college basketball I understand why Cal does what he does.

Bill Self is a heck of coach. I don't know if he is good enough to take up 2 spots in your top 20 but he's good.

Bill Self? Really? How is Bill Self's resume better than Pitino's?

Oh yeah I'm hating. It's UK vs Loserville. What else would be expected.
I am one of the few that didnt like Pitino when he was at UK. Great coach but a world class prick.
I never was a big Calapari fan either but you have a national championship, two final fours and an elite eight in 4 years. Probably the best recruiting class ever coming in. That's hardly a disappointing record besides last year.
Pitino to me is one of the top 5 coaches ever but I still don't like him. Given time Calapari may end up there too.

Louisville has had back to back final fours and a championship. Made the tournament too. Oh and alot less talent than Cal has had. Which I cant hold that against Cal. He is a all time great recruiter. My opinion it isnt legal but still. I dont think Cal could have got Siva, Russ, or Gorgui to the level they are today. He sure couldnt have led them to 2 Final 4's and a championship. That distinguishes coaches from recruiters.

Some people wearing blue shades an cant admit Pitino is a great coach. He has coached 30 years. Anybody that coached 30 years should have 7 national championships apparently. So the only successful coach in history is John Wooden. I think this pretty much sums up what happened

I think you're selling Cal short there. Just because he has a lot of one and done players doesn't mean players don't improve under his coaching. Just see how much Harrelson, Miller, Liggins, Lamb and Jones improved from when he first coached them. He just doesn't have many of them stick around 3-4 years.

That is speculation and something that cannot be proven.
Going by the numbers they are pretty even. If I'm not mistaken I remember Calipari's UMass team that wasn't nearly as talented giving Pitino's 96 UK team all kinds of fits.

Its the same way i look at baseball.
Why is .300 a good batting average? Thats hitting the ball 3 out of every 10 times. Thats horrible IMO.

All im saying is when you look at the big picture, winning one championship in 30 or 40 years of coaching, IMHO, is horrible.
Take Tubby for example. He was given an oppertunity at some major schools and only has one, with players he didnt recruit. Thats just plain bad.
