Just seen on twitter that Breathitt County is not gonna renew Coach Fugate's contract.
Why?
Why?

Wonder if it was the rumors about him going to Letcher Central with Holcomb if that job came open.

This could be a start to that rumor BUT to my knowledge, Letcher isn't open and might not be open.

Any chance Fugate ends up somewhere else or do you think he is finished?

He's not finished. He'll be at somewhere, just where at is the problem! I don't think he will be at Letcher, I was there for the regional tourney and heard nothing about LCC coming open.
Now for Breathitt County, who takes over that spot. Doug Noble, again?

Hate to hear this, great guy

Could see Noble if he wants it, but does he want it? Do they want to look outside for some new blood? It all depends on what the administration wants.

I honestly can't see them going out of county or out of the school system to hire a coach. Unless something changes they will be staying in the school system for football

Not surprising at all really. Can't say that either Fugate or Holcombe were happy with the way the state was running things.
It's also no surprise that with the money those two were making, and deservedly so, that the state made things uncomfortable to them to the point one left and the other was not renewed. Finances are priority number one right now for the state management team.
With this news don't be surprised if Noble doesn't look around and see if he can find a nice opening to fill somewhere and take Wes with him. Breathitt's roster will be hit hard by graduation this year and Wes will be one of only two varsity players returning that played any significant minutes. There is also the possibility that he takes the head coaching job again too.

^ If it comes down to him and he turns it down, where does Breathitt look then?

Also just heard that they are doing away with all elementary sports in Breathitt County.

Heard Kyle Moore wouldn't be back teaching next year either. Will he still be the football coach?
04-10-2013, 10:56 PM
The same superintendent at Breathitt that ran off Holcomb and now the basketball coach is the same one who ran Tom Larkey out of Rockcastle. I had always heard he was not for sports and didn't like to be second.

If he is not teaching then no. Was told a while back that the new football coach would have to be someone already on the payroll and working for the district. If Kyle is not brought back as PE teacher and coach then I have no idea who they will get.

No elementary sports???

Sounds like the Good Ole Boys may have to have a talk with the Sup like they did in the good ole days. Take out Elementary Sports and you are looking at a whole lot of pissed off people. That is STUPID. Sports shape a lot of kids lives.
04-11-2013, 09:20 AM
Why would you do away with Elementary Sports? This guy needs to be replaced before he puts Breathitt in a worse spot than the school system is already in. There isn't any thing positive in Breathitt County as we speak, so why would you take something positive away from the children.

Apparently the superintendent doesnt want sports to succeed. He ruined rockcaslte football and must have same agenda in Breathitt, That is awful to do away with elem sports,

Looks to me that they could be doing this inhouse since I haven't found a posting of the position yet.

what reason was given that he was fired or made to quit

I know it was at least being considered by the super to do away with high school sports as well as early as January.
The school system will be going back to a k-6, middle school, and high school setup next year so the end of elementary sports may just be k-6 not k-8. Either way it is still a bad thing to do for the kids in the system. Should be a lot of transfers out of the county to neighboring school districts next year if this goes through.

Football position will be filled internally as well. Super already stated no one from outside the district would be considered for the position. Basketball will almost certainly be the same.

Who will be the next coach? I am worried.

While I have no horse in this race, I think that it is a shame to eliminate programs that are mainly in place for the enjoyment of the kids. Does he anticipate that kids are simply going to job the academic team or has he eliminated that as well?

Saw this somewhere else. Seems the intern super makes 35,000 a month from Breathitt plus his retirement from the state. He is the one robbing Breathitt, but if that is what Breathitt wanted I guess they got it.

Mr. Hammonds is very highly thought of by most people associated with the Rockcastle Co school system. It's important to note that he was not hired by the local school system. He was hired by the state dept of education to manage the school system while it is under state control. It appears the Breathitt co school system is in quite the quandary. Hammonds, I would imagine, was hired to get the system back on a firm academic and financial footing. Athletics are not the priority in this crisis situation.

Hammonds may be a great guy but taking out Elementary Sports is just flat out STUPID. Athletes are usually your best students.

Elementary schools and coaches have already been informed that sports are out. No word on the high school and if they cancel high school sports, that would have to be the first time in history.
Parents and coaches are talking with Parks Dept to try to get community leagues established.
