Who are the teams and players to watch in the 7th region?

Looks like Ballard will be the top team, I hear Male should be solid. What's some players to watch in this region?

This will most likely be a much more competitive and more interesting Region than the 6th or 8th.
Ballard is the off the list favorite to win, but I'm not so convinced. I do think they will have the most firepower at the plate with Adell, Hull and senior Walker, but they did lose their top hitter in Gray, and from talking to some folks that know more than I do about it, they're pretty young overall, whether that's good or bad? We'll see. I'd say Ballard's biggest issue is pitching. Adell is a more than capable pitcher, but how will she fare carrying the load with little backup, and trying to slap and steal bases also? With Bullitt East, Old Co., and O'bor Cath on the schedule in March, everyone should see fairly soon what the Bruins are all about. Walker will probably be the leader this year.
Male is probably the biggest mystery right now. As everyone in the Commonwealth knows, they have a new coach. The biggest discussion I've read on other forums has been whether or not his ways will work at a public school. The few parents I know are staying tight lipped, but seem pretty enthusiastic. Another pretty young team overall, but they had a lot of seniors last year, so that makes sense. They have two returning senior pitchers in Miozza and Miller, as well as Wireman, who should see circle time also. I would say they are deepest in pitching for the Region. Bellermine signee, Ginter, is also a very solid returning Sr. From looking at posted schedules, I'd say they may have one of, if not the, toughest schedule in the state. That's not surprising considering the new coach.
Eastern has Sr. pitcher Smith. She is a fantastic pitcher, and should shine this year. If they really are as young as their KHSAA roster shows, it will take more than a great pitcher to get them through. They really stumbled late in season last year, and will probably struggle this year.
Assumption has two great long ballers in Nitzken and Tarquinio, and a very good coach, but they really lost a lot in pitching with Foley graduating. Also, heard they had another pitcher not return. I've seen Nitzken pitch before, and she's not bad, but don't think she can hold off a team like Ballard, Male or CAL. They will need a lot of offense.
Sacred Heart starts the season with a W, and has a pretty good pitcher in Holden, and two strong Srs. in Hammer and Russell. Overall, they're fairly thin, but could actually end up finishing 3rd in the Region. It may be a stretch, but it would not shock me.
CAL graduated Foster, which for them was a lot. Cook and Powell are better than average players, and they will probably end up over .500, but nothing more at end of the year.
The rest won't make any noise in the Region.
My best guess is that Male will make their first trip to the State out of this Region carried by the strength of their pitching, coaching.

I think Mac Henderson for Ballard will be one of the top hitters, she's the granddaughter of Jim Henderson, who has coached some of the best 10u and 12u travel teams around. You are right,. Ballard is just average with pitching.

I had heard she was gone back in the summer from their Diamonds team, and wasn't going to be back for the HS team. Guess I heard right.
Texted with a parent from Male Sat. while they were in TN. Guess they went 3-1 in scrimmages down there, and apparently their pitchers really lit it up only giving up 2 earned runs all day. Said they lost to Beech, who's nationally ranked in the first game all from unearned runs. I bet that drove someone crazy.
Wonder when or, even if, Ballard and Wiseman will bury the hatchet. Thought she could turn into something as an 8th grader.

I traveled to the tournament in Meade County this weekend to watch some 6th & 7th Region teams. I was able to see Male play Collins, Butler and Holy Cross.
Male's team is no longer a mystery to me as I had stated in my first post. I was able to watch 3 of their games, and see that they have a very solid team, that can hit and overall an athletic looking team.
They had one player, Mudd, hit 2 HRs during the games I watched, and a 3rd in another game, I was told. Wireman was very impressive at the plate and in the circle. I had never seen her pitch prior to these games, and all I can say is Wow! She dominated a very good Holy Cross team and shut down Collins, other than a nice hit by Rankin. Male's other pitcher Miozza looked good against a decent Butler team. I had seen her in the past, and she was about the same. The other pitcher I saw for them that came in against Collins was fairly average.
Bloomer stayed relatively calm, that I saw, and the parents I was talking with say they are very happy to have him coaching their kids. I didn't stay around for the last game against Mercy, though, which I was told was a thumping.
Looking at the scores from Ballard and Eastern this weekend, this first week of games has created more questions than answers for Region 7.
Not so for the 6th, except for, in my opinion, who will battle for 2nd place, Bullitt East or Holy Cross. Given the perpetual drama surrounding Bullitt East, I could easily see Holy Cross in the Region 6 championship game against Mercy.

I don't have a daughter playing, but I stopped in at Ballard to catch the Softball Tournament final...
Championship Game (5 innings):
Ballard 11
Owensboro Catholic 1
Ballard team hit 3 deep bombs out of the park in the 4th inning and it felt like 35 degrees outside. Ballard lost to Owensboro Catholic 1-2 on Friday and came back on Saturday to win 3 games and take the title, and rode the back of an 8th grade pitcher that went the distance in all 3 Saturday games.

The Catholic ace pitcher was taken out after the 3 HR's...the best defensive player on the field was the #12 from Ballard that played 2nd base, I found out that she is freshman from that moved in from Southern California, was also the fastest kid on the field by far.

Ballard plays Male April 30 and Mercy May 1, thats going to be 2 great games on back to back nights. I will be at the Male game and hope to make the Mercy game. I believe the state champion will be Mercy or Ballard.

The Ballard starting line-up against Catholic was Sophomore's, Frosh and 8th grader's, one Senior I believe. The Ballard Tennessee commit was not at the Saturday games. The Ballard frosh #12 Cali kid on 2B and the S. Carolina #44 Catcher soph on Ballard are both very rare talent. If #12 gets on it is a triple, I saw her steal 2nd and 3rd at will like Ricky Henderson back in the day.
Ballard may very well be too young to win it in all 2013, but I think they will beat-down teams in 2014 and 2015 and run the table.
