The region was absolutely loaded then though, which I know you remember.
Clay was state runner-up in 1985 and Cumberland was just as good with Lewis Morris, Paul Gaffney, Richard Washington etc. Harlan had Jeff Miller and Rodrick Robinson and company, Middlesboro had Lawrence Buell and Knox Central was also very talented.
RunItUpTheGut Wrote:I'd love to see the 13th get back to that prestige it had from 85-95.
The biggest reason it has fallen off so much is the Keiths, and Hicks, are no longer around. There was great coaching quality during that time in the 13th. Even Whitley had Prewitt, arguably the best coach Whitleys ever had, and actually won a lot of games and had some of the better teams, but after he left to be principal, its been all down hill since.
That was a great time for basketball around here. That kind of basketball would embarrass the transfer teams of the 14th and 15th regions of today.
I remember Prewitt had a couple really good teams at Williamsburg. I don't remember him doing much a Whitley Co.

Current 15th Region schools with one apperance in the Sweet 16.
Sheldon Clark - 1983
Phelps - 1988
Prestonsburg - 1989
Allen Central - 1994
South Floyd - 2001
East Ridge - 2004

A fun question from this list would be which team do you think will come off the list next?,,my initial thought might be Lawrence County?

14th Region one apperance....
Leslie Co. - 1990

I believe in the 94 and 95 seasons, Whitley beat Corbin everytime in the regular season. It was also that last time Whitley beat Corbin in basketball, which is sad, however, in both those years, they were eliminated in the district by, you guess it, Corbin.
I want to say the 94-95 season, Whitley beat Corbin to death twice, if you remember, Whitley has Siler, Powers, etc, and Corbin was kinda down, but still had some players, i believe it was the year after Pietrowski left, and Whitley was favored to win district and compete for region, but lost to Corbin in district and went home without even going to region.
I agree with your statement though, he didnt do much, but considering 20 other coaches since him havent been able to beat Corbin, its gotta be worth something....
As for the best coach, you'd have to go all the way back to 1982 just to see a Whitley district title.

13th Region
Clay County 28 region titles, including 2013. I wonder how many schools can touch that? No matter the region.
Corbin 14
Harlan 6
South Laurel/Hazel Green 5 (In 12th Region for 40+ years though)
Bell County/Lone Jack 5
Knox Central 4
Williamsburg 3
Middlesboro 3
Rockcastle County 2/Brodhead 1
Annville (Jackson County) 1
Cumberland (Harlan County) 1
North Laurel 1
The only one left is waco, and im not sure what school that consolidated into. If im not mistaken, waco is around richmond or berea.
Im not counting pre-1930. Those schools havet been in the region since, and there was basically no 13th region during that time frame.

Prewitt took Williamsburg to the regional finals where they ran into Richie and the Tigers. Clay County beat Ballard in the finals that year. Shame they didn't have the All A that year.

I love Kentucky High School basketball!!!
Not just because of the teams/players.... But because Basketball means so much more to us than two teams playing against each other.

Maybe in 95 but I am sure Whitley Co never beat Corbin in 94. That's the year Corbin was ranked #1 in KY for much of the year. The 95 team was Deaton's first at Corbin. The 94 team was Hicks' last at Corbin.
As far as basketball coaches at Whitley Co, I think they are a sleeping giant. However, it seems to this outsider that throughout the years no matter who they hire for a head basketball coach about 1/2 the community is against him. They need to get behind whoever is coach. My favorite coach at Whitley County was the young guy back in the 80s who left Whitley County to coach a Jr. college. I don't recall his name.

If you are combining, Hazel Green would fit with North Laurel instead of South Laurel.

Waco would be Madison Central. The regional boundaries were different then.

I could have swore Feds Creek went to the big dance back when Jody Thompson was there. He would go on to play at Kentucky.

Nope Feds Creek lost in the region championship twice in school history in 1967 and 1990. They won the 60th District only once in school history in 1989. I could be off a year. No all As.

There's just something you can't express with words about being at Rupp Arena watching the kids you known since they were in the pee-wee leagues playing at Rupp in the Sweet 16.
I used to referee Buddy Ball, Jr. Pro, Elementary basketball games in Johnson County and when you see the same kids 7-8 years later being ahead 5 points against the #1 team in the state........
Willie Wonka said it best "No No, Don''t Speak. For some moments in life there are no words."
