Mark it a done deal.

I found out today too but didn't want to post anything about it out of respect for Mike and what he has done for Breathitt and the kids that played for him. Started getting the feeling that he was gone a couple weeks ago.
I hear LCC will be getting a new defensive coordinator as well.

Now the question is, who does Breathitt go after? Moore, Haddix?

About 99.999999999% sure it will be Kyle Moore. Already on staff and working at the school.

Yep, it most definitely is.

The way around big coaching salaries is to give the coach enough fake job titles and small salaries to add up to one big salary. However, I think the days of a coach sitting on his duff all day and not teaching at least a PE class is definitely coming to an end. Especially if the state is taking over and breathing down everybody's necks.
Another matter entirely is secret envelopes full of booster cash changing hands . That will continue.

True story.
A lot of football coaches are also athletic directors and conditioning or PE "teachers".
After you add all of it up, its a pretty big salary.
Theres also boosters and parents that like to write checks in some places.

I truthfully don't know of any coaches who don't teach a class these days. I know some who (I'm using examples of 6 period days, here):
-teach through lunch, then have a weightlifting class, followed by a Planning.
-teach until lunch, then lunch room duty, then another class, then planning.
-teach until lunch, then ISS (football and basketball coaches trade ISS)
-teach a couple classes in the morning, then Homebound the rest of the day
Those are just a few examples of ones I know for sure of that have a "padded" teaching schedule. What bothers me is that, if the District Homebound Instructor is a woman that doesn't teach, then nothing is said. If the AG teacher has lunchroom duty, w/ 6th period planning; nothing is said. Etc. Etc. Just another example of Double Standards. I tell you what else bothers me, and thats the fact that if someone gets out of the classroom to become an administrator, nothing is said. I got news for everybody, those teacher or teachers/coaches that get into administration w/ not many years of experience (<10 years), don't take admin gigs because "they love" being in the classroom. As a matter of fact, the coach who doesnt want to teach is no different than the teacher (with minimal years into it mind you) who gets into administration. Yes, the pay is more. I get that and fully understand it. But if you got them one on one and asked them if they truly loved being in the classroom fulltime, the answer would be a BIG no.
The schools that value academics and athletics, the ones who realize that you CAN be great at both and currently are, won't change their ways. Even board members, administrators and coaches of the "minor" sports realize what program(s) is the cash cow for all of the rest. They won't put that in jeapordy.

Ahem...don't look now, but the subject of this thread had that sweet deal for a good many years...
03-01-2013, 10:14 PM
He did teach PE (weightlifting), and was also the full time AD for a good many years as well, correct?
03-01-2013, 10:32 PM
If the parents will give him time. He will turn it around, but they are a couple years away and that scares me.
03-02-2013, 01:12 AM
I know that I think Coach Haywood used to coach but now he is a full-time counselor at school including dealing with schedule changes and stuff such as that.

Expectations at LCC are at an alltime low. The best time to take the job. Coach Holcomb is a legend and will be treated as such. All programs have naysayers, but many are waiting for someone who cares about the kids and not themselves. Good luck Coach!
03-02-2013, 09:56 AM
Be real here. He is there because of the state taking over at Breathitt and MONEY. Will he move there.....nope. Pumping up retirement. Be there 2-4 years and done. Will he be successfull yes because he is a great coach. I think it is a great hire to get the program back on its feet. But if it is for the program, he will move and fully committ to the community. Either way , he is a great coach, and the best hire they could have made.
03-02-2013, 10:26 AM
Mike will turn LCC around. He was looking at a move before State took over. I think once that happened he really wanted out. Not a bad Move. Good Luck to him and LCC.

Doesn't know how to coach mountain kids? He's been coaching them
for over 30 years, won 3 state title and a runner up with mountain kids.
It would take a pretty dim bulb to trot that one out.

The state taking over doesn't have anything to do with it (it might, but I don't know too many teachers who have at least 27 years in who are worried about the state or any authority, b/c they are no longer teaching bc they have to). He's been able to retire now for 3-4 years. This year is his 30th year. He could have just retired altogether, and still be well off.
Instead, by going to LCC, he is going to draw his full retirement benefits from KTRS (pay, insurance, etc.) + he will be able to make X amount of money at LCC towards his retirement "threshold" (as the KDE calls it).
In short, does this have to do with money? Probably so. I don't understand why people have a problem with that (not insinuating that you do). It's like those who aren't education expect teachers and coaches to live by standards (rules, whichever) that they don't live by themselves. In any profession, one of the reasons people take other jobs is due to the opportunity to financially BETTER themselves.

^^^Coach can't draw full retirement until December. Have to be 55 and he isn't quiet there yet. And to think the state didn't have anything to do with it would be naive because it did.

No, you don't have to be 55 to draw retirement. To max it out and get the most that you can possibly get, yes, people go until 55.
Mike could have retired from teaching after his 27th year had he wanted; many do just that. MANY.
Trust me. It had more to do with financially than the state taking over. (while it was cheaper for LCC, it sets him up perfectly)

Don't know that it dos or doesn't, but it's not hard to imagine that
the state takeover DOES pay a big role. Big time h.s. coaches
with the resume and longevity of Holcomb tend to become
icon's who aren't held to the same rules, and have tons of influence
over hwo their players are treated.
Don't know, or really care for that matter, but it's easy to see
that the state takeover COULD change the dynamic and make
a coach want to seek other opportunities.

There's nothing wrong, legally or ethically for boosters to
augment a coach's pay if that's what they want to do.
Of course if they hide it and the income doesn't get reported
that's another situation.

You're right that they aren't held to the same rules, their rules are tighter clamped IMO. Coaches, in particular, football and basketball coaches in communities are more noticeable than most, if not all of the administrators. It doesn't mean it's right, but it's true.
The rules are tighter on these coaches, IMO. For example, take Joe Bob Billy the science teacher and John Doe the teacher/head football coach. If both of them were to get DUI's, who is the biggest news story? Who is on the front page of the paper and who has a little insert on pg A-12?
Heck, take somebody at Central Office, the Transportation or a Curriculum Coordinator. Let them get a DUI as well as the Head Football Coach, and watch which is more scrutinized (b/c more people give a dang about one than the other, it's just fact).
So, pardon me if I've never bought the 'coaches get to do whatever they want to do' line. Coaches, teachers, Admin, doctors, nurses, lawyers, para-legals are all held to the same rules, some are just better at not getting caught (if doing anything not in compliance with company policy).
