What's wrong with Shelby Valley?
#1
Shelby Valley's record since winning the state championship in 2010 is 41-43. How does a program with such success and tradition drop off so quickly? The talent isn't on the same level as that championship team, but it should be way better than 41-43. These kids were successful at the middle school level, so why hasn't that translated to high school??? There seems to be little to no improvement in the players over the past few years and can usually be attributed to coaching...

If you think success in middle school equates to success in high school therein lies the problem.

I am not connected to the inner workings of the team. I will not pretend to know if there are issues with the coaches or not.

But I do know that there is enough talent on that team to be doing better than they currently are. Sitting there with a 13-13 record overall, going 7-7 against other teams in a weak 15th region, just isn't going to cut it.

Just over the last 2 weeks, Valley has gotten blown out by 32 to Hazard, by 16 to Lawrence, and by 15 to Betsy Layne. All of these results are simply unacceptable.

I will say that Valley is still a relatively young team. Belter is a junior, and most of the rest of the major players are sophomores and freshmen. But these guys do not seem to have improved much in a year's time. It was disappointing, but not totally unexpected, when they missed the regional tournament last year for the first time since 1999. But their youth gave reason to hope for improvement this year, and that has not really happened.

In short, I don't know what's wrong, but something is definitely not right. I would not be a bit surprised to see some shake-ups after the season, if Valley falls flat against East Ridge next week and misses the regionals again.

I will tell what Valley needs to do first. Give RANDY DAVIS the high school job there. He is a helluva coach. He does more with his grade school team than most high schools do. Give him the job, if he acts like he dont want it. Make him do it. You guys have a homegrown guy that absolutely loves helping kids and he flat out knows the game.

I'm not saying they need to make a coaching change or not. But if they DO make a change, hiring Randy Davis would be an excellent choice. He is a great coach and would do a great job.

I agree with this. He does a great job and really knows basketball. The players really develop under him.

I'm sadden by what has gone on at Valley for three years. These kids deserve better leaders than they have.
#8
They're just not very good, lol. But I trust Valley to beat ER MUCH more than I do ER to beat Valley in the 1st round, especially after watching them destroy ER last month.

I agree with earlier comment, what they did in grade school and grade dies not make for a great high school team. Kids change in many ways, some lose some interest, some already have had there maturity growth, some kids grow physically and mentally later. These are good kids trying to do their best with what they have. I really can not understand why so many thought this group was going to be like the state championship team. That kind of group rarely comes around. A very special gift that the kids continued to develop each and every day.....
#10
I think Valley is a lot like Betsy Layne. They have really good middle school teams because they hold these kids back a grade or two and they dominate in grade school and when they get in high school they just fizzle out because they arent biugger and stronger than the rest of the kids. I know everybody is going to get excited and start yelling at me for my comment but thats just my opinion.
#11
Pretty close to what I was saying. I have seen it happen so many times...

SV will beat ER Tuesday night. Could easily beat Pikeville on Thursday for district championship.

He would not have a chance. COWARD COWARD COWARD. High School boys would walk on him. HOLD BACK - HOLD BACK- HOLD BACK

Ky headhunter you need to get the facts straight about holdbacks before you post about Valley and Dorton. The one thing that you posted was right. You posted I think

On Coach Davis? Not happening. Too many of the players from both Virgie and Dorton respect him and what he has achieved with past teams. I strongly feel that the players at Valley get along fine with each other. They all share a common work ethic and all want to win no matter the cost. IMO, they are still kids, and basketball or sports in general at the High School level should be fun. You can tell by watching Valley play that they are not having fun. Some look like they are making poor decisions because they are afraid to make mistakes.
They looked as if they were having much more fun Friday against Belfry. They played comfortable and relaxed. Again it’s just my opinion, but if they are playing in fear and not having fun, something needs to change.

Coach Davis would be perfect for the job. They are still kids even when they are in high school.

just for fun Wrote:Ky headhunter you need to get the facts straight about holdbacks before you post about Valley and Dorton. The one thing that you posted was right. You posted I think
My facts are straight. My son has played ball against those kids since they were in 3rd grade. He is now a senior and what are they? Btw, my son has a September birthday and he started kindergarden and turned 6 a month into school which makes him an older senior at this point. Your own parents at Valley talk about how old these kids are and I have had several parents tell me one kid in particular has been held back twice and possibly a third year. I dont care what they do at Valley it doesnt concern me but all I was doing was replying to a thread asking whats wrong with Valley and thats what I think is wrong.
#19
Headhunter, you're right on target here. Anybody that disagree's is only disagreeing because you are telling the truth. I have been told by some of the Shelby Valley parents, more than one by the way that this very thing goes on. They had a dominating middle school team two years ago. Some of those 8th graders were driving to school the following year!!! As I recall, I graduated from high school at the age of 17! Big difference huh? As you say, they struggle now because they are now playing kids their own age and cannot physically push them around. But it goes on everywhere, not just there, just the way it is now I guess.

Coach Randy Davis is a great coach and a even better person. He would do a wonderful job wherever he was given the oppurtnity.

To say the only reason BL and Virgie have had sucessful MS programs is because they were older than everyone else is just wrong. But eveyone is entitled to an opinion. It would be more truthful to say that Virgie and BL have been sucessful because their holdbacks were better than the other schools. Just to name a few BL, Virgie, Dorton, EC, Belfry, Wesley, Adams, SF, Mullins, Pikeville, Allen Central, Allen, Milliard, and Johns Cr. Not throwing off on any of these schools at all. As you can see there are not many schools that have not had kids retained and thats just in 2 counties.

Coach Howard you are right. All these schools hold kids back and none of the schools you mentioned are worth a sh!t so whats your point???????????
#22
My point was made. All teams have had kids that have or had been retained.
If you want to look outside of Pike and Floyd counties. How bout JC are they any good? How bout Hazard? Or how bout Knott Co?

Are you just mad your little Johnny didn't get to play, because you didn't
hold him back.

It's the norm now
#24
Coach Howard im not on here to argue with you but you mentioned Johnson Cen and their main man is Shane Hall and no he is not a hold back and you mentioned Knott Co. Who is their holdback? All I did was answer the question ask in the post and you are the main man that wants to argue. You are the man with the 15 yre old 7th grader that just bullies everybody around and pushes and shoves kids and let me go ahead and say now. That kid will fizzle in high school as well.
#25
If you think holding kids back is just a local and not a national thing then you do not get out much.Read the book, "Play their hearts out".
#26
Actually guys look at the past couple years of the national top players. They are reclassifying and graduating early. This is not the norm for top notch talent. This is the norm for parents with kids that are OK ball players just trying to make them look great. Go back yrs ago and you will see Rex Chapman played at KY at age 16 and this yr Nerlens Noel reclassifies and comes out a yr early to enter college and then you have Ky's top recruit for 2014 in Karl Townes he is coming out early and Wiggins reclassifies and coming out early. So if your trying to make a point that all the top talent do it then you need to read some kind of book and not me. In closing I will say good luck to Shelby Valley and the rest of the 15th region in the post season and since everybody has all these hold backs whoever comes out of the 15th shouldnt have any problem handling Trinity or Ballard in the state tournament.

Not sure what I said that was leading to an argrument?

And for the 15yr old 7th grader, he just so happens to be my nephew that is 13yrs old and will not be 14 until March!!! So I will take that as a compliment.
