Just a great basketball game. It looked like NCC was going to win by 10-15 with about 6 minutes remaining and Bolden just took over the last 6 min. IMO Siebert was just as unstoppable throughout the game. It was clear that NCC was not going to let the Bulldogs beat them from the 3 and they were like glue. Holmes did not take advantage of backdoors. NCC's size was a huge factor plus the Breds taking care of the ball. Coston in foul trouble most of the game hurt. McDonald was also and that did not help them. Englemon also had foul trouble and Schulte killed them when he was out. The Breds killed the 'dogs on the boards denying 2nd shots and getting 2-3 many times. The 1st three quarters, NCC was the much better team. The last 5 minutes Holmes got hot, mostly Bolden, it was one of those flurries you just know will some time. Both teams had a shot to win in regulation. Both teams missed the front end of a one on one in the last 45 seconds with Holmes down by one. Then with 14 seconds Bolden hits an unbelievable 3 with guys hanging all over him. Pangallo drives the length and makes a 10 footer with 2 seconds left. Both were money. In the first OT Holmes lead most of the way and lead by three with about 25 seconds on a Chames dunk. Beuter drives the basket and makes the bucket + 1. That was Englemon's last foul. Palmer went down and missed a contested layup as time expired. In the 2nd OT NCC went at Holmes inside with Englemon out and stretched the lead to 8 and made FT's, mostly Beuter, to seal it. Really it was a great effort by both teams. Hopefully we'll see these two again. It will be worth the $$. The officiating was not a factor. There are always calls you disagree with depending on who you like. The intentional foul on Chames was the right call, he pulled Siebert's arms down. Tough break but easy call. The dogs fought through it though and had their chances.

We have seen losses work for the good... Never like to lose though

These are two very good teams. It's a shame only one of them will be able to represent the 9th region at the state tournament. NewCath would probably be the best rep for the 9th in that they have the size to compete at Rupp. The teams with big frontcourts tend to do well at state if they don't get upended in the first round. I've noticed that trend over the years. The smaller, quicker teams play solid in the first round or two, but they lose a little spring in their hops as the touranament wears on.
Paintsville in 1998 is a good example. They were fortunate to win close games in the first two rounds but cruised in the final two games. They had the big frontcourt of Van Hoose, Ratliff, and McKinley.

What an exciting contest. Best high school game I've witnessed in a while. What will be interesting is how these two teams adapt/change when they meet again in the 9th Region Tournament at NKU in a couple weeks. Cooper and CovCath certainly have a shot, too, of playing in Lexington, but NewCath obviously now is the favorite to advance to the Sweet 16. I was very impressed with NewCath's game last night. They're solid at every position. If I were a NewCath fan, though, my biggest concern would be whether they shoot as well at NKU as they did in the Holmes gym. I watched a strange regional game at NKU a few years back in which Boone and NewCath COMBINED only hit a half-dozen or so field goals in the second half. Strange things sometimes happen at strange gyms.

The Bolden kid from Holmes must be a special player.

Newport C. Cath is a great team. Big and play together well. They flat out get after you. To beat a team like Holmes even though Newport Cath is rated higher just shows they are worth of the ranking. That region Will be interesting between those two and don't count out Newport either.

Per a couple people in the "know," better than Dickie Beal. If you are a UK fan, Beal was the starting PG for the '84 Final 4 team.

That and how the refs from the different regions call the game. Two big things to adjust to.
