All District, All Region Question
#1
Do any districts or regions choose their all tournament teams by any method other than the quota system?

I'm NOT a coach and I've been a part of several All-District Tournament and All-Region Tournament committees.

Truth be told, many stick to the quota (4 for champ, 3 for runner-up, 2 for each team which loses in the semifinals ... 1 for a team which loses in first round of district or region).

However, I've seen one (Marion County when it hosted 5th Region Softball) that had like a 5-person committee (AD who was out every game, PA announcer, book keeper, radio/newspaper) which picked the 15 BEST.

Each player would get nominated and a list was kept on a wall markerboard. If a player played really good in the quarters, but struggled in the semis and finals, she didn't make it.

I've also seen some coaches who put ONLY seniors on the team. Didn't matter if an underclassman struck out 10 in softball, scored four goals in soccer, had 15 kills in volleyball or averaged a double-double in basketball.

Some tournaments also give out an MVP (usually get a sponsor since the KHSAA does NOT provide for MVPs for district and region).

Bottom line: There is no right-wrong way.

My reason for asking is that I believe that the results under the quota system are meaningless. For example, in a four team district, eleven of the twenty "starters" make the all tournament team. That is both ridiculous and meaningless. There are teams that have no one who could even make the team at any of the other three schools in their district. Nonetheless, two of that team's players will make the all district team.

The idea of inclusiveness has resulted in making many of the selections laughable. A legitimate all district team should have no more than five or six members while an all region team should be limited to ten or less. These teams, I believe, should be chosen by an independent and confidential panel.
