Bellevue has promoted defensive coordinator Johnny Poynter to the position of head football coach, according to principal Dave Eckstein. Poynter replaces Mike Croley.
“We’re excited,” said Eckstein, a former football coach at Bellevue.
Poynter, formerly head coach at Pike County Central, Trimble County and Bourbon County, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He’s been involved with coaching since 1992.
Bellevue finished 7-5 each of the past two seasons under Croley.
From Bellevue:
Bellevue High School is pleased to announce that Johnny Poynter has been hired as our head football coach. Coach Poynter came to Bellevue this season as a health and PE teacher and defensive coordinator for the football team. He led an outstanding defense that held 9 of 12 opponents under their scoring average.
Coach Poynter began his coaching career in 1992 as an assistant to Tom Larkey at Rockcastle County. In 1997 coach Poynter went to Bourbon County as the defensive coordinator under the legendary Dudley Hilton. Together, they guided the team to a state championship.
Coach Poynter began his head coaching career at Pike County Central in 2002 where in his first year he broke the school record for wins in a season. In 2005, he moved to Trimble County where he inherited a team with a 27 game losing streak. In his second game they broke that streak and he went on to lead the team to back to back winning seasons and the first playoff win in school history. In 2009 coach Poynter returned to Bourbon County to take over a team that had won only 5 games in the previous 5 seasons. His team gained 5 wins in his first season and in 2011 they had their first winning season in 12 years and first playoff win in 15 years.
