30 going on 40 Wrote:I have watched NewCath for over 20 years. I have seen 3 of their state championship teams and 4 of their state runner ups. You get a sense of how good a team is. This team has all of the pieces that you need in a championship team. I don't care who they lost to in the beginning of the year. All that did was build depth as injured starters sat. They may get crushed on Friday, but that doesn't change my opinion that this team has what it takes. They have a stud RB who would have started for any team in NKY, a good QB, a very explosive WR with a solid, not great, but very solid OLine. They have an athletic D-Line. Is this team as dominate as the team that won two years ago? No. That team was stupid talented. This team isn't good enough to overcome a 2 turnover plus deficit. They are, however, as good as the teams that I watched get to state title games. That's what I'm judging this off of. I trust my eyes much more than I trust a mathematical formula.

Hayes would start for lots of teams in N. ky. He wouldn't start at Rb for Highlands. Absolutely no way. He'd be on dline or lb.

I don't know. I think that he and Harris are neck and neck. Both would start at NewCath as they go 2 back w/ Harris running like Chris Kelly and Hayes taking the Jake Cain role.

My prediction is that anyone counting either of these teams out of this game is wrong. This should be a heck of a football game. Not sure how anyone could be sure one of these teams doesn't have a chance. I predict a slobber knocker of a football game.

I'm pulling for Somerset, however there's just something about NCC. Not even the best Briar Jumper team (in my opinion) back in 84, with Massey, and Fletcher could beat them.
#95
In fairness, that '84 NewCath team was stacked pretty good. Three good backs for the wishbone option and Frank Jacobs on the outside.

That was almost 30 years ago! :biglmao:

Does Somerset have a grass field? What are the expected weather condition's?

Sadly yes almost 30 years. Hard to believe. Those early to mid 80's Jumper teams were fun to watch. Fletcher is still one of the best HS backs I have ever seen. Yes Somerset's field is grass. It's a great field.

I forgot that Jeff Brady played on that NewCath team. He played MLB in the NFL for 8 seasons. Fletcher wasn't getting tackled by nobodies. Brady and Kramer were about as good as it got at linebacker.

Somerset's defense will be the difference once again. I like the Jumpers to win this game by a score of 21-7. I hope Somerset can go to Bowling Green and bring home thier first championship. Good Luck Jumpers.

I would be very surprised if NewCath only scored 7 points.
28 points either way probably wins the ball game. Both are capable of beating the other, it will come down to execution and playing sound football

Ive only heard stories about James Fletcher and he must have been something else. Has the rushing record and most touchdowns ever at Somerset and only played 2 seasons with them.

And even NewCath's noseguard in '84 (Frank Jacobs) was a subsequent KY Mr. Football and Notre Dame signee.

Even when the Jumpers and Breds met the year before in '83, NewCath's noseguard (Mike Kelly) was the best in the state and their running back (Tim Jurgens) was a beast.

The Jumpers won that year in Newport, though. Things happen.
Does anybody know how many state titles NewCath has? I could look it up, but I'm sure someone on here knows.
Frank Jacobs was Mr. Football wasn't he? Tight end position.
I will be pulling for Somerset in this one.

Don't quote me on it but I thought they had three titles in seven finals appearances.

4 w/ 2 one pt. losses and a 3 pt. loss in the finals.

As a matter of fact he was the very first Mister Football in 1986. He caught a touchdown pass in the bowl game vs. West Virginia that gave the Irish their last National Championship.

Frank is a great guy. Super good individual. Played some baseball with him. You'll never hear anyone say a negative thing about Frank.

On Somerset vs NCC this year. There's 24 teams still alive. These 2 teams are definitely in the weakest 4-6 teams still playing. Real surprised that there's this much chatter about a couple teams with 8 losses or so still playing.
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Ers!!!

Do you know what they call the weakest team that wins next week in Bowling Green? State Champions.
