Bears capitalize on mistakes to rout Pulaski in Region 4 finals
By JOHN HENSON

Brad Paisley warns visitors to Coal Miners Memorial Stadium that they'll never Harlan alive.
Pulaski County quarterback Riley Hall now understands what that means after spending most of the evening running for his life in the Region 4 championship game Friday.
Harlan County turned three of Hall's four interceptions into touchdowns as the Bears rolled into the 5A state semifinals with a surprisingly easy 46-12 rout.
Defensive ends Aaron Caldwell and Cole Wilson harassed Hall from the start, making the talented Pulaski quarterback look like the freshmen he is, perhaps for the first time in the 9-4 season that he orchestrated after the Maroons slumped to 3-8 a year ago.
"They were trying to go to (running back Tyler) Goins on about every play. Their little quarterback does a fine job, but he couldn't take the pressure that was coming from the outside tonight," said Harlan County coach Tom Larkey, who admitted the game wasn't what he expected.
"I thought it would be a tough game, and it was a tough game in spurts, but we made some big plays, some interceptions and sacks and big offensive plays," he said. "I thought we might be able to win the game, but I didn't think it would be in this fashion."
Pulaski County turned the ball over six times, an almost certain way to watch your season come to an end.
"We made some mistakes early and obviously you can't turn the ball over in a game of this magnitude and set them up with a short field," Pulaski County coach Johnny Hines said. "That was probably as bad a start as we could have gotten off to.
"We had some breakdowns in pass protection. We didn't play very well. I hate that. They are a good football team, but the game tonight is not indicative of how good our team is."
Harlan County followed a winning formula in capturing its second regional title in three years with a dominating run defense that gave up only 34 yards on the ground while controlling the ball on offense with 360 yards rushing on 58 carries.
Junior fullback Carson Whitehead was all but unstoppable up the middle as he ran for a career-high 141 yards on 17 carries. Senior tailback Jake Middleton, who topped the 2,000-mark for the season, finished with 94 yards on 13 carries.
The Harlan County defensive ends teamed on the first touchdown as Caldwell applied the pressure and WIlson grabbed an interception and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. WIlson's extra point gave the Bears a 7-0 lead with 8:21 to play in the first quarter.
WIlson supplied the pressure on Pulaski's second possession and senior Tucker Lewis was there for the interception at the line of scrimmage. Whitehead rumbled 32 yards up the middle for a touchdown two plays later. Wilson's extra point made the score 14-0 with 7:05 left in the opening period.
A sack by Caldwell for a 12-yard loss effectively ended the third Pulaski drive, setting up a five-play, 42-yard drive. Whitehead went 22 yards on the first play and Chitwood went 11 on the fourth, setting up a 4-yard touchdown run by Chitwood on the next play as the HCHS lead grew to 20-0 with 2:55 left in the first quarter.
Tyler Goins went 80 yards on the ensuing kickoff before he was caught from behind by Wilson on the Harlan County 1. Aaron Smith, lined up at quarterback in the Wildcat formation, bounced off a crowd at the of scrimmage and went to his left for the touchdown on the next play.
Harlan County went back to power football to answer, going 62 yards in nine plays. Treyvon Long's 50-yard run on a third-and-20 play kept the drive alive and set up Whitehead's 4-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Justin Napier added the two-point conversion for a 28-6 lead.
Hall finally made the Harlan County defense pay for its pressure when he found Alec Wooldridge on a slant pass on a third-and-26 play that turned into a 54-yard touchdown pass when the senior receiver beat man-to-man coverage.
Harlan County reclaimed the momentum before the break with a seven-play drive capped by Middleton's 28-yard touchdown run with 23.9 seconds left in the half.
Treyvon Long pushed the lead to 40-12 early in the third quarter when he returned Hall's third interception 60 yards for a touchdown. Caldwell pressured Hall on the plan, then buried the last potential Pulaski defender on the return as Long went in for the score.
The Bears went to ball control football with the comfortable lead, marching 80 yards in 12 plays to scale the scoring on quarterback Scottie Bailey's 1-yard TD run with 7:20 to play. Whitehead and Middleton took turns ripping off big gains up the middle as Harlan County picked up five first downs.
Zach Chitwood, Nick Cornett and Devin Curry each picked up first downs as the Bears ran the final six minutes off the clock, driving to the Pulaski 10 before freshman quarterback Jarret Ford took a knee on the final play as time expired.
The victory was the eighth straight for the Bears, who many questioned after a loss to Knox Central dropped them to 3-2 midway through the regular season.
"We have improved, but experience does make you improve," Larkey said. "I think one reason we do get better is we are on to the kids every day about the little things in practice. We're not perfect yet, so we still have to get better."
Harlan County will play host to Cooper, a winner over Franklin County last night in the Region 3 finals, on Friday at 7:30. The winner will travel to Bowling Green for the 5A state championship game the following week.

Congrats to the black bears and what an impressive "D" you had tonight....Congrats Pulaski on a good season...
11-17-2012, 12:34 AM
Impressed! I didn't expect this! Pulaski scored on a missed coverage/assignment and a 1 yard TD after a long kickoff return. The Filthy Animal defense came to play so proud of them! I knew comparing shutting down Whitley to playing the Black Bears was a mistake! Wow, really liked the teams meeting at the middle of the field after the game! That is class by both programs!
11-17-2012, 12:38 AM
Can you say blowout!!! I got this one right but not the score. I think the Bears have peaked at just the right time but I don't know if it is good enough to win it all.
11-17-2012, 12:47 AM
The Black Bears put on a show for the home side tonight. It's been a very exciting season. They are really playing as a team. Pulaski's youth showed tonight, but they are going to be something to watch out for in the future. They've had a great season.
Keep rolling bears!
Keep rolling bears!

Seen this one coming.
Harlan County was much better than predicted this year.
Made the rest of the region look like clowns.
Take care of business next week HC.
You'll have a fan in Whitley County over the next two weeks.

Great win tonight.....we totally won the line of scrimmage and that's what you have to do in big games.
That being said.....Pulaski played us with 7 in the box all night against our 3 back sets. If the rest of the teams from here on out are that foolish, we may be bringing the hardware home this year.

Nope. Honest answer.
I honestly didnt think HC would have been as good as they currently are, especially after there first couple of games to open the season.
This team has improved a lot this year.

Pulaski loaded up the box against Whitley as well.
Only difference is, Harlan County had theO Line to block them, Whitley didnt.
After watching the dismantling of WC's line by HC, I knew this would be another easy task for HC.
Next week, im interested in seeing how HC matches up against Cooper.
Im sure we'll hear plenty of NKY talk, but im wondering how the two match up and how balanced Cooper is.

Yeah, they have improved.
They were the favorite though. I tried to tell you last spring when you said they couldn't be as good with the graduation losses.

Harlan Co is just plain scary on defense. Cooper better bring there game. Defense wins championships!

This one went about like I thought it would. Congrats to the Black Bears. Very nice season for a young Pulaski team, nothing to hang your heads about.

Congrats to the Black Bears and that Filthy Animal D. Coordinator doing a heck of a job. Is it Canady, who used to be the Head Coach at Evarts?
